I've seen several posts on this site of people pondering the meaning behind the Headlong lyrics. Many think there is none, I used to. But I think I figured it out...it's about having sex... "Hey he used to be a man with a stick in his hand Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do She used to be a woman with a hot dog stand Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do" A lonely guy...who had to masturbate...and a slut... Now you've got soup in the laundry bag (ejaculating, perhaps?) Now you've got strings you're gonna lose your rag (attached to someone...and not needing a jizz rag, perhaps) You're gettin' in a fight Then it ain't so groovy when you're screaming in the night Let me out of this cheap B movie(regretting doing it?) Headlong down the highway and you're rushing Headlong out of control (self-explanatory) And you think you're so strong But there ain't no stopping and you can't stop rockin' (self-explanatory) And there's nothin you can nothin' you can nothin' you can do about it When a red hot man meets a white hot lady Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do (Whoa, definitely self-explanatory) Soon the fire starts raging gets you more than half crazy (Again, definitely self-explanatory) Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do Now they start freaking everywhere you turn (Constant boning) You can't start walking cause your feet got burned It ain't no time to figure wrong from right Cause reason's out of the window better hold on tight (horniness getting the better of you) You're rushing headlong Headlong out of control - yeah And you think you're so strong But there ain't no stopping And there's nothin you nothin' you nothin' you can do about it at all Yeah yeah Alright - go And you're rushing headlong down the highway And you're rushing headlong out of control And you think you're so strong But there ain't no stopping There's nothin nothin' nothin' you can do about it Ah ha Headlong Yeah yeah yeah Headlong Headlong Headlong gnoldeaH gnoldeaH gnoldeaH gnoldeaH I never noticed ANY of this before. |

That's an... interpretation. |

With the right amount of therapy, you can probably go back to never noticing these things again. |

Yeah. I'm not going to be able to listen to Headlong without thinking of this thread. |

*rolling his eyes* oh, come on -- that's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard in my life. *sticking his hands in his pockets, walks off, singing "Anti-Russian hedgehog..."* |

I thought it was about getting sucked into things that bring up a whole load of trouble you can't do anything about, i.e. Brian falling in love with Anita etc... I presumed the man with the stick in his hand was guitarist Brian. Whether Anita used to sell hot dogs for a living I have no idea. Sorry. |
Spiderleg Synthia 04.09.2004 06:40 |
I did think "a stick" was "his dick" when I first heard the song, but I checked up on the lyrics and found out the truth. |

I've never thought of it that way before.... I mean, it's one thing to lose 24 hours of sleep to find the meaning of The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, but wow. It could have a different meaning for Freddie than Brian. With Brian, it could have been about his marriage falling out and Anita. With Freddie, maybe he wanted to sing it because it reminded him of his situation at the time and how all that partying caught up with him. |

I'm sorry to say, I also thought of this briefly when I listened to the song. Although, I normally have my head in the gutter and think of all the subliminal messages that COULD be in the song. |

Maybe i'll add that to my sex having cd! |

I always thought that the man with the stick was Freddie. |

"Hey he used to be a man with a stick in his hand Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do She used to be a woman with a hot dog stand Hoop diddy diddy - hoop diddy do" Actaually.... the man with the stick in the hand is refering to a police officer, I believe...and well...the woman with a hotdog stand..I think is pretty straightforward.... a woman with a hot dog stand.....those are just my thoughts... |

"gnoldeaH gnoldeaH gnoldeaH gnoldeaH" I always thought that they were saying "horney, horney, horney, horney"! lol oh well, maybe my mind was in the gutter as well. KYA everyone |

It's obviously what the song is about, no doubt. Even if the other lyrics are objective, these seal the deal. When a red hot man meets a white hot lady Woop diddy diddy - woop diddy do Soon the fire starts raging gets you more than half crazy Woop diddy diddy - Woop diddy do Now they start freaking everywhere you turn You can't start walking cause your feet got burned It ain't no time to figure wrong from right Cause reason's out of the window better hold on tight |

I thought Brian wrote the song about the crashing relationship with his wife and his growing affair with Anita Dobson, and some observations about the state of the band at the time -- things were going in one crazy direction really fast i.e. wanting to tour but being unable because of Fred's health-- 'cos there ain't no stoppin' and ya can't stop rockin' no there's nothing you can nothing you nothing you can do about it...' "Headlong" makes my head spin. The entire Innunedo album seems more introspective than any other, IMHO, at least the kind of personal comments which seem more transparent than Freddie wrestling with his sexual identity in "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Somebody to Love." When Freddie sings "inside my heart is breaking, my makeup may be flaking," you really could take it literally if you consider the effects of the virus. Brian writes great lyrics, really thoughtful sentiments on "The Show Must Go On" that remind me of "Long Away" or "Sail Away Sweet Sister." |

I agree Mex!! The song isn't about sex, it's about AIDS |
QueenZeppelin 07.09.2004 16:50 |
Perhaps Headlong was about all of those three hings (sex, AIDS, Brian's personal life) It seems to me that there are many Queen songs which have duel meanings to them, not just one true interpretation or "one vision" (har). |
