What do you think of Evanescence? I've heard 'My Immortal', and a song or two from their first cd, Origin, which are pretty interesting. Amy Lee sounds incredible in the very beginning of 'Lies'...but again, I lack any real knowledge on the group - is it worth paying any attention to? |
FriedChicken 02.09.2004 13:46 |
Oh god, they're so talentless and unoriginal. |

I mean: obviously Amy Lee has a good voice and the songs are undoubtly easy-listening but, as Fried Chicken pointed out, there is no originality at all in what they play!!! I know one hundred bands I've been listening to (and sometimes supported on tour with my band) which played the same things as Evanescence at least ten years before them!!! And, from their songs, you could argue an amount of talent and freshness Evanescence don't have and never will... If you love that kind of music, and you DO like to listen to something absolutely fantastic, pick up "Nighttime Birds" by "The Gathering"... They are a Dutch band (and Fried Chicken will be even happier - btw, do you know them?) which has always been ignored by the mainstream... Try to listen something by them, and then tell me what you think... Believe me, they'll give you shivers... :-) Albyboy |

Evanescence is a new band, and is for sure better than the average rock band that we listen on the radio, although mainly because the quality of music these days is very poor, so is no wonder why Evanescence stands out above the rest. One thing for sure is that Evanescence is a band that needs to mature, but you can't blame them for that because they have only released one album. I give them the props for writing their own material and working so hard to make it big. I've listened to some of their material that wasn't included on their 'Fallen' album, and some of it is even better than the stuff on the album itself. Only time will tell whether Evanescence will rise or sink, but they sure are a promising act. I'll have to agree on the fact that bands like Muse and Franz Ferdinand deserve as much or perhaps even more recognition than Evanescence. But then again people shouldn't complain about Evanescence when we have silly pop acts like Jessica and sis Ashley Simpson, as well as awful rappers like 50 Cent taking over the whole mainstream and getting a lot more airplay and publicity than rock bands that truly have talent. One thing I can tell you for sure is that Evanescence is far more original than The Darkness. |

It'll be the 3th time I see them :)I agree with you willem-jan, Nighttime Birds is not my favourite album too but, you know, I thought it would have been the most suitable choice to approach to their music... It's much easier to listen to and there are quite a lot of melodic passages... Don't you agree? I like Mandylion and Souvenirs a lot... Especially the first one. I'm happy anyway that there is somebody who knows them and likes their way of makin' music... What about the other part of my reply? Since you know the Gathering, do you agree with me that 10 years ago there already were many bands playing the same things as Evanescence in a far better way? I'm kinda close-minded about most music. My two favorites are obviously Queen and the Beatles. I rarely listen to anything else. I probably should listen to some other stuff. One of my friends got me a Pink Floyd CD for my birthday last year, and I haven't listened to it yet. I'll put it on my iPod, and I'll get around to it... eventually. |
SergeantPepperDG 04.09.2004 17:02 |
I really like Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, and (a little) Jefferson Airplane (pretty much just White Rabbit and Somebody to Love). |

Dream Theater. They have almost completely changed the way I view music, and have inspired me to be a far better musician than I ever thought I could be. But I'm also into Rush, Max Webster, Beatles, Van Halen, Zeppelin, and some Mozart and Bach when I'm the mood. |

However, Evanescense can not directly be compared to The Gathering. The Gathering started a new "genre", which lead to bands as Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation etc. Evanescense combine some elements of bands like this, with nu-metal kind of music. So, to make it in the US, it needs to sound like everything else that's popular, with a minor modification. That's the way to make it on MTV (=US). The Gathering is way more original then Evanescense. The latter is just a temporarely pop-rockband. The Gathering has been around since the early 90's. |

From your list the best is Nirvana. People think that it's overrated. No, it isn't. It's really good. You may also listen to Robbie Williams. I personaly like The Strokes a lot. But I'm not sure if anyone here know this band. Dunno, for me it's great. :) You choose. |
Mr.Jingles 06.09.2004 09:31 |
Nirvana might be called "overated", and perhaps they are a little. But Nirvana is not nearly as "overated" as The Strokes. I don't think 'The Strokes' are bad, but from the reviews you get from critics is almost like they're the best thing since 'The Beatles', and that makes them look more little than they are. |
