Any fool can see that John was a very good song writter. But of all the songs he contributed to Queen, which do you think deserves more praise? I'd say it;s a tie between Misfire or Who Needs You. |
VGB 30.08.2004 20:18 |
people are gonna get anrgy about this "newbie" post... that aside hard to choose, you know you can fit every song he wrote /co-wrote on 1 CD? I made myself a Deaky mix once... I'll say If You Can't Beat Them or You And I |
iGSM 30.08.2004 20:28 |
Yes, quite possible that. I'm certain you could probably get it on a mini-disc. I'd say You and I/Who Needs You. And I Want to to Break Free. Fuck all people know that Deaky wrote it...you know with the Freddie and the gay song and the 'I've already told you that' quote from Freddie etc. etc. |
Zander05 30.08.2004 20:29 |
I Want To Break Free isn't underrated... |

iGSM 30.08.2004 20:31 |
As a Deaky song it is. Having people assume Freddie wrote it makes me want to hit people and destroy buildings. |
Sonja 30.08.2004 20:44 |
You and I It's one of my favourites... but is it really underrated? I don't know, most of the fans really love that song. Maybe it is cos they never played it live... |
Zander05 30.08.2004 20:46 |
People have never tried to tell me Freddie wrote it. I can see where they'd think he did, but still - it's not unrecognised and therefore, not underrated. |
Music Man 30.08.2004 20:55 |
I couldn't tell you how underrated or whatnot it is, but my favorite John Deacon song is "You and I". |
iGSM 30.08.2004 20:59 |

"Who Needs You" - I think this is one of Queen's best songs, but it seems even a lot of fans hate it. |

most underrated?... hmm...,i think "Who needs friends?" :) (one of my favourite!) |
Shane Jazz 31.08.2004 02:43 |
In Only Seven Days is a lovely, understated little song....Plus, it allows the listener to regroup after the wonderful guitar assault of Dead on Time. |
Nikos 31.08.2004 02:46 |
I think It's Misfire I love it |
Albyboy 31.08.2004 03:25 |
You and I... Top shelf quality, better than at least three songs included in GH I and surely under-rated (maybe not by die-hard fans but surely by everybody else)... Albyboy |
Queenrocks4579 31.08.2004 03:54 |
i would have to say Need Your Loving Tonight is very under rated. Exspecially since another one bites the dust over shadows it on the game. |

You and I My Life Has Been Saved as well, but only in the original version; the on efrom MIH is bad... IMO, of course... |
Mayboy 31.08.2004 09:11 |
In only Seven Days is a great song and so underrated and definately My Life has been saved i love that song :) |
Lord Blackadder 31.08.2004 09:42 |
Spread Your Wings. It got to about number 35 in the U.K which was a travesty and therefore isn't very well known. Also Need Your Loving Tonight is excellent. |
Rick 31.08.2004 11:43 |
Need Your Loving Tonight, they released it as a single, but it wasn't a hit, peeked at number 40, I guess, but it's underrated, it reminds me of The Beatles, a good song. |
the oppositionist 31.08.2004 11:43 |
spread urrrrrr wings damn it! ace song! it should have been one of those team songs, like we are the champs and we will rock u |
cliveh 31.08.2004 13:35 |
I agree it has to be spreed your wings as the most uderated, not my fav song but certianly one of the best, it always sends shivers down my spine especially when done in live killers, i do also love who needs you. John is indeed an extrodonary (sorry for the spelling) song writter and I belive he was shadowed under the driving force of the others. But i still think Freddie was the best. |
Matti 31.08.2004 21:43 |
I love all of John's cutsey little songs. I think You And I is pretty underrated. |
Jimmy Dean 01.09.2004 00:00 |
Definitely You And I... would have made a great single, and should have replaced Long Away imho |

I hate to call Deacy's stuff cute, but the tunes he's written are so catchy and just ... argh, what's the word ---- DAMN! Cute. But on with it: stuff like Misfire and Who Needs You need more attention. It's like (in comparison) Sleeping on the Sidewalk, It's Late, and She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos) for Brian. Grand stuff, but stuff that's been lost. Poopy. |

Zander05 wrote: iGSM - I'm sorry that you have to put up with such ignorant people. You have my sympathies. It's not ignorance. Fans know who wrote what, but you can't have a go at people just because they hear a song and assume it was written by one member and not another. It's one of life's little gems to be able to enlighten people on issues like this. Reading this thread, it just highlights the fact that Deacy wrote some damn good songs, some good solid singles and some cracking album tracks. Deserves more attention yes. I like In Only Seven Days. I joke to myself that Craig David took that as inspiration in the same way that I wondered if Robbie had covered Let Me Entertain You before I heard his song! And for the person who labelled this a "newbie" topic: why? This a Queen forum, so why is this SUCH a bad topic? It's not asking for facts which might be able to be searched for (a particular issue for many here), it's asking for opinion which is what the forum is all about isn't it? |
Zander05 03.09.2004 16:28 |
What??? Newbie topic? Nope. I've been a Queen fan for years - unless you need to be one for 20 years and over not to be a newbie... I'm pushing 14 years in December! |
my_melancholy_blues 22.09.2004 17:43 |
im not sure how underrated it is... but i LOVE Spread Your Wings! |

In only seven days. What a lovely, delicate, intimate, full of hope and disillusion piece of music. When I listen to it I'm about to cry,it's very moving and underrated. |
MayFan 24.09.2004 01:36 |
Spead Your Wings is one of my all time favs of Queen no matter who wrote it. Need Your Loving Tonight and You and I are my other picks. |
Shane Jazz 24.09.2004 01:58 |
John's songs within the Queen canon are treated in a comparable way to George Harrison's songs within The Beatles. Just like George would always write solid, tuneful songs, now and then he would unleash a classic (Something, Here Comes the Sun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, If I Needed Someone). But overall, his songs would get less attention than Lennon/McCartney's. John shared a similar fate. His songs were almost always in the shadow of a May or Mercury composition. Even his first real classic, You're My Best Friend, was overshadowed immensely by BoRhap. But, also like George, his songs remained solid pieces of songwriting and eventually true classics emerged such as AOBTD, Break Free and Spread Your Wings. (the last one not being a major hit, but definitely a classic!) The only major difference is that George could sing, and had so many great songs stored up that he was able to release the fantastic All Things Must Pass. John, sadly, basically had to retire after Freddie died. But it does make you wonder if he has continued to write songs. I highly doubt that his creative streak also retired when Freddie passed. I'm sure he toys around with a bass or keyboard every now and again, and starts composing. The only problem is that he has no outlet to realize his songs now. Of course, giving them to Roger and Brian would be every fan's dream, but I think he's just content to enjoy his hard earned retirement. We do miss you though, Birdman! |
