Would Queen have been considered a goth band in the early days? They look sort of dead on the Queen II cover, and seem goth at the Rainbow show where Freddie's showing off his new gloves with claws on them.... |
iGSM 22.08.2004 11:51 |
In short, no. |

I think that, like any sane person, they would rather have had their nuts sucked out of an airplane window than ever be considered 'goth'. |
twowaymirrormountain 22.08.2004 12:01 |
No. While the first post in this thread makes a good case, I would say that their musical and video output, as well as their "looks" throughout the years are far to varied to pigeonhole them. Does Crazy Little Thing... make them a rockabilly band? |

I guess what I mean is that, like most great bands, Queen is unique enough not to be a part of any genre. |

don't be ridiculous, they made Medieval Metal :P |

Isn't a pre-requisite to being considered 'goth' that you are also under the age of 18? |

Note that Queen uses to be pigeonholed as either Glam Rock or "combined opera with rock", and in my opinion both statements are ridiculous. Glam - only in Fred's looks, perhaps Brian (but not even the whole band), and only in one or two songs out of 170. Opera + rock, only one section of one song, out of 170. To name them a rockabilly band (for 2 songs and the middle eight of 'Don't Try Suicide') would be more correct. Or less absurd |

Goth? No. Queen were always too optimistic to be goth. Sadly, though, they'll always be considered a rock band. It was the 70's so you were either rock or disco or punk. I don't think Queen stayed a rock band and I'm glad because rock music can be very one-dimensional and narrow-minded at times. Queen always did what they wanted to do and I'm glad. I don't think they can be pigeonholed into one category. |

bahahahah! thats funny! no they weren't! in the beginning, Queen said (well, i think they said) that they wanted to be a moody group, so they had the dark thing going on...but goth! hell no! |

"Would Queen have been considered a goth band in the early days? They look sort of dead on the Queen II cover, and seem goth at the Rainbow show where Freddie's showing off his new gloves with claws on them...." Well, some songs at that time contain goth-things, like in The March of the Black Queen for example: 'Black on, black on every finger nail and toe...' or 'I'm lord of all darkness, I'm Queen of the night..' So, it could be... |

So, it could be...Are you trying to say that Queen were goth just because of two lines from a song?!... Or just because of using terms like: "black", "darkness", "night"?! Wait a second! Then The Darkness are the most goth band ever, because of their name! Or were they goth because of Freddie's nails? Here's a funny link to that: "black on every finger nail" :) |

I didn't say they were, but what the heck, this is a stupid topic, the starter of this topic is a asshole. Queen were at that time pure heavy rock 'n' roll, not gothic. Only the clothes were gothic-style, not the music. |

Goth only became a genre around the late 70's a spin off of Punk probably led by the brilliant Dave Vanian although the Damned were only ever considered slightly Goth. link Vanian's influences were old horror movies and the music of the MC5, Stooges and Velvet Underground. This trend was later adapted by Bahaus, Sisters of Mercy and The Southern Death Cult etc. So in short Queen were pre goth and as a lot of people have pointed out far less one dimensional than most of their peers! Queen thankfully were one band which it has been impossible to pigeon hole which is probably been the main reason for their longevity! Many have tried all have failed!!! |
iGSM 23.08.2004 07:36 |
Damn you people in the 70's! Look what you've done. Punk..and..anarcho-punk. Yeah, that's my beef with the 70's. |
Fenderek 23.08.2004 07:55 |
They were first trash metal band in the world... In 1974 they recorded "Stone Cold Crazy"... |

I think they had some links to goth. but queen is too optimistic as someone wrote, for being goth.... But if you want to try to see it like that ... is nice to see that they had a very goth look in the early days... and songs very obscure too, (but not deppresive at all) White Queen and Son and daughter are very obscure to me... ands is not coincidence that the Trent Reznor covers of queen sounds so good.... Or the cover of that alternative band .. Concrete Blonde... of nevermore.... Well im seeing it through my own point of view because i like goth too :p and i know some queen fans that listen both too... |
Music Man 23.08.2004 18:07 |
Queen is about as Goth as Chaucer was Romantic. |

How about erm no?! I guess some would be forgiven for mistaking them as such for the cover of queen 2 but apart from some black hair and nails and occasional darker lyrics, not really. *Laughs imagining freddie and marilyn manson dueting* |

Um why am I an "asshole" just for asking that?!? A friend asked me that when he saw my Queen II poster, and I hadn't thought about it before. I know there weren't bands labeled as goth back then, but I thought maybe some of the things Queen did were sort of a precursor to that, and wonder if some of the kids going to Queen concerts in 1974 would be into goth stuff today. I mean look at this picture: link Obviously Queen doesn't fit one genre...it just seemed to me that maybe they ventured into that territory for a bit, then got out. I'm not sure why some people seemed to be so offended...I don't like goth stuff much myself either but thought maybe this was just another of the dozen genres Queen influenced. *shrugs* |

You just wanted to know it and that's allright. Sorry for being called like that... But, still, I can't see anything goth in that pic of Freddie: the nails? the eyeliner? his black eyes? his hair? Come on... |

I would be embarrassed to have my number one band a precursor or influence to Goth. |
