link Scroll down there for the scans. Okay, well the DVD is nothing to be excited about. It's just GM & Queen from the Freddie tribute doing 'Somebody To Love', followed by Elton & Queen doing 'The Show Must Go On' from that ballet thing. :-P Excellent quality but that's to be expected from a 10 minute disc. There's not even a menu.. it just plays 1 title with 2 chapters. It's full frame (but TSMGO is letterboxed) and PCM sound. No credits or anything either, other than copyright notices. Runs 10:16. I was hoping it might say 'from the forthcoming 'Greatest Video Hits 3', but no such luck. |

LOL. I meant to say 'tossers' or 'rotters' :-P Okay, I'll be happy to answer any questions. Now I need to make my listening copy of the CD :) |
Saint Jiub 17.08.2004 12:38 |
I can live without the ballet video. I can wait until november for the Milton Keynes DVD. I definitely will not be wasting money on this recycled stuff. This is worse than Greatest Shite III. Anyway, thanks for the info Jeffrey - it saves me a trip to Best Buy. |

I think it's a huge waste when they toss in these bonus DVDs that are so minimal in content. A lot of artists are releasing entire video collections as bonus discs with their greatest hits CDs. I would have paid twice as much if they'd included a DVD of some otherwise unavailable videos. As for the 2001 remastered sound, The Platinum Collection (U.S. version only since it came later) has the 2001 remasters of hits 1 & 2, I'm 99.9% sure from comparing. I do like having the original single mix of the car song.. and it sounds fab. Though I'm going to go against popular opinion here and say that the MK tracks sound a bit muffled, and Freddie's vocal on TYMD sounds kinda distorted. But they're still decent. The booklet is so-so. The promised "new liner notes by the band" aren't there. The notes are different than the usual ones, but even shorter and not worded in any way that would indicate it's Brian or Roger talking. And the photos.. LOL.. aside from the one on my site, there's a tinted version of the Queen II inside pic, the usual Queen II cover pic, the SHA cover and that's all. But for $12 it's not bad :) People pay more than that for scratchy singles just to have a certain version of a song. |

I really wanted to have Greatest Hits 1 with the ACTUAL cover (and tracklisting for that matter) so, Buying this wasn't a waste for me or my collection. I think I can do without the DVD though. I HATE Elton's versions of The Show Must Go On. ;P |
Penis - Vagina 17.08.2004 14:08 |
Yes, me too.. it's just not the same when it's part of a 2 or 3 disc collection :) I still want the original US version remastered though. I recently bought the vinyl (for $3.25), supposedly in mint condition.. should be here soon :) |
Penis - Vagina 17.08.2004 15:07 |
I just realized it has a CD Rom track: link The only thing it does is lead to a page at Hollywood Records which isn't there: link Nice work, Hollywood :-P |

What a joke The Bonus disc includes videos for George's Somebody To Love and Elton's The Show Must Go On from the Bejart Ballet. Now, what makes this a joke is the sticker listing the vids as STL and TSMGO (no mention of George or Elton) and saying that they have never been commercially released. Problem is, of course, that STL with George and TSMGO with Elton were released on the Greatest Hits III video that came out a few years back. These are not new or "never released." Either Best Buy or (more likely) Hollywood Records screwed up and lied. |
Penis - Vagina 17.08.2004 18:21 |
They lied about the 'unseen photos' and liner notes 'by the band' too, but these things happen :-P Maybe we'll get an extra special version for the 25th anniversary of Greatest Hits in 2 years. I can hardly wait for that! |
rhapsody__87 17.08.2004 23:08 |
I'm mad. I was all excited, sped to Best Buy after camp to get this GH deal and like everyone else said, the DVD was no big deal. It said it included TSMGO and I'm like, "oooh the montage video!! Score!" Of course we had to have Elton John. Of COURSE. Although the one thing I like about the STL video is that there's some different angles than the concert. Right after the audience sings "looooooove", Brian's face erupts into this huge smile and you just don't get that on the DVD (as in, the concert). |
Maz 18.08.2004 00:16 |
All I can say is that the MK DVD better be good to wash this awful cash-in taste out of my mouth. |
wstüssyb 18.08.2004 11:45 |
Blah, Thank god I didnt go buy it |
Penis - Vagina 18.08.2004 13:06 |
Maybe it's not for everyone, but think about it.. for $11.99 you get the 2001 remaster of Greatest Hits, nice new packaging, 3 tracks which are new to CD and two videos on DVD which might be a little silly, but they're free. |
goinback 18.08.2004 14:56 |
Actually a lot of younger fans probably would have *wanted* the DVD version of STL with George Michael (it was a hit after all)...so I think Hollywood/Best Buy just screwed themselves by not properly printing that on the label :) They should have put in large type that the package contains BOTH versions of STL.... Anyway did anyone notice how clear the intro to Bohemian Rhapsody is now? I thought my truck's stereo was just having a good day, but then the booklet said there used to be a hum in the background that they removed. |

My fault for starting a new topic but posting in the other also.. LOL, sorry :-P |
Whatinthewhatthe? 18.08.2004 21:38 |
Sorry, gang...it's the WORST Queen re-re-re-re-re-release to date. The sound on the DVD is bloody awful...and the CD itself is a huge joke. I tried it on digital and analog speakers and it sounds the same...muddy, heavy and too awful for words. I'm really, really ashamed of Hollywood Records taking advantage of the US Queen fans this way ("never-before-seen", "rare", "bonus tracks" ---YAAAH! Elektra or Capitol could have done a more than decent job on it.) It leaves one feeling like they opened a small package on Christmas morning hoping to find keys to a Jaguar...and ending up with a Yugo... |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 18.08.2004 22:38 |
I just ripped the CD into mp3 format and there were clicks here and there. Is the CD copy protected? The disc was completely clean. Adam |

goinback 19.08.2004 03:34 |
Will Best Buy accept returns of this CD? I thought about taking it in and showing them that there aren't any never-before-seen photos in it, etc. I was seriously on the edge of deciding whether to buy it or not, since I have all the songs on vinyl, cassette, 8-track and CD already. But the stickers on the front convinced me, and then I felt like an idiot when I got to the parking lot and opened it. |
Penis - Vagina 19.08.2004 06:12 |
Hehe, if you catch them on a good day, the best you can hope for is credit towards something else, but never a refund. I disagree about the sound being bad on either disc.. I think you must need some adjustments in your system Lisa. This remaster (save for the bonus tracks) was done at the same time and by the same guy (Peter Mew) as the other 2001 remasters which you've raved about in the past. I did say how I thought the live tracks sounded muddy and slightly distorted, but others raved about the quality even from very low quality samples which were posted the other day. I'm In Love With My Car sounds the best it ever has in my opinion, it's clear but not harsh, nice and full and rumbly as a car song should be :-) And the PCM sound on the DVD is flawless too. I actually thought it was slightly clearer than most video based audio. Adam, I had no trouble making my copy.. not a single glitch. Even though Universal (one of the first copy control advocates) is distributing their stuff now, Hollywood seems to be against copy control and I'm thankful for that :) Edit: It might have something to do with the CD-ROM track though. When I extracted the entire disc as one file in Sound Forge (with track markers), it gave an extra track at the end which was silent. But again, I had no problems. It might confuse some drives or software though. |
Penis - Vagina 19.08.2004 22:37 |
Dan told me he was unable to rip the first and last tracks. It's either the cd-rom track messing up certain drives, or maybe random copy control. |
Whatinthewhatthe? 20.08.2004 20:45 |
I'll take my Japanese Greatest Hits II over that overhyped release, thank you! QP really mislead fans this time. Perhaps the DVD is a bad copy, it does sound BAD, I'll trade it in for another copy, but the CDR portion of the CD will not play nor will it access the Hollywood Records site -- not surprising, eh? I'm In Love With My Car is a good cut. I saw some chap on Ebay selling a Queen CD single of that in a red case. Not certain if it has the video as a bonus, but one copy went for a staggering $52 US dollars today. YIKE! |
Penis - Vagina 21.08.2004 07:48 |
Well I'm not sure what the Japanese Greatest Hits II has to do with this, though one advantage Americans got by having our Platinum Collection delayed a year is that we got the 2001 Japanese remasters of hits I & II in ours and again, when I posted about the U.K. vs. U.S. versions to find out how they differed, you said you preferred the sound of the U.K. version.
I get the impression you just pick an argument about sound quality out of the blue without merit.
And yes, when I last checked, the Hollywood page linked from the CD wasn't there.
There is a recent promo single for the car song. I believe it's just the one track. That's the type of thing I wouldn't bother collecting.

Jeffrey, I'm not trying to start any arguments. I'm just ticked about sound quality in US Queen releases in general, and this new release is no exception. I was expecting something different for a change (I had spoken with two HW execs on a conference call in July and they *promised* this one would be "a lot better than recent Queen re-releases" -- HA! Fooled again!)...but oh well!! I'm very picky on sound quality on anything. When Rush finally released Vapor Trails, no surprise that there was a lot of distortion and overemphasized heaviness in sound (the producer was Paul Northfield, same one who produced Hole, amongst other bands, so that was to be expected). And Beatles "1" a few years ago. A little overmixed, especially on the early 60s songs, but then again there's the issue of the age of the original master tapes. Since the technology was pretty basic then and certainly nothing close to what it is now, trying to make something older sound newer and better sometimes makes it sound even worse...as in the case of the new WWRY GH. You can improve too much, and in doing so loses something along the way. So I will listen to the older, better versions and get off the soapbox for now. |
Wilki Amieva 21.08.2004 17:30 |
I have to disagree with you this time. The 2001 remaster is the best GH available, as it was mastered using the highest quality transfers from the original 2-track tapes. Besides, the WWRU edition has 3 bonus tracks (and an extra DVD at BestBuy) while the japanese releases just one (TeTo single version). HR have certainly improved their CD releases since the 2003 issue of Wembley. I admit that HR commited some mistakes in the past, but some of them were not their fault. Properly speaking, the only remasters they managed were the 1991 ones, and they didn't come out so bad considering the technology available at that time and the logistic difficulties regarding 'overseas remastering'. If you experience sound problems on everything you hear, I guess you should check your equipment. BTW, I'mInLoWiMyCa single version was previously released on CD twice (BoRhap 3" and CLASSIC Capitol promo). |
Penis - Vagina 21.08.2004 17:57 |
Yeah, and the two biggest flaws in the 1991 remasters were actually done by Kevin Metcalfe of the Queen camp, not Hollywood. Missing parts of It's Late & In The Lap.. which were replaced rather quickly when the problem became known. He continued to work for Queen through 'Rocks' and can also be held responsible for the Fat Bottomed Girls error. The 1991 remasters are actually pretty good and have the advantage of the tapes being 10 years younger too :) |

Basically only 4 songs changed for the remaster.. A Kind Of Magic, Radio Ga Ga, Innuendo and The Miracle are now full-length rather than fading a few seconds early. The actual edited tracks and single mixes haven't been replaced though. Here's a comparison page I made: link As for LOMO, it contains this version: link |

seriously everyone take a deep breath, you should all be glad that Hollywood still cares enough about Queen to re-release anything, Or that Queen Productions hasn't licensed out the songs to make even more shitty greatest hits albums (do you know how many other classic rock artists greatest hits albums there are that you can buy in truck stops on some label like "digital age" or some shit like that???) "Queen" as it were haven't recorded anything new in years, and although YES lots of material exists in the archives, we all have to admit that NO it's not all goin to be released anytime soon, and even when it is you'll probably find somethign else to complain about like "oh we got ripped off they didn't include the 5th demo vocals bass only version of radio gaga where you can hear 1 piano note being played at the beginning" or something like that. Seriously you should all be glad Hollywood still believes Queen can make them money, because if they didn't they wouldn't have 3 different greatest hits packages on the shelves right now, would they? The Greatest Hits package is simply to promote the musical, hell, Van Halen released a new CD comp. when they started touring again, and didn't Rush release a cover song EP for their new tour (And If I remember the tour was announced first becasue my dad is a huge Rush fan and told me the tour was for their anniversary or something NOT to promote the EP!!!) blah blah blah, if you don't like it don't buy it it's that simple, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth, I only started listening to Queen around the time Made In Heaven came out, and listened to Greatest Hits the first time when I was 9, almost 10 years ago!!! and I'm suprised at the longevity Hollywood records has been able to get out of a band who hasn't had a new recording since I started listening to them. You all have probably been fans longer than I, but I've been there for all the comps, greatest hits, classic queen, rocks, greatest hits 3 (which I actually liked because introduced me to the solo material), and platinum collection. But I also have almost every album in every format it was made and all the solo albums, and all I can say is I like having a nice shiny new relase in my hands, even though it only has a few tracks I haven't heard before I'm glad there's new relases on the shelves becasue that means people stilll like Queen and will still spend money on them. there. I've said it. |
Penis - Vagina 22.08.2004 22:29 |
Well said, VGB! After spending $30 a pop on card sleeves, it's kinda refreshing to get a rather nice new version of something for only $11.99 (now 13.99 I believe). This is stupid and hardly matters, but I made a mistake initially. The DVD is not PCM, it's Dolby Digital 2.0. Silly me, I had my player set to downmix to PCM so I got the wrong display on my receiver. Oops :-P Actually this could account for my saying the sound was so good.. I've discovered that, at least on my player, having it downmix to PCM before going into the receiver seems to improve the sound of 2.0 stuff, makes it seem more CD like. |
