We all know how musicians are either friends or foes among each other...
...Like Freddie and Elton being friends, while Elton and The Stones hate each other.
Queen (mostly thanks to Mr. nice guy Brian) have a lot of 'buddies'. Many of them seen at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
However I don't know about other musicians who are foes of Queen. Does anyone?
I was going to mention Robert Smith (The Cure) for his recent comments against Queen.
Also perhaps the Gallagher brothers (Oasis) who are pretty much foes of everyone in the music industry.
They made a few enemies when they played Sun City but they were all second rate artists pretending to have a social conscience in order to boost sales.
fatty.
"I was going to mention Robert Smith (The Cure) for his recent comments against Queen."
Does a bad comment make you a foe?
Same goes for when someone famous mentions they like a Queen song. Does it make them a fan? Or someone who likes one or two songs
Kansas' lead singer called Freddie an asshole and the rest of the band "great... gay (not that there's something wrong with it)". I don't know if he's an ennemy of Queen, however, his words really drove me mad.
In regards to Robert Smith, our beloved Freddie said it best "If I had the hair and the fingernails now, I would look ridiculous. I looked ridiculous then but it worked." Words of wisdom, Mr. Smith. :)
Being a little critical, i often wonder just how many people who were at freddies tribute were real friends of the band or just publicity seekers. maybe its obvious, but seal and lisa werent all that back then...
Liza was invited because as Brian mentioned, that's what Freddie would have wanted and he'd be glad to have her on his footsteps.
I don't see any of them being publicity seekers, except for Spinal Tap.
no, lisa stansfield! nhot liza! i know freddie would have loved her being there- she was one of his favourite actresses! but seal and lisa stansfield werent that close to queen and were in the middle of launching careers really.
Seal was the artist of the moment so it was publicity for the concert, I guess. GnR would be 50-50 I'd say, they were hugely famous and also Axl liked the band, same as Metallica. To some extent Extreme.
I think, as I said before, that we can't take all of those comments too seriously, they were at a Freddie tribute, so in related interviews and backstage stuff they "had to" put them as their top band and everything. I don't mean GnR hated Queen, but I guess, besides Axl, they wouldn't be so much into them. And Mr. Rose's songwriting is not so Queen influenced, except in some subtle details, and the songforms (but those could have been Led Zeppelin or David Bowie influenced too).
But, back to the main thread: John said somewhere in the 70s that he was very busy with the Queen tours and missed the chance to see Kiss live. I think his exact words were "I've never seen a Kiss concert"; but in most pro-files, it appears as if John hated them and he didn't say that anywhere.
Both Slash and Axl idolized Queen. Most of the talent there were either
1.) Friends of Queen
2.) Influenced by Queen (GNR, Def Lep, Metallica, Extreme, George Michael)
3.) Influenced Queen (Daltrey of The Who and Plant of Led Zeppelin)
I think Queen would have invited people like Seal and Stansfield to sing there,
.1. They obviously did like the music so were fans, maybe not best friends like Elton, Axl, Plant etc.
.2. It would be rude to say no.
Question: Why did the Stones not play at the tribute?
There's no song from Guns N' Roses that sounds like anything from Queen and Elton John... except for November Rain perhaps.
Yet Axl constantly says that both of them have been his major influences.
Seb, just because someone is influenced by Queen, doesn't mean that they have to sound like them in any way.
And Seal definitely seemed very happy to be there. Sharing that story of him crying when he first heard WWTLF from Highlander.
Peace,
Adam.
I don't mean being influenced by someone is to sound the same. But I don't find any clear Queen influence in November Rain, maybe some subtle ones. November and Bo Rhap are completely different. They're long, and that's their only common aspect. For that matter November can be Axl's Stairway, or Axl's Prophet's Song, or Axl's March Of The Black Queen, or Axl's Hey Jude...
Estranged otoh does seem to me more Queen influenced than Zeppelin.
Puppet Dangelus wrote: Seal's story did make it seem like he was glad to be there. His singing on 'Who Wants To Live Forever' was my most favorite performance of the day! :D
agree. the way he changed some of the notes in the song just made it stand out so well. however, i deliberately turn off lisa s's songs on the concert because her style completely ruins the songs. her silly little twiddly add- ons just piss me off!
Also, Slash played with Brian in 92 on the Tonight Show. And G&R needed no publicity at that point. Heck, I'd wager they wouldn't even need it now. People loved them then and they still have a hugely loyal fanbase - including many higher-ups at MTV. SO they were there out of respect to Queen.
Spinal Tap are Spinal Tap.
Bowie and Elton both obviously had personal connections to the band.
Apart from the Tribute, the Foos obviously love Queen as do the Peppers. Also, deceased VJ JJ Jackson adored them. I'd heard him speak before but on Becoming Queen he promotes them nicely!
