The "Live at Wembley" set seems to be one of the most debated Queen works at this forum. Do you think the music (NOT the performance, video, or atmosphere) makes the CD worth buying? Meaning, is it good enough to purchase? |
YourValentine 05.08.2004 10:48 |
By no means. It's two CDs full of Queen music, who would like to have this? Sure nobody who reads a Queen forum. |
Fenderek 05.08.2004 11:08 |
For a fan- it is. For a collector- a must. General rock public- no, it isn't... Can't imagine someone who's over the moon about LIVE IN LEEDS The Who or HOW THE WEST WAS WON and ISN'T a Queen fan enjoying this particular concert... Set list too obvious and performance too weak... MILTON KEYNES will be a different story... |
QueenZeppelin 05.08.2004 11:12 |
By "music" I meant how well they performed it...and when I said "NOT performance" I meant the visual. |
Fenderek 05.08.2004 11:21 |
In my opinion (well known, anyway) the performance was definitely the worst during the entire Magic Tour... And it wasn't the best tour either (sorry William, sorry MAGIC TOUR fans...!), IMO... If you listen to Budapest, Knebworth or Laiden- the performance is much, much better. Freddie's voice on saturday night @ Wembley was in pretty bad shape, and the versions of IWTBF or WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS are absolutely awful, even though overdubbed... The whole band sound a bit tied and nervous, how different to what happened only 24 hours before!!!! I find it pretty boring as well... Threre are exellent bits, mind you!!! All in all however, IMO, it's not one of their greatest gigs... What the heck- it's not even one of their better gigs... ps Read this: link |

One of my favorite magic tour concerts are Madrid and Knebworth. I really don't like the overdubs on the wembley DVD but besides that the performance is good but Freddie's voise wasn't in a good shape that night, maybe the first night at wembley was even a bit better.. |

I don't know why there are either people who say that the LW'86 is crap, either people who say that the same gig is their best ever... Queen themselves tend to look at it as their best. Are they only a bunch of idiots? I got the audio CD with this concert before I ever saw the video. And I must say it cast a spell on me... It was real magic. I liked it better than WWRY - Montreal or Hammersmith'75 or Live Killers or Live Magic... But perhaps I'm nothing but a crazy Queen fan, since I like almost all of their songs (I only hate Body Language and I dislike Drowse and some tracks from the FG album). So... I THINK THE CD IS WORTH BUYING. IT'S THE TRUE MAJESTIC QUEEN! |
supernova190188 06.08.2004 08:44 |
Yes you should buy it, it is a great album and definetly worth the money, it's absolutely brilliant |
QueenFan29 06.08.2004 09:31 |
Yes Yes buy it! I bought the audio Cd first also. I didnt even know they had a dvd for it out. But as soon as i heard it, i pretty much had to have the dvd to go along with it so i could see it. I liked it alot. Go on out and buy it! |

So they/he don't remember... of course it was important for them- two night @ Wembley... But Friday's performance was far better!!! Does Brian remember it...? Very curious, actually... |
akan 06.08.2004 09:58 |
the friday night concert is technically better than the saturday concert, but the saturday concert has more groove and feeling than the friday concert |

I think they may have released Wembley so soon because they actually had it available in decent quality. And it's pretty cool to have played at Wembley :) But listening to Wembley makes my throat hurt when I hear Freddie having to scream to get any sound out. The beginning of TYMD for instance just sounds like his voice could go at any time. I still like it but I like Budapest better...it seems to have more energy. Plus you can actually see the lights since the show was at night.... |

Are they only a bunch of idiots?Okay, Mr Magic tour expert, tell me why the first Wembley night, Knebworth, Madrid, Berlin, Leiden, and Newcastle shows aren't better than Wembley second night, and I'll stand right beside you with your Wembley second night perfection syndrome. People who have listened to the above Magic Tour concerts can judge all of the shows objectively. You're just comparing it to the other official releases. Queen never regarded Wembley as one of their best. They have just done so much with it because it was one of the few that were properly filmed with the intent for release. You don't see Brian talking about Glasgow 77 and Newcastle 79, do you? Of course not, because there is no commercial reason for any media attention. However, I think those are two of the greatest shows Queen ever performed. andrew wrote: the friday night concert is technically better than the saturday concert, but the saturday concert has more groove and feeling than the friday concertYeah, I'll have to agree with you there. |

Second, I remember I've asked why this show is so debated. It can't be both crap and masterpiece at the same time. Either it's good, either it's crap... The truth is it's not crap. The second Wembley night had more feeling in it... it says it all. Music (and art) are more about feeling than about technical perfection, in my opinion. I didn't say the Wembley second night is Queen's best gig, I just said Queen themselves tend to look at it as their best. It's their opinion, not mine. If I had seen all the other Magic Tour shows, I'd have provided you with my precious opinion. I said only that I liked this concert more than their other releases, you can't kill me for that, right? Besides that, QueenZeppelin asked if this CD is good enough to purchase. That's what I've said, it's their best live album... so far, at least. Queen never regarded Wembley as one of their best. You should see what they've said while promting the DVD about the show. It so happens that I subscribed to the QOL newsletter just before its release and you should read in what terms Queen was officially talking about it. I'm sorry I don't have the text on this PC, I'll send it to you as soon as I'll return at home. Lord Fenderro wroteBrian in his soapbox recently said they were watching Milton Keynes and he said he was surprised how good they were...He didn't say it was their best gig ever, did he? Of course MK is a great concert... all of their concerts are great, most of them should get official releases too. |

Music (and art) are more about feeling than about technical perfection, in my opinion. Is there no such thing as a gray area between masterpiece and crap? This has been discussed many times before, the the general consensus between people who have heard many Magic Tour concerts is that the show was technically/musically not the best of the tour, but in terms of audience, atmosphere, and stage show, it was probably the best. It's amazing how many people haven't been able to understand this division between aspects of a concert; and I hope you're not the next one, as you seem to have a good head on your shoulders. I didn't say the Wembley second night is Queen's best gig, I just said Queen themselves tend to look at it as their best. It's their opinion, not mine. But when one has listened to 250 concerts, I think they can give a more objective opinion in regards to comparison to other shows than one who has heard less than ten. Again, Queen praise the concert, because in many aspects, it is indeed one of their greatest concerts. They're able to talk about it so much because it's commercialized, and therefore people know it well. If Wembley wasn't filmed for release, you wouldn't see Brian talking about it, because not many people would care! |

Look- for those of us who were born in the late 80's (and there are quite a few of us) DVDs like the wembly performance are the only way we'll ever get to see Queen live! They may not be the best but unfortunatley, we do not have the memories of live performances to compare them with. So unless something better comes along, for us, Wembly is worth it! |

I'm not much older than you are! |

The CD was re-issued in my country at $10 more than the DVD. I couldn't understand it when I saw it. You get the entire CD on the DVD. Save your money and turn the TV off and listen to the DVD through your stereo. |
