Well, I was just wondering, when Vanilla Ice sampled Queens beat from Under Pressure, did he get sued? I saw him on the TV yesterday, and he was saying stuff like, ' mine goes duh dun dun dun buh bun dun, and theirs go duh duh dun dun bun bun. It's not the same.' Sorry, I cant type the beat into words. ta-ta |

As I said in the other copy of this thread in the 'Personal' section, I have an interview with Brian where he talks about this (thanks Miss J!)... I'll see if I can't record it onto my computer and share it on my site sometime in the near future. *Wow! My posts here and there are so osimilar that you'd almost thing I copied and pasted! |

I've read that interview with Brian, and it says how he thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal, so he didn't pay any mind to it. And then, of course, it became a huge hit. But the band received royalties for his sampling, even though he claims he added an extra 'ting'. |

I don't like Vanilla Ice or any of his songs. If he has more than just that song. I don't think anybody liked it, i think they just wanted something new, and got it. He was just a white MC hammer. and i also heard he sampled 'play that funky music' also, before ice ice baby. man, he needs to write his own material... ta-ta |

This topic wasn't a comparison of the two songs but about whether or not Vanilla Ice was sued for ripping off the bassline. |

I like Ice ice baby more then UP, as I heard Ice ice baby 1st, as I was around 15/16 when it came out and was very popular, I didnt hear UP till after the tribute concert, when I stole classic Queen from the local store and thought what the hell is Queen playing a Vanilla Ice tune, my uncle thought ice ice baby was UP playing at 1st, lol |

Well in my case I also heard Ice Ice baby before Under pressure...but I never, never like ice ice baby. I've always thought the video and the song sucked, and that the singer looked awfully dumb. And when I heard Under Pressure and realized it was the "original" one, I just thought "God this song's great. Ice ice baby is a shame..." |

Ice Ice something or other Robert Van Winkle I think is his real name, was on the Surreal Life last year and was a riot!, with Tammy Faye Baker and a bunch of other losers Ron Jeremy is it, that porn guy, was on it, Tracy Bingham from Baywatch...what a hoot. Ice..sorry Van Winkle, said he was sickened by that song and his "Vanilla Ice" personna, that that was all behind him. Then the Surreal Life gang went to a kareoke bar and they and the crowd bugged him to do "Ice Ice Baby". He did do it, then said he LOVED doing it again and the "adoration" of the crowd and he felt validated! I almost stuck my finger down my throat! Poor Queen...then again...after they DID sue...they got a S******D of royalties. Nice Nice Baby! |

Actually, Vanilla Ice didn't get "sued", as much. I asked Brian about this myself, and he replied, saying that it wasn't his band that went after Vanilla Ice, but rather their record company went after them, and ensured that Queen got their royalties. If you guys want me to quote Brian's actual words on this, let me know. |

This has got the stupidest most obvious, clear as a bell, no doubt, no brainer questions ever asked on the Queenzone. It's Ice Ice Baby of course! That Vanilla Ice fellow was a true genuis in every sense of the word. Words cannot contain his mightiness and glory. To write a song as sublime and numinous as Ice Ice Baby is a feat that ranks up there with the building of the pyramids. |

Playful as a pussycat wrote: "Vanilla Ice" stole the beat from blessed QueenDear pussy, that is not "stealing". That is called SAMPLING. The whole rap / hip-hop musical production is based on taking the samples of sounds which already exist. Whether those samples are famous or not, very old or not, from jazz, soul, funk or rock, it doesn't matter... In the early days of hip-hop production (1980-1987) samples were usually taken from 70's funk music, and the original creators of that used sounds were not mentioned on the album sleeves... But eventually, producers started to use everything - any sound that is interesting to them. In the late 80's and early 90's some prosecutions and suits happened, and that cases became (and remained) famous. As a result, today on sleeve of (almost) any album (which uses others' music samples) there are credits to the original creators of those samples. You all seem to forgot the text from the inner-sleeve of Queen's "Greatest hits II" album: "...in 1990 the bass and piano featured again on Vanilla Ice's number one single Ice Ice Baby". So, it seems to me that Queen were even proud - that THEIR sound managed to become number one hit AGAIN! So, there is no reason to hate Vanilla Ice; Queen didn't mind, and what he did is not like those disgusting cases of making covers. "Ice ice baby" is not "Under pressure" cover, it only uses bass and piano line as a (clever) sample. That's all. With the hyper-production in the hip-hop world for the last 10 years, there is hardly any old song left without being sampled somewhere. In 1983 Grandmaster Flash sampled "Another one bites the dust" in his epic master-piece instrumental called "The adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the wheels of steel". One of (many) reasons why that case of sampling is so interesting, is the well-known story about how Chic's "Good times" inspired Deacon to make "Another one bites the dust". And DJ Flash, being a truly "Grandmaster", put in one song both samples: "Good times" AND "Another one bites the dust"! The result: hit in 1983, a classic in 2005. In 1988, the living legends of hip-hop, Public Enemy, sampled the song "Flash" for their "It takes a nation of millions to hold us back", the most influential (and probably the best) rap album ever. (Digression #1: executive producer was Rick Rubin, who produced "We will rock you - 'ruined' remix". Digression #2: that album was the first to talk about (than) newly risen problem of accusing rap artists for "stealing" samples. Digression #3: I'm probably the only person who's favourite groups are Queen and Public Enemy, so there's no-one happier than me for PE sampling Queen!) In 1998, NY rap group DAS EFX used sample from "Sail away sweet sister". You can read more about it here (my post is the last one): link |

Nevertheless, "rap" is missing two things. Either an e at the end of the word, or a c at the beginning of the word. This is how I feel. I don't hate it, but let's face it, it ain't music. |

Brian stated on Rockline in 1991 he took offense with what Vanilla Ice did with Under Pressure and there was a lawsuit over that according to Rockline host Bob Coburn. When I first heard IIB I thought it was UP as I first heard UP when I was a kid on the radio but that a**hole Winkle stole from Queen which was a blasphemy! |

As for sampling or borrowing bass lines..........what about John's big hit? "Another One bites the Dust"? Definately taken or borrowed from "Sugar Hill Gang's" "Christmas Rapping" circa 1979 Yet never mentioned. |
lozitopj 23.11.2005 12:02 |
Here in the states, when Ice Ice Baby was a hit, Brian May made sure that Under Pressure was not forgotten by the American crowd. In 1991, there was a show called "My Generation," on Vh1 and Brian May said "this song was written by us and not by a white boy from the streets." Vanilla Ice should have given credit to Queen + Davis Bowie. He defintely had to pay them for using that traditional bass line. Take care and have a wonderful day!!!! |

I caught the end of Vanilla Ice's movie the other night and I've got to say what an amazing talent. His performance in Ninja Turtles 2 was oscar-worthy to say the least. I can't believe his career was so short lived. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go shave some lighting bolts in my hair. |
