just a thought but if you had to choose which decade of Queen songs do you prefer? the 70's with killer queen and b rhap etc , the 80' with under pressure, kind of magic, i want to break free etc or the 90's Queen with show must go on , i want it all etc. i think if i had to choose it would be the 80's Queen |
Fenderek 30.07.2004 08:55 |
70s, no question |
Fenderek 30.07.2004 08:56 |
I WANT IT ALL is on "The Miracle" album therefore it's from 80s, not 90s... |
Ramses 30.07.2004 09:02 |
wow...good question. Hmm...If I had to choose I'd choose 70's Queen. I loved the music and I loved the shows they put on with the "long hair" Freddie. I sometimes see the late 80's shows as more thematic productions than simple concerts. That's not really a good or bad, but there is something special about seeing them just play and the only stage act is Freddie prancing around. The 90's albums were much more...mortal I guess is the word. It's so sad to listen to the MIH album or Innuendo. As for the 80's in terms of music...i prefer "No Synthesizers!" :-) |
Mean Mistreater 30.07.2004 09:18 |
70's hands down - it took me years to start actually liking the 80s material, and i still rarely listen to anything past hot space. i have to be in a certain mood to listen to anything past that album - that over processed, synthesized sound just doesn't cut it |

I'm with you on that one- BUT Miracle and Innuendo I like very much... Just this 1982-86 period... |

70's! Dito: too much I don't like from the 80's (although there are more then one or two of my all time favourites on The Miracle. That remains one of my favourite albums). But I don't like most of 80's pop/rock in general. The 90's were very good to just sublime at the time. But hey, we are talking only ONE album and some bits and pieces here. And although they made some of their best pieces of work in the 90's, quite a bit of it to me sounds a bit outdated nowadays. Besides I also don't like the synthesized, poppy sound. I especially hate those 'electronic' and unnatural sounding drums from those days. Roger is a great drummer but on lots of songs on Innuendo and Made In Heaven it's like we're listening to a drumcomputer... Ooh... are we being critical here |
Mean Mistreater 30.07.2004 09:36 |
i prefer miracle to innuendo then made in heaven...the works and the magic album collect dust at my house...actually i think that the miracle album is flawless...yes even with party and khashoggi's ship...but still i don't put it in the same category with any of the 70's albums and fenderek - totally agree with you on the wembley concert - but i'll be quiet since most of the queenies here adore that concert |
Into La Ment 30.07.2004 10:39 |
I'd have to agree with most, and say '70s, no questions asked. I still don't like listening to the majority of their '80s output. '90s was an improvment, though. |
Brian_Mays_Wig 30.07.2004 12:11 |
Early 70s stuff is superb, but Queen were a band that moved with the times, so I like most of thier stuff, I always thought that NOTW was a little bit weak, but apart from that, great tunes, sounds, effects throughout. Miracle/Innuendo, fantastic rock albums. |
Oberon 30.07.2004 12:14 |
I'd choose 70s too - but the late 70's, like '78/'79 'cause I think musically and in live performances that was probably the most intense. I love Queen all the way through though and like the fact that they did change constantly. The major factor in music that attracts me is variety, and Queen had that in abundance. They never stuck to a formula, they always mixed it up and did something different. Sometimes that difference wasn't fantastic (Hot Space) but it was always interesting, and i think this is the main thing. This is why I don't "dislike" the 80s synth era. They dabbled heavily early on (Hot Space, The Works), then ebbed a little (Magic), revisted a little more (Miracle), but then found the right balance (Innuendo) and completed that in MIH. I can't really fault them, although there are songs I like more than others. Call me a Stepford if you like, but I don't think anything was THAT bad. |
Gunpowder Gelatine 30.07.2004 12:30 |
If I had to choose, the 70's, because I love every album from that period, whereas I think the 80's albums aren't as amazing, though they're still good. |
KillerQueen840 30.07.2004 13:16 |
I would choose the 70's!!!!! |
♥Killer_Queen1946♥ 30.07.2004 13:22 |
I would pick 70's Queen. I liked this era because they were new and they sounded brilliant! The 80's has its applause in its own special way, also. The 90's too. But I Love The 70's! Especially with Freddie's , Roger's, and John's long hair. Brian's hair seemed to stay the same through the years... ta-ta |

1974-81 Queen (minus Flash Gordon) is gold. I think that they should do a double-CD set with just tracks from that era on both CDs. I like the 80's stuff too, don't get me wrong, but in the 70's, Queen was at their best; as a hard-rock, heavy metal outfit with a nice amount of pomp and glam injected into it. This era of Queen is what put the group on the level of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath; and it was this era that influenced the hard-rock acts of the next generation. Guns N'Roses, Def Leppard, George Michael, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Metallica and The Smashing Pumpkins among other cite Queen as an influence. (George Michael may not be had-rock but he deserves to be listed here) However, I do believe that had Queen done a USA tour to support their 1984 effort, "The Works," I think they're popularity State-side would have held up a little better, perhaps continuing the widespread appeal of their 70's glory. |
Pim Derks 30.07.2004 14:38 |
Queen was brilliant up to and including ADATR. NOTW-Game is more of the same. After that things radically changed - until they went back to real music with Innuendo. My favourite period is ofcourse the 70's - with 1973-1976 in particular. My least favourite period is 1984-1986: poor albums, concerts I don't really like etc. |
lottie88 01.08.2004 13:38 |
I love the music from the 70's most of all. It was pure rock and there was so much feeling in it. I don't know why, but the 80's and 90's don't seem as pure and wonderful as the 70's. Although I give the band a lot of credit for trying new sounds and music. They had to change their sound a little bit sometime. |
SergeantPepperDG 01.08.2004 17:01 |
70s! The 80s stuff was still good. I didn't even like 80s music before I heard Queen. |
VmS 01.08.2004 17:09 |
The songs of theirs that I don't like so much come from the 80's period (probably about 1982-86) but after that they got better (in my opinion) again. Most of my more favourite songs of theirs come from the 70's but I like their late 80's/early 90's stuff too (for example Innuendo, These are the days, Miracle). However, I think overall I prefer their work from the 70's. It's what I listen to the most anyway. |

It was the exact same thing with me. I used to listen to a radio station, and every weekend they'd play 80's music, and I used to complain about how much I hated it! |
Whisperer 01.08.2004 18:10 |
I like most 1986 and 1989-91. They were HUGE in 1986 and they live performances sounded superb. Musically I like the last years most, mostly because Freddie's voice was so amazing then. I dislike the live perfromances of the 70s, because their stage outfits looked terrible and the best songs had not yet been written. |
Koolkikiland 01.08.2004 19:27 |
70's of course. But I have to confess that I'm surprised most seem to think so highly of Innuendo. I'm just being honest too - I don't hear what other's seem to like so much about it. The writing was a little better but nothing near their 70's material. Freddie's voice sounds so limited - like he's constantly FORCING out the high notes - it's painful to listen to. I also think I never could adjust to the synth sounds they used - always these generic string-like pad factory presets that seem to be used just to fill in the cracks that other groups use all the time. That's what makes 70's Queen so unbeatable - they were so organic, customized and just utterly unique. The writing was so good. You can just tell they put so much effort into each section of very song. . . and Freddies' tone was so pure and clear and agile. Even their British "flavor" was so much stronger then - certain references and phrases in their songs, for instance, just added to that uniqueness. Being an Indiana-raised American farmboy, I loved that (Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, for instance). All I know is, even after nearly 30 years of listening to the first few albums, I still feel the hair stand on the back of my neck when I listen to them. . . and I don't get that (but on very few occassions) after 1980. Dave |
jericho05 01.08.2004 19:46 |
The 70's of course. Anything up to and including A Day At The Races is immortal. And they were at the peak of their live powers in 1977. Other albums are merely Very Good and the live sound of the 80's seems far too rehearsed and forced. |
Miracle Man 01.08.2004 23:17 |
I would have to say the 80's. As a matter of fact I love alot of things about the 80's. I was a teenager and loved other groups like Duran Duran as well as most of the "Hair Bands". Ahhhh the memories. |
deleted user 02.08.2004 00:38 |
actually i love all three but the 80's a bit more just a little bit more |

I think 90s Queen was great except for We Will Rock You with Five - ugh! No-one but u is great as is all of made in Heaven but 70s is probably best - HELL! It's all good |

WWRY with Five??? Dont get me started. BTW, wasnt that 2000?? I may be wrong. |
Mr.Jingles 02.08.2004 12:31 |
Many of you think that Queen only started following the mainstream on their albums in the 80s, but the truth is that Queen started doing that with 'News Of The World' when they went more towards the hard rock/punk edge of those days. However, from 'Jazz' up until 'The Miracle' Queen was basically a mainstream rock/pop band. Yet I can't complain much about the stuff of that 1978-1989 period, except for 'Hot Space'. The best period was definitelt from 'Queen II' to 'A Day At The Races'. |

And that was only one song. The others are hardly punk influenced at all. As for the hard rock, well that was always there I think. They just mixed it up constantly. Even in the 80's I think they still mixed it up. Think of Tear It Up on the Works or One Vision and Princes Of the Universe. Great rock tracks. For me, I can understand that people don't like the synths, and I can see that some of it could be done with Brian's guitars, but I don't have a big problem with how queen used synths. The only songs where I think it's maybe too much is some of the Miracle tracks. |
Lord Blackadder 03.08.2004 09:27 |
70's. Then 90's. But 80's still the best thing of that decade. |
Mr.Jingles 03.08.2004 09:46 |
Keep in mind that in most of their songs Queen did a proper use of synths. The problem is that people never mention it. It's true that in the beginning Queen didn't really know how to use the synths. Hence why some songs 'Play The Game', or 'Another One Bites The Dust' sound like a cheesy sci-fi flick. But I think that Queen eventually learned how to use them to make the song better instead of ruining it. |
Giacco 73 05.09.2004 00:22 |
70's for the studio albums. 80's for the live performances. 90's for the neverending legend. |

I myself like all of them! I did like the period of 80s though I must admit i like best, y does everyone complain about it so much :( |
Albyboy 05.09.2004 06:40 |
I totally agree with Koolkikiland and Mr. Jingles... Queen's first five albums were something stunning!!! Anyway, I believe it's difficult to draw out a comparison between, let's say, "Queen II" and "A Kind of Magic"... It hardly seems the same band. Few other bands went through such a significant metamorphosis during their career... 70s rules!!! Albyboy |
Simmer 05.09.2004 06:50 |
The 70's are superior. Everything the band did turned to gold. |
syncursor 06.09.2004 14:24 |
It was all good. The 90's don't really count as a decade for Queen. Only 2 CDs, both written in 1990, basically. |
KJ 06.09.2004 14:41 |
Depends on my mood, I guess 70's, 80's AND 90's since my favourite 3 albums are A night at the opera, The miracle and Innuendo. |
