Actually rock started in 1954 with Bill Haley and his comets but i know that isn't proper rock n' roll but it has been defined by many as the start of rock music, i'd say rock ended 91/92 , and i know rock hasn't ended i mean the glory days of rock 'n' roll has when rock ruled the charts
rock never ruled the charts IMO. In the 70's it was disco & MOTR-music. In the 80's it was stuff like Duran Duran, Michael Jackson etc etc. In the 90's it was dance/pop/r'n'b.
Rock will NEVER die! It will have its resurgence in many different young bands as in today's rock bands like, Blink 182, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, The Darkness, Modest Mouse, Jet and many others all over the world.
All the bands mentioned may sound different but they all classify themselves as rockers plain and simple.
Long Live Rock!!! Rap and Hip Hops days are numbered...we can only hope!
Kriz ;o)

No one music genre has really "ruled" the charts, with the exception of the pop/rap explosion here in the USA these last 5 years or so.
But during the 70's, you had your Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Who Aerosmith and Wings among others that had top ten singles and high-selling albums. And in the 80's you had Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Aerosmith (toward the end of the decade) David Bowie (not his best stuff but most commercially successful) etc...
If you don't believe me, look up the best-selling albums of all time and you'll see plenty of titles from most of the aforementioned artists.
And as far as the "rock era" ending? I don't think rock will ever die completely. We still have groups out there kickin' ass, and I think it'll always be that way. Rock did not die with John Lennon, nor did it with Kurt Cobain or Elvis Presley, or Jimi Hendrix or Freddie Mercury.
And even if new rock doesn't become popular, you'll still have the everlasting legacy of the greats; The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, etc...that'll be rediscovered by young people when they find their own music sucks ass.

CRAP.
Another classic era of rock was in the early to mid 90's.
Nirvana, Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine. A whole new bunch of rock band that produced some CLASSIC songs. I was at college when these bands were emerging and it was so exciting. Although Queen were always my number one band, I went out and brought these albums. Rock was massive at this time, along with Metallica, Extreme, GnR didnt split til 96, so I dont think you can say that it has ever 'ended'. Now there'a a LOT of good stuff out at the moment. Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Jet, to name a few. Rock is very much alive and kicking and in a very healty state I think.
As long as there are bands making rock music, the 'era' won't end. Queen's music didn't die with Freddie; it's still around today, isn't it? Just because somebody's died, or the band has broken up doesn't mean it's the death of rock music, too. Even though rap/pop/hip-hop is so popular, there's still rock bands going strong.
