'79 leather cool "rock star" look...no ugly mustache. :) That thing seemed to age him 10-20 years.... |

i once showed a female friend a picture of the Barcelona Freddie. Her immediate response was "cor - he s nice" Upon hearing that it was indeed Freddie, she was almost embarrassed by her earlier admission. |

I think Freddie looked his best in the '70's with his long hair and heavy eyeliner. Yum! |

He looked his best first thing in the morning. Iron Eagle told me. |
Pim Derks 07.07.2004 18:34 |
He probably looked at his best in one of his leather fetish costumes in some New York darkroom while asking people how big their c*ck was. Sorry, I'm reading Peter Freestone's book. I'm not amused. |

I like the Jazz era... but the best is Live Aid : the ultimate Rock God |

Freddie ALWAYS looked his best through every stage of his career, though during his last months I can't say because I never saw any pictures of him in print (thank God). A coworker of mine who was attending medical school in 1992 said she viewed a film in class about AIDS and there was a feature about Freddie Mercury. She said he had "enormous black spots -- Kaposi's Sarcoma" all over his face and that he looked "cadaverous". Has anyone heard or seen this? It's stuck in my mind all these years and I've researched medical college films but I've never come across something like this. I really would not care to view it because I've worked around endstage AIDS patients and, even though they are still alive, they're wasted away and in too much pain to imagine. Most are on morphine and sleeping away what's left of their lives. They are people, though, and they've been inspiring, so brave in the face of death, just like Freddie was. He was so amazing to have suffered so much and still functioned as a performer -- and a human being -- in those last months. I wish he hadn't succumbed to the illness -- when I see Magic Johnson (former basketball player) still alive after being HIV+ for 13-odd years, it makes me wonder...and makes me angry as well. |

My favorite was the early days look the long hair gowns makeup. Outrageous... I thought it was wierd when Freddie cut his hair short and then the mustache... well love him just the same lol |
goinback 07.07.2004 23:53 |
Even though I hated the mustache, I liked it better around the time of Wembley because his outfit seemed to be more sophisticated and matched it. But the mustache with the leather red pants and '70s style clothing didn't seem to match IMHO.... |

I didn't like the mustache at first, but then when he shaved it off for the Barcelona look, I missed it. I missed his long hair more than I minded the mustache. But the leather and vinyl clothes were better than the leotards. All in all, I think he upgraded. Lisa, I haven't seen the medical films of which you speak (and can't imagine he allowed himself to be filmed???) - weird. But I do remember seeing gossip column paparazzi photos of a very sick and wasted looking Freddie in probably 1991, which were published alongside the a report that Queen was denying rumors he had AIDS, as if to say, but draw your own conclusions, people. I remember how upset I was to see that indeed he was not long for this world and also how distressed he looked -- bundled up and obviously not wanting to be photographed, wanting to be left alone, just getting into or out of a car in a hospital parking lot. I can't be certain, but my memory is that it was in Rolling Stone; at least, I've mildly hated Rolling Stone ever since for the cruelty of publishing the damn photos, adding their little bit to the sum of human misery. A friend of mine was diagnosed with AIDS around the same time that Freddie died. A year after my friend died, there was a big report about the wonderful new drugs that helped HIV+ people live better lives for much longer (e.g. Magic Johnson), and I threw something at the television in such a fury that my friend had not lived long enough to get the good drugs, which he might have done had he not decided to take himself off of the earlier, unpleasant, difficult drugs. I identify with the anger, not that one begrudges anyone, but at the whole situation regarding this disease. |

I knew somebody that died of AIDS in 1993, He was too advanced to recieve the 'new' drugs. And I was surprised how well Holly Johnson looked on Bands Reunited. But getting back to the topic, I always likes Freddies look throughout 89/90/91 because of how ill he was and how well he conducted himself! Genius. I love the vid for Headlong, I just wish John would have done something with his hair!! |
Whatinthewhatthe? 08.07.2004 07:35 |
Ooh, John and the ever-changing hairstyles...then red/brown to grey and back to red/brown then finally grey...he really kept the fans guessing, didn't he? ;-)) |

Egret, I remember too well the tabloid pictures in NOTW and The Sun (damn those rags!). Strange but hardly any of that showed up in US tabloids like National Enquirer and The Star. I think the British ones are more brutal...look at pictures of poor Princess Di and see the deer-in-the-headlights look she had all the time. The absolute last picture of Freddie I saw was taken by telephoto lens from the ground near his home and showed Freddie standing at a window being supported by someone unseen. He looked ghastly. Thank God the picture was grainy, it would have been even more shocking in any clarity. Rolling Stone published some pictures after his death but they were far better. I think they had more respect that the slags that camped outside Garden Lodge waiting for him to die so they could get "first scoop". Who could live with themselves doing THAT for a living??? |

Eyeliner. Lot's of eyeliner. I like when guys wear makeup (*cough* Dr. Frank N. Furter- although I wouldn't EXACTLY call him sexy.) |
jericho05 08.07.2004 19:02 |
I would not have wanted to see the morbid photos of a decrepit Freddie. I understand his desire for privacy. Especially at the the time when AIDS was not even as well known as now and the disease was especially frowned upon. |

I think Freddie always looked great. Especially cute with his hair like this: link God,Superman is lucky;-) And I think he looked very handsome here: link I love looking at all his pictures, but it also makes me sad that he's no longer here:( Missing him... |
Gunpowder Gelatine 09.07.2004 05:02 |
Same with me, Frejorobri. I love looking at the pictures, but it's so sad to realize that he's not here anymore... Roger, though, looks insane in the second picture. Kind of like this one. link |
freddie4ever 09.07.2004 19:39 |
I must say i prefer his black nail polish, eyeliner look. But he wanted to make a change for himself and that's cool. (everyone succumbed to the 80's styles anyways) |
