... is that I have on my Hot Space CD the song "Under Pressure" with Fred's "It's OK!", just like how he sings in the concert, and in my computer (mp3 that I downloaded previously), another version of Under Pressure, with everything same except without that "It's OK!" part. Why are there two versions....?
The one without that vocal is a remixed version, you'll notice it also has a crisper sound and extra vocals 'People on streets' towards the end. This version is from the U.S. CD "Classic Queen" from 1992. They never identified it as a remix, but it is.
I don't think "That's okay" was left out by mistake or anything.. it's just one of the little changes made to keep the remix slightly different.
It's not a bad disc to have. Here's what it truly contains (all are full-length album versions except where noted):
A Kind Of Magic
Bohemian Rhapsody
Under Pressure (remix)
Hammer to Fall (single version)
Stone Cold Crazy
One Year of Love
I'm Going Slightly Mad
I Want It All (single version)
Tie Your Mother Down (single version)
The Miracle (very bad edit, 4:23)
These Are The Days of Our Lives
One Vision (album version shortened to 4:37 by fading in and out early)
Keep Yourself Alive
Headlong
Who Wants To Live Forever
The Show Must Go On
The edit version of 'The Miracle' is the main disappointment. It cuts a few seconds here and there, and cuts out the entire 'fast' section of the song, but then actually extends the fade-out part sorta like the video version does, which is really silly.
Had they used the single version of 'One Vision' they would have had time for the full-length 'Miracle'. It works out the same time give or take a couple seconds. But Hollywood didn't seem to have much knowledge about alternate versions of Queen songs at times. I don't think they knew about that single version of One Vision at all.
For their 'Greatest Hits' video they remastered the sound for all the videos but they didn't even have the single version of 'Fat Bottomed Girls' so they did their own edit to match the video. (It edits to a cold ending rather than fading out)
So a lot of their mistakes were from lack of information which Queen productions should have provided them with.
What's the difference in TYMD?
I used to have the cd years ago, and I've forgotten any difference in the song now... but it's worth noting it's the Queen cd I grew up on. :) The first time I heard the album version of The Miracle, I thought it was the coolest thing ever!
It's actually the same TYMD but without the album intro, so it just starts with the TYMD guitar riff after the 'staircase' ends about a minute or so into the album vesion.
Technically the intro on the album never really was part of the song.. it's gongs and the riff from White Man and then the staircase thing, but on most albums it's not a separate track.
I've heard the same edit of TYMD somewhere else too...I think it was that US K-tel "Queen Collection" compilation from the early '80s....
I have that on cassette by the way...how hard to find is that? Once in awhile I see the vinyl on E-bay....
I wouldn't call it an edit.. it's the whole actual song. The album just had the extra intro stuff which isn't based on TYMD at all. The staircase thing comes again at the end of the album, after Teo Torriatte. I've heard that there are even some versions of ADATR which separate the intro from TYMD. And the 3:44 version is the way it was released as a single.
Hollywood did one bad edit and one fade in/fade out which was due to them not having the single version of One Vision. Overall I'd say they did a good job.
EMI's Greatest Hits II in comparison featured 8 edits and fades which were done specifically for that disc, so it's the worst of the two by far.
In fact, for the Platinum Collection, Hollywood used a remastered, restored version of Hits II which eliminated some of those edits while the U.K. Platinum still has the old version.
