United States |
Deaky's Middle Nut 03.07.2004 09:13 |
US, but I would venture to guess that many Queen fans are still "in the closet", so to speak. |
Whatinthewhatthe? 03.07.2004 09:48 |
UK, most definitely. The home of the boys and the fan club...and the musical, which I hope does well in the US come September. There are plenty of US fans. They tend to come out of the woodwork for the annual conventions... |
Lord Blackadder 03.07.2004 16:28 |
Yea. U.K. Only good reason to live here. Not a day goes by without me seeing at least one Queen vid on a music channel. |
Deaky's Middle Nut 03.07.2004 16:30 |
The US would have to have more, if for no other reason, the population. Now, if you take it as a percent, the UK would have more, by far. But, as far as sheer numbers of people, the US, in my mind anyhow, would have more. |
Whatinthewhatthe? 03.07.2004 17:35 |
Let's say Europe as a whole then! Queen played more times overseas than in the US. I'm grateful for the 13 times I saw them, though I envy the lot that enjoyed them at Wembley and Knebworth! The closest I've been to a crowd that size was seeing the Stones in Memphis, TN (Mid-South Coliseum) in 1976. |
Mr Coolest Cat 04.07.2004 14:06 |
Does anyone really know the answer, i doubt it, just think of all the millions of fans the guys had in South America and Asia. |
Sonia Doris 05.07.2004 12:23 |
Anywhere you go in the world there is at least one thing related to Queen. |
Saint Jiub 05.07.2004 17:27 |
Of 67 people involved in the bootleg tree (myself included), 18 are from the UK, 13 are from the USA, and 8 are from the Netherlands ... Or in terms of continents: 18 in North and South America, 42 in Europe, and 7 in Asia, Australia and New Zealand. |
Lucifero 05.07.2004 19:18 |
i remember reading somewhere that Vatican. or was it San-Marino?... |
high-flying-adored 05.07.2004 22:15 |
Hmm. USA (of which I am one) are definitely in the closet (shame!) --- so maybe it's more obvious in Europe. It would make sense. |
FriedChicken 05.07.2004 23:10 |
I think the US has the most fans, because there are more people living in the states than in the UK. But when it comes to %, the UK wins |
frejorobri 06.07.2004 03:20 |
I would say the UK,because their albums have usually been more successful on the charts than in the US. *Thinking of moving to the UK* |
willem-jan 8923 06.07.2004 03:33 |
This is just in: USA counts officially 4,332,604 Queen fans. UK has "only" 3,806,214 Queen fans. Really, it's true...... On a more serious note: Come on people, you can go on discussing for ages, you will never ever be able to get the right answer. And by the way, I think India has quiet a lot "fans" as well. China doesn't, Queen is illegal over there. |
Sebastian 06.07.2004 06:30 |
I think it's almost sure about that - US by number, UK by percentage, though Japan or the Netherlands would be close. US has more than 300 million people. If only two percent of them were Queen fans that'd be already more than 100% of New Zealand India too would be an option. With 1% only they'd already have over ten million fans. Which is way more than in most South American countries |
Vb 06.07.2004 10:08 |
there is like 15 fans in denmark. |

No one in the southern United States will admit they listen to Queen. Down here, people are all right-wing extremists - they don't care if you're talented, they just care if you're a fag. Up in the more enlightened parts of the country it may be different. |
Mr.Jingles 06.07.2004 11:17 |
Seems to me like in the south a band that carries a racist symbol like Lynard Skynard gets far more respect than a band that has way much more talent, and has achieved way far more, but has a homosexual lead singer. |
Brianmay1975 06.07.2004 12:42 |
Well people still haven't grown up... I'm from Romania and I dare say that there aren't so many Queen fans out here, though their music is appreciated better than Led Zepp or AC/DC by most of the population. But... I've still got some unpleasant surprises, many people dislike Queen because Freddie was gay. And a month ago one of the TV channels broadcasted the WWRY Live in Montreal and there was a short introduction whose main idea was that "when most people hear the name Queen, they automatically think at homosexuality, drugs, AIDS..." Arrrgh!!! I wanted to kill them! But the nice part is that Queen is really appreciated by the older generations (e.g. my grandmother liked them a lot), because they have good music... |
Brianmay1975 06.07.2004 12:43 |
Oops, forgot to write it before: is it true that they are illegal in China? Why? |
Saint Jiub 06.07.2004 17:55 |
The south put everyone to shame for the abc contest at Breakthru 04 in Cleveland. The two finalists were from Tennessee and Alabama. After Brandon won that competition he said (and I am paraphrasing) "Never let it be said that the south doesn't like Queen." |
Mr. Scully 07.07.2004 04:16 |
USA, because of the population, of course. But when it comes to "density" or "passion", it would be UK, Japan, Germany or Holland. Maybe a bit Italy and Spain. |
The Mir@cle 07.07.2004 04:33 |
If you look at the total population and the fans, The Netherlands will be a good competitor. |
willem-jan 8923 07.07.2004 06:01 |
Brianmay1975 wrote: Oops, forgot to write it before: is it true that they are illegal in China? Why?Everything that is not from their own government is illegal in China. I guess it won't be broadcasted by the radio stations, and also internet is not allowed. So hard to listen to their music, and therewith gain fans ;) |
Sebastian 07.07.2004 06:41 |
Density is very big in the biggest cities of Japan. However, there's a very very very big part of the population (the one in villages and rural spaces) that doesn't have the slightest idea of rock music or any Western related thing |
Whatinthewhatthe? 07.07.2004 07:32 |
Netherlands, Germany and Japan are all huge Queen supporters. Japan moreso because of all the attention they paid them early in their career. The reception there was fantastic, almost like when The Beatles first appeared there at Budokan! The screaming fans, the gifts, the signs, the merchandise... Queen made an impact wherever they appeared, and that's saying a lot! |
Whatinthewhatthe? 07.07.2004 07:39 |
Geeks and Mr Jingles, you hit the nail on the head. I live in Tennessee and Queen were never really received well in this area. They only came to Tennessee twice (Memphis and Nashville), but I never minded driving to other cities to see them in concert, and few were south of my state, the majority were in the north and northeast. You should have heard the furor when the IWTBF video debuted -- so many hateful things. Most Southerners don't get British humour and that's so stereotypical. A lot back then went for Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Black Oak Arkansas and Molly Hatchet. I never liked Southern rock, it IS racist and the subject matter of the songs is usually banal. And some to this day think the Union Jack is the Confederate flag!! |

i´m from argentina... I can´t say that Argentina is the country that has more queen fans, beacuse i didnt count them, jaja, but in fact, there is a lot of fans here The best sellers bands (in argentina) are (in order of sales): 1-The Beatles 2-Queen I think that Argentina and Brazil, are the countrys with more Queen Fans in Sudamerica |
jericho05 07.07.2004 19:22 |
We have Queen fans in Canada as well the number rumoured to be several million but the exact figures are not in. |
jericho05 07.07.2004 19:29 |
Lisa I hear you... when I was in school I was condemed for loving Queen because they were a "gay disco group"... of course these were closed minded teenagers but to this day Queen are reviled in some parts because of reasons that have nothing to do with talent or music. |
Whatinthewhatthe? 10.07.2004 10:37 |
A lot of us were art students in school and Queen were new to the music scene then. We loved their originality and the fact that they were British! Even our music teacher loved them (he was in his 20s and really appreciated their music). We used to dissect songs for class from Queen II especially. Then we moved on to SHA and ANATO. It was fun learning how Freddie sang all the parts and mixed them into the classic we hear today! |

I cannot blieve I just found this topic...
Hmm, where do I start??? OK, let me begin with the arrogant, know-nothing Jingles. Lynyrd Skynyrd were a good band. No, not as good as Queen but still produced a fair amount of excellent material. A reason they may have been so popular in the south is because they were from the south, the same reason Queen were more popular in Europe than anywhere else. As for the racist symbol, I assume you mean the rebel flag. True, some racist groups have used the flag as their symbol, but it is more synonomous with the south than it is any racial overtones given to it by a few loonies. The race issue is only one aspect of the flag and one contributor of the South's attempted secession. My point is, simply carrying a Rebel flag does not constitute racism. Poor taste? yes. Racism? Most definately not.
Now for my self-hating southerner GeeksandGeeks...

Up in the more enlightened parts of the country it may be different. The only extremism I hear is coming from you. DO you realize how many people you just lumped into a group you essentially called bigots? That has to be one of, if not THE, most ignorant remark I've ever seen on QZ; And I'm considering all of Baer and Britt's posts. Not is it only a generalisation, it is obviously untrue. Erin, Pieter, Catgurl and myself are all southerners and Paul is a psuedo-southerner and we all freely admit to liking Queen. Also, I live in AL and have never recieved any negative reaction when asked what type of music I listen to. Ignorance OF the band, but not hatred towards them. Of course, the south still has its problems but to live in la la land and pretend the North is a perfect entity free of hatred and bigotry while paniting the sotuh full of lynchings and bible-thumpers is just silly. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to get my fiddle from the shop and go door-to-door telling everyone how Boston is a modern day Gomorrah. |

Yes this is true, but you can find music with no inner message and with stupid lyrics everywhere in the world. And almost everytime I said to someone that I love Queen, I've heard something nasty about his death and his sexual orientation in the same phrase, even if the one I was talking to didn't hate Queen or even liked them. And this is getting really annoying, btw... |

i think that in Holland there are also very much Queenfans, for such a little country. Queen has been the all-time number 1 in the top 100 and top 2000 with BoRap since 1975... and it wasn't the british who started the Queen fanclub at all! First of all, in Holland, BEFORE any fanclub, there was "The Dedicated Queen Followers Association". It was operated by dutch fans, who were te very first to recognise the true stars Queen were BEFORE anyone else did!!! The people running this PRE-Queenfanclub thing were: Donna Martinelli Hennie Einkotter Anja van Wijk Rosy Kanselaar This followers association existed quit long, and because they grew so fast, the Official Dutch Queen Office was launched, before Hannie and Anja took that over some 21 years ago... and 6 months later, the british started with the Official International Queen Fan Club, so the nomination in the Guiness Book Of World Records for the longest running fanclub, is....? WE, the dutch, were the first to recognise the superstars Queen were then, and still are today! It would be so nice, if these people could be traced and invited to the dutch meeting or the convention....like Vicky, Sue, Amanda...who all ran the fanclub in England before Jacky and Val took over.... Most fans do not even know the old names and faces...but the fanclubs as we know them today were started by REAL and TRUE heros!!! They actually were the initiators and gave us the fanclubs in Holland and the U.K. as we know them now for more than 2 decades! We are so lucky to have fanclubleaders who stick around and still go for it! That is one of Queen's superachievements aswell! But, to get to the point again, Holland has an awful lot of Queenfans living in it, and although not too many are registered as active fanclubmembers here, in the hearts of the people from Holland, Freddie and Queen still live on!!! |

Well, I'm 14 years old, and I live in Joppatowne, Maryland, in the United States of America. And I am a HUGE Queen fan...and I must say that at least around here, Queen is one of the most popular older groups amongst my school, and nearly all of my friends and acquaintances either have the "Greatest Hits 1-2" boxed set, love 'em or at least like Queen somewhat. We did a lip-synch project in Drama, earlier this year.....we would get up onstage and lip-synch to a song we chose.....I chose "I Feel Good" by James Brown......and one kid said, "I'm gonna do Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen!" And, sadly, I had no idea what the hell he was talking about...and then a girl in my class chose to do "Killer Queen" by Queen...I thought the only notable things they had ever done were "We Will Rock You," "We Are The Champions," "Another One Bites the Dust" and "that song Vanilla Ice ripped off." Curious, I got their greatest hits........now, I'm a Queenaholic. And nearly everyone in my school, from "preps" to "punks" to "goths" like them. Only Led Zeppelin rivals them when it comes to popularity of an older group (unless you count Nirvana, who has both beat). Also, I've seen Queen songs be in the top 5 most popular song selections on real.com's "Real Rhapsoides." There are a number of youths in this country who love them, I believe (when we were in kindergarten, it was universally thought that "We Will Rock You" was the greatest song ever). Undoubtedly, that was our first exposure. Queen has finally gotten the critical acclaim they deserve over here too; from VH1, MTV, NME, and in 2001 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Only Rolling Stone magazine remains harshly critical of the band. As time goes on, I think you'll see Queen become more and more acceptable from coast to coast in the USA |
jericho05 12.07.2004 18:33 |
Good for you! I think classic rock is enjoying a huge resurgence with the kids who are sick of all the fabricated crap. Queen with their wealth of crafty hooks and songwriting are a natural for youths to gravitate too. My son is 14 and he says a lot of the kids at school love Queen. Queen AC/DC and Zepplin among others are huge at the schools way more so then theStones or Beatles (but the kids will get them soon too!!) |
Sonia Doris 13.07.2004 08:42 |
I think when you listen to a whole Queen album, not only one or two songs on the radio, you realize you have lost your life listening to artificial music. That is what happened to me a few years ago. When I found an album I have completely forgotten about (Gratest Hits 1) and I started listening to it... That's when it started. Since then, I can't seem to stop enjoying Queen. |
Brianmay1975 13.07.2004 10:52 |
I know this feeling damn well! When I first heard ANATO I was 15 and it was a kind of magic that happened... I still can't believe that there is a band in the real world, not in my imagination, who played the music I always wanted to hear. Before I heard them, I knew nothing of music... I dare not say that in Romania there's such a big amount of Queen fans. Maybe there are some, but I dunno how to find'em... |

Maybe if the quality of the music promoted by televisions and radios would be better, perhaps there would be a lot more Queen fans. I am very pissed off by the free concerts politicians keep organizing to make themselves some publicity. Young people tend to refuze anything that has a prize (or quality). I hope it will change... and may Queen music gain more and more fans around the world. gee... that would be kinda cool... |
