And yes, that is not a mistake, Macca played Harrison's All Thing Must Pass as a tribute. Great stuff!
This is from a friend of mine who watched it.
"After the first couple of numbers I was apalled. It was like a Beatles karaoke. It was like watching a not very good tribute band. The reception was lukewarm. I was thinking jeez Macca, just let it be will yer. Once you were fab, now you're flab. Quit, not while you're ahead, but before you get even further behind.
Then he did Yesterday on his own with an acoustic guitar. The crowd sang along and loved it. The set picked up a bit after that, and I thought hang on a tick, he deserves this. He's given us some great tunes, he's been a Fab, he still touches the spot. He has become an icon and Glastonbury will be his Hall Of Fame for the young groovers of tomorrow.
Then I thought nah - his reaction was like the tired club comic frantically trying out well worn gags until he finds one the crowd will laugh at. He looked relieved. Still hiding behind his defences, but glad that no rotten tomatoes were flying.
At the end he did Hey Jude. He sang it really badly, and the band was a bit ragged. The backing vocals were exposed and sounded iffy. I swore I could hear Linda in the mix singing her one note line way out of tune. Nonetheless the crowd was still there singing along.
Then he lost it. For a minute Sir Fab thought he was doing panto at the Theatre Royal St Helens. He got the 'fellers' to do a chorus on their own, then the 'ladies', then altogether now... and I realised that the audience, by now thoroughly drenched, probably totally crusted, and who would have sung along with a ringtone, were just being nice. They were singing nah nah nah like we used to sing the hymns in school. It was becoming a little sad.
Then I thought of the footie and the rugby and about how as a nation we're living on past glories and drinking too much. We shouldn't be doing that. We have another new vibrant wave of energy and talent coming through (some of it coming from our friends from abroad). The trouble is that the senators and congressmen, (and the Maccas and all the other has-beens of yesteryear) are blocking the doorways and standing in the halls.
Someone should give him his bus pass, and if he wants to sing to us he can busk. He tried that once before on Broad Street and didn't do very well."
I have to agree from the TV footage it was abysmal.
Both of us are scousers and Beatles fans from way back . Macca should step down and let us remember the days when we (he) was fab.
Neil
Cheers! That is one long setlist. But i disagree that he is not good anymore. The parts i saw on BBC he was pretty good. And i know you will say watching it isnt the same as being there but he sounded good. If people are still going to pay to see you and you still wanna perform, then do it. That's what i say...
Man, he's going for some pre-Fab music, isn't he? Neat!
Sir Macca still rocks after all these years...after all, he was the "commercial" Beatle! 62 years old now and still drawing thousands. If only he'd play the US more often! (I guess the role of new dad is wearing him down a bit, eh?)
I've never heard such a bad review about Macca. I'm not really a fan, but the last 2-3 concerts I've seen televised have been really good. The bit about Hey Jude above being sung badly? What were you listening to?? He was sounding great. The above review sounds more like someone in a bad mood! PM was really cool from what I saw.
Peace,
Adam.
I saw him just a couple weeks ago and - although I'm NOT a Beatles fan at all - I loved the concert. On the other hand, many of his fans liked how "it sounds exactly like on the record". And that's what I don't like. If it sounds like on the record, then I can listen to the CD/DVD and I don't need to attend a gig.
The fireworks in Live And Let Die were amazing :-)
Which songs were broadcasted from Glastonbury? I assume they didn't show the whole concert.
I saw Macca on the 17th of June in Helsinki and it was great! Too bad we have the "midnight sun" here in the summer so the fireworks didn't show so well. It was like a daylight concert although the show started at 8.15 pm..
Paul McCartney is, and always will be, a treasure. Hey Jude still never fails to stir me. Plus, he has the greatest last name ever! (just indulge me, Paul and I have the same last name! )
God, you guys are SOOOOO lucky!! Macca hardly ever comes to the US anymore, and he never comes near my neck of the woods (Nashville). The country music thing is such a CURSE!!!
The broadcasted (live)
Drive my car
Penny Lane
Get back
Band on the run
Back in the USSR
Live and let die
(then they showed some other acts) Then...
Yesterday
Let it be
I saw her standing there
Helter Skelter
Sgt. Pepper/The end
Then more acts for about an hour before closing the show on Hey Jude
