I was at my gf's house the other day checking the latest edition of Rolling Stone that her sis gets in the mail. I read this article with Robert Smith (The Cure) about their latest work. He was asked about the Darkness and he said that he thought they were terrible because they're "trying to re-invent something that has already been done" (That I agree with). The bad part was when he said that he hated that kind of music and he said that he didn't like Queen at all and he thought they were an awful band. I was thinking of buying the Greatest Hits album from 'The Cure' since I have to admit they have a couple of great songs. Now I guess that I have no other choice but downloading it. |

Reinvent what? They're just playing a kind of music they like. Fair enough if you don't like it, but it doesn't make it a bad thing. There was a discussion on the radio sometime this week where they were talking about the new bands. They made the point that over the last umpteen years there has been a lot of fixed tempo music and few real bands. The point was that the upcoming generation hearing bands like Coldplay, Darkness, Muse, etc. is a new sound to a lot of them. And that's why it's taken off so well over the last few years. I think it won't be long before we return to something more, dare I say it, prog rock. Exciting prospect. Peace, Adam. |

Prog rock? Sounds sexy. *hopes for another Keep Yourself Alive-esque debut* |
geeksandgeeks 25.06.2004 11:16 |
He's in the minority. Most respectable musicians love Queen. |
SusieJ 25.06.2004 12:14 |
What's the big deal? So what if Robert Smith thinks Queen are crap? The Cure are one of my all time fav's (listening to them as we speak). He has a right to his opinion. Freddie hated AC/DC... another one of my fav's. I'm not going to stop listening/buying Queen stuff because Freddie hated AC/DC. Go with what *you* like.... who gives a shit what others think. |
akan 25.06.2004 13:31 |
queen are on one side and the cure are on the other side, queen music grew up with one musical thinking and cure music grew up with another musical thinking so it's easy that cure don't like queen music |
SusieJ 25.06.2004 13:49 |
Who says? Yeah they are two different genre's of music... that doesn't mean anything. People are allowed to appreciate different types of music, from different eras.... as well, they are allowed to not like music from different types of genres. Speaking of which... Robert Smith is on the Basement Jaxx album... doing vocals for a song. Basement Jaxx and The Cure a totally different types of music.... yet, I'm sure he appreciates them. |
hamsters 25.06.2004 14:08 |
hmm considering the woman who absolutely made my life miserable for two years (the third comin g up in september) is a crazy mad cure fan Ill gladly take any oppurtunity to gripe about them...never been to keen on them but whatever. damn you Dr.Fields and your freakishly insane history and public speaking assignments! *shakes her fist* |
FreddiesGhettoTrench 25.06.2004 14:25 |
Even Roger Waters likes Queen, and he hates everyone! |
SusieJ 25.06.2004 16:02 |
The Cure are happy... happy Robert Smith. It's The Smiths are the one's that make you want to kill yourself. |
jasen101 25.06.2004 16:03 |
Robert Smith is a jealous fat boy with a bad taste in make-up. To dis a band like Queen by saying their music is lame is plain out ignorant. Oh well, the cure will be forgotten in a hundred years and Queen will still be around. It's funny how it was in Rolling Stone. That magazine has had an anti-queen agenda since Queen came out. |
Simmer 25.06.2004 16:04 |
I never liked the Cure so I don't mind. |
Krizzy 25.06.2004 16:16 |
Robert Smith is one jealous little bitch |

I hate Robert Smith's makeup. I know that has nothing to do with the music, but I wish he'd not wear it how he does. |

I saw that too!! I just didn't feel like making a post. ;) But what an asshole thing for him to say... ew. And comparing The Darkness to Queen, while there are SLIGHT simliarities, is like comparing apples to oranges (that was such a bad comparison... you all know what I mean). >:( |

am i odd for saying that the smiths make me smiley and not want to commit suicide? In fact i think depressing things make me undepressed... school, however, is a good reason to get depressed. |

It's like asking the question "Who is more remembered, Queen or The Cure?"... ...no question! :-) I only remember The Cure as an 80s band, nothing really noteworthy. If you asked me who Split Enz were, I would tell you they were a really tight band musically but unfortunately never became what they should have. Queen surpassed them all and they have the right to be remembered daily! Robert may be more than a little green-eyed with envy over Queen and Freddie's success, but crying over milk that was spilt years ago is a little stale, don't you think? And I adore The Darkness. I saw them live in Nashville a few weeks ago and thought they were lovely. I really enjoyed myself at their show. Very high-energy and fun, like an early Queen concert. And people of all ages were there too -- that should tell you something! |
redspecial85 25.06.2004 20:09 |
Yeah...I was pretty suprised myself. That must've taken a lot of balls for some synthesizer-dependant prick to insult Queen! Queen has set sales records, stadium attendance records, and are inducted members of the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. What can the Cure say that they could've done better than Queen as musicians of their craft? Even the concept of trying to compare two bands is retarded. Especially those idiots that try to compare Queen to Zeppelin, and it would be even more difficult I listen to a variety of different music, Procol Harum, Queen, The Band, AC-DC, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Judas Priest, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Roy Buchanan, and so on. Granted he does have the right to his own opinion, but one thing he fails to recognize is that the press is going to be watching him and his band. It would've been O.K. for him to just say that he's not a fan of their music...but he had to step out on a limb and say that he/she whatever it is say that it thought Queen sucked. Well...let's just wait and see what happens to their record sales... |
Virtuoso 25.06.2004 20:27 |
To call Queen an 'awful' band is just wrong.I mean, yes everybody's intitled to their own opinion, but the fact is that a group like Queen deserves to be respected.I dislike the Rolling Stones, doesn't mean that they suck,'cause I respect they achievements. |
FreDRicca_MeRcUrY 25.06.2004 21:10 |
the cure anyways so whatever... |

Mr.Jingles 26.06.2004 10:52 |
As well as Robert Smith is entitled to his opinion, in the same way we are entitled to oposse to him. And what better way than by downloading songs by 'The Cure'. All I can say is that Robert Smith is jealous of the sucess that Queen had, and he's still pissed because by a far far shot Queen achieved a lot more than 'The Cure'. Besides, 'The Cure' was way too overshadowed by Depeche Mode all the way through the 80s. So they weren't even the best on that kind of genre. |
Lord Blackadder 27.06.2004 09:24 |
Yea but hasnt anyone noticed that The Cure are crap? And what music do they play? What is it called? Apart from crap? |

Let Robert Smith why don't we chear him up with buying a the DVD The greatest hits? We know Queen is great I just can't understand you have a problem with that. My Tip to Mr.Jingles: Search yourself a fine hobby or a fine girl-friend, and think about thinks who really matters, goodnight. (Sorry I'm sutch a bitch, but I'm loving it)Seems to me like you love being a bitch... have you ever considered stop being one? Perhaps you should stop listening too much 'The Cure' because as I can see that's what's making you too much of a bitch. If you do so, I promise to stop watching 'The Green Mile'. And yes, FYI I have a hobbies and a girlfriend. Just ask Mex or Mandy (geeks). So I guess the one who has a lonley and pathetic life is you then. |
Into La Ment 30.06.2004 20:27 |
Oh... this is so pathetic. Is it really that hard to comprehend that someone may just not like Queen? They don't necessarily have to be jealous of their success. He also likes groups such as The Beatles, who were even more commercially successful than Queen ever were. So... Robert Smith doesn't like their music. Big deal. I still love The Cure. On a par with Queen, in my eyes. Still, his musical taste is totally independent of my liking of his group. It should have no repurcussions on whether you purchase a CD or not- that's just petty. Yeah, I'm sure Robert Smith will be absolutely devastated that one person hasn't purchased his Greatest Hits CD. To lose respect for someone due to the fact you disagree on one little issue...? *sigh* Oh... and no Queen fan has the right to make fun of anyones hair or make up! I just happen to be randomly watching a Cure video at the moment (as you do), and Robert, of course, looks damn hot. So :op *rant over* I'm sorry if I got all evil there, I just don't like people bitchin' about Fat Bob... and Queen fans are so damn good at bitchin' Do buy the CD, though... |

I don't think Robert Smith has realized that he's too old and fat to still be wearing make-up and dressing up like a skinny 80s goth. |
Óli Gneisti Sóleyjarson 01.07.2004 18:05 |
The exact quote from Robert Smith is: "Well, I never liked Queen. I can honestly say I hated Queen and everything that they did. To have that rehashed and reheated for a second time around is pretty weird. So, no, I don´t like The Darkness at all. I think they're a comedy band." It's just plain silly, he's just trying to annoy ppl by saying he hated everything that Queen did. By saying that The Darkness is exactly like Queen is just dumb, I like The Darkness but their style very different from Queen. Smith obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. I don't mind him disliking Queen or The Darkness, I don't mind him talking about his dislike but he's just comes of as a silly old fart. |
Óli Gneisti Sóleyjarson 01.07.2004 18:37 |
Robert Smith talking about Live Aid taken from link "It's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen on television: Freddie Mercury was ok, but Bob Dylan, Keith Richards and Ron Wood took the cake, they were so terrible! It was humiliating in the extreme, it was that bad." So he didn't hate Queen at Live Aid so he was just talking out of his arse when he said he hated everything that Queen had ever done. |

'I don't think Robert Smith has realized that he's too old and fat to still be wearing make-up and dressing up like a skinny 80s goth.' You took the words right out of my mouth. He was on telly recently and was a complete shambles. He made The Stones look youthful! |

Mr. Jingles: Is that a real Roger Waters quote? Haha! Apparently Brian really liked AC/DC because I have a picture of Brian with an AC/DC shirt...I wonder if they fought a lot about what bands were good/bad.... |
Mr.Jingles 01.07.2004 21:23 |
Yes, that's a real quote from Roger Waters. I don't know when he said it, but I found it once at a Pink Floyd website. |

Gunpowder Gelatine 02.07.2004 13:26 |
He's allowed to have his own opinion, even though I don't agree with it. You can't like every band, although dismissing everything Queen did isn't the smartest thing to do. |
