Hi, I guess you already know the situation about this beloved site of ours. I hope the finances don't go so low that QueenZone.com will cease to exist. If you want to know what I mean click the Queenzone.com Needs Your Help! link above the main menu. |
Daburcor? 02.06.2004 14:19 |
I saw that last night (early this morning). As soon as I have some spare cash, I intend to cough it up. |
geeksandgeeks 02.06.2004 15:32 |
*groan* I would really like to help out, but I have no credit account and hardly any extra money! The largest donation I could make right now would be about a buck thirty nine. |
inu-liger 02.06.2004 17:24 |
Wasn't it *I* who suggested the PayPal donations in the first place when we were making suggestions for revamping this site?? Too bad my idea has to be realized at the worst time. I would love to donate, but unfortunately the only money I am receiving in a while is mostly being put away and also being used to pay eBay debts |

I dont understand.. how things to run a site can cost so much in GB.. In Finland to have the bandwidth U need.. like 1 MBit/s costs only some 40 € in a month. and the server PC U got.. ok it might cost some 1000 € once U buy it.. but after that the only cost is to replace broken Hard drives.. which is some 100 € per every 5-6 yrs? U should move your site here.. I know england is expensive country to live.. but to host one damn site.. U could cut all Ur costs if U could move the server here.. actually.. I have 10 MBit/S connection now.. with some restrictions.. I could work as node for anything.. Is there any sence there?? what I wrote.. |

The bandwidth of your connection and the bandwidth of traffic consumed by a popular website aren't exactly the same thing. If you'd run this site in Finland, you'd have to pay just the same (heck even more). Register a domain, that costs, get some nice hosting package that for example has 15gb monthly traffic limit, then pay 2.44 euro for each additional GB/month, that would be 45gb in this site's case, costing 2.44e/gb = 109.8euro, of course to get space for the 1gb of data on the domain server you'd pay around 50 extra/month... after all this and more investments (the server) it isn't too cheap. link And if you'd turn your private ADSL or cable connected pc into a server (something most ISP's stricly have banned here)I'm sure they'd quickly put a stop to it, considering the amount of traffic it would cause at your end. |

Let Brian and Roger donate some money for this website. They're millionaire and this site advertising for them. |
Farlander 03.06.2004 02:35 |
The experience would have to be a lot better before I would actually give any money to support it. For starters, get a moderator to clear away the spam and ban the jackasses who put it all there in the first place. |
Mr. Scully 03.06.2004 03:32 |
I think the price ($175 or whatever) is silly. I'm paying $3 per month for: - 1 GB of storage - 15 GB of bandwith 2 GB of storage and 40 GB of traffic per month cost $7 per month here. They don't support ASP though. (link |
YourValentine 03.06.2004 04:39 |
I don't think Richard wants to move the website to Finland or the Czech Republic. I also think it's more than unlikely that Brian and Roger support a fan website, they don't even support the fan club. Nobody needs to send money, it's completely voluntary, the website will still be free for everybody. People can still exercise their right of free speech, they can diss the notice board and call it a "bad experience" without being censored. If 500 people send 5$, it would be enough to run the website for a year. The idea of "donation" is to help and not to buy a service. |

I think Martin has a point there... I wouldn't ask for donations to my site's visitors, I'd rather find a way I can 1) spend less or 2) find some sponsors. If I wanna spend less, the internet hosting provider is excellent and it is proved by Queenconcerts.com, I often browse it and it's always fast and reliable. 7$ a month make 84$ a year, which is half of the curren wage for a month. If I wanna get some money from sponsors...well, Queenzone is for sure one of the most well known Queen site on the whole net, and this is really an advantage. I see far less important sites having sponsor's banners on the homepage. I'd just need the money necessary to run the site, so even an internet service provider would fit the request; he could pay the banner by giving space and bandwidth. I'm sure we all are grateful towards Richard, his long term work is really appreciated and he built a great community here, but I think it's always quite dangerous talking (and requesting) money... this is just my thought. cheeeeers! |
Mr. Scully 03.06.2004 05:50 |
I don't think any "sponsorship" is possible, I personally think that IF you want to ask money for a website (which I considered too some years ago but then decided it was not a good idea at all), it should be done via affiliate links to amazon, eil or other sites. Or searching for cheaper services is definitely a much better way. "If 500 people send 5$, it would be enough to run the website for a year" If 500 people sent $5, it could keep Queenzone alive for 50 years. On the right web hosting server. As long as the hosting is so expensive, it's just a waste of money, really. |

While I know nothing much about this stuff, I agree with Hangman that it's time to cut some things out before asking for cash. I'm sorry, but I think the torrents need to go. When I read how much they cost, I could hardly believe it. I have loved the torrents. But I'd still be happy here without them. And maybe we should all be trying to host things every now and then, instead of the weight being firmly on Queenzone. Peace, Adam. |

Pim Derks 03.06.2004 09:07 |
I only visit QZ for the forum (in fact, my bookmark links directly to link <-- yeah, the old one... I still use it :)) so I don't even consider paying for it... As said above, drop the torrents if they cost $1000 :| |
YourValentine 03.06.2004 09:08 |
Well, I don't know about prices in Australia. From what Pete says, it's apparently not unusual to pay that much for bandwidth and disk space. I am sure Richard has not thrown his money out of the window for nothing the last eight or nine years. If you consider it a waste of money, Martin, just ignore the request. I know that money is always a tricky subject but you really don't have to pay anything. People are used to get websites for free and it should stay that way. Many websites ask for donations to make ends meet, mainly when free software or other free goods are offered. A paypal icon on a website is nothing immoral when we consider that you can ignore it and that in real life we have to pay for everything. About saving the costs for the BitTorrent server- that's probably an option but then sharing with the public needs some organisation. When I think of recent answers to fan requests I have a feeling that sharing is not everybody's favourite pastime - to say the least. Again it's the decision of the people who help out if they want to spend their money on keeping the BitTorrent server. I can only speak for myself but I take Richard's request as it is and I am not going to tell him what he can do instead of asking. |

Can we not talk one of the many queen tribute bands to do a fundraiser, after they are making cash on the backs of queen, lets see them put something back. Just a thought!! Stevie |

Sounds like a grand idea! |

I have donated to Queenzone when Mr. Eggy needed money for the Hub and I'll be happy to donate just as soon as I change banks on my paypal account. Now Richard why can't a formal plea be drafted to QOL since almost all their gossip comes from this page by way of a link I would hope they (BM & RMT et al) would realize the value of QZ and try their best to save it. You might want to try to contact JenX from BrianMay.com to assist you in your approach. I cannot see them leaving you hung out to dry. And if they do you should let all of us know so we can take our own action as to whether we wish to have anything to do with QOL in the future! Just a thought dear! You are the best, Richard, I have really felt at home here and would hate to see it gone. Love, Kriz ;o) |

Richard I hope you sort things out with this site. It's the best website on Queen that I know. With the forum I have found out things about Queen that I never knew before e.g New Queen Album. Thanks for giving us this excellent site. |
inu-liger 03.06.2004 17:27 |
Well dont buy if you cant pay!!!!It's not a question of being able to pay or not, the question is how much will be left in the budget once I've used the $500 check to pay off eBay and other things :P |
Mr. Scully 04.06.2004 03:00 |
Sorry, I still don't get it. This is just a site like many others. Internet is global, the only right solution is finding a cheaper service, that's all. Or stopping things like BitTorrent. Asking for money before trying to find a solution is simply not right. I'm sorry that Richard has to pay so much money to keep Queenzone alive but I insist that it's not necessary at all. |
Adam Baboolal 04.06.2004 07:03 |
Yeah, Barry's right about the torrent upload there. I totally forgot about that! Definitely worth doing considering they began to appear on there anyway! Time to shutdown whatever is used for the torrents |
Penetration_Guru 04.06.2004 13:32 |
Perhaps those of you who feel unable to stop contributing to some of the more obvious shite on the Personal Section would like to think about the effect that you're having. |

inu-liger 05.06.2004 18:56 |
"How about the person with the Highest donation can pick which people can be banned? =-)" That would not be fair. Some of us don't have jobs (including myself), and some of us don't even have PayPal (not including myself). |

There's too many silly and costly things in use which I don't support, such as the torrents and having dual message boards, so I can't find it in my heart to support Queenzone at the moment. I recommend having an Amazon (or a decent retailer of choice) store. I've seen the 'store' link at the top on occasion when things go haywire around here, so I know it's been considerred and/or tested. If that's not enough to cover costs, I'd sell banner ads or maybe close the place down. |

How about arranging a sponsored silence for Charles Baer? Or better still a sponsored pistol-whip? I'd love to help, I really would. But things are rather tight at the Towers just recently. What with the new swimming pool and having a second tennis court built. And those Ferraris ain't cheap, y'know. |
