Lately I've seen Priscilla, Queen of the Desert labelled either as "cult" or "gay/lesbian," and this bothers me a bit.
I don't think I'm the only one who considers this film a comedic drama; although there are humorous parts, it clearly deals with many different serious topics. (outcasts, homophobia, how the aborigines are treated by the australians and the similar mistreatment of the three main characters, gender identity, children, marriage, etc.)
I feel that people are trying to label the film as a "campy" comedy -- the only things heavily quoted or referenced from it are the three dance sequences, and those are actually a very small part of the entire movie. And when people talk about the movie, it would seemingly lack the very real content it has.
Anyone else feel peeved about this?
