Today I received the Japanese Queen Jewels DVD.
This has a new videoclip of the MIH version of I Was Born To Love You. Great clip, very well mixed video footage and.... unseen footage of Freddie's original IWBTLY clip. Just great. On my site I have uploaded just a fragment of this clip. (I am not giving it all away!)
That's cool. I meant to order this but forgot about it when I did my card sleeves order. Maybe next month :)
I was curious.. are the videos in their original full-frame ratio? And from what I can tell by the badly translated comments at HMV, it doesn't have 5.1?
They're also releasing Greatest Karaoke Flix in July, which is long overdue on DVD and will probably have IWBTLY as a bonus just like it will be on the new version of Karaoke Hits the same day.
The karaoke option could have been available on the Video Hits discs if they'd done things right. A simple matter of an extra audio track and subtitles for lyrics.
Oh yeah, please tell us also, if it says whether it's region-free. I have a multiregion player but I'm sure many others don't. Fortunately Japan is NTSC like us so that's not a problem.
Is there a Region Coding on this DVD? Since it's from Japan, is it correct to assume it's NTSC?
edit- El Buggerino posted the same question. Only one response is necessary. Extra points if it's directed at me, though.
LOL @ Zeni
PS - I see now that it seems to be full-frame, which is good :)
The video clip seems to be pretty much what I expected. Not bad, but the typical existing video with bits of the band from concerts inserted.
the sleeve notes on this dvd say:
all videos restored and presented in 16:9 widescreen.
(So I just looked at Bohemian Rhapsody and it's the same as on the Queen Greatest Videohits DVD)
The region code is 2 - NTSC
Sound is STEREO.
Banquo told us in the "convention" thread that the new "Born To Love You" video clip will be on Greatest Video Hits 3. If the only reason to buy "Jewels" is this particular video clip, you can just as well wait for GVH3.
Oh, now I see. they've screwed with the ratio again for IWBTLY. Your clip is squeezed so it appears to be full-frame but I stretched it out and it looks like they did the old 'windowbox' thing. Oh well. I don't think I'll bother getting this after all. Just another botched Queen Production.
Well, to be fair, Simon Lupton only had 1 day to edit the IWBTLY video, and at least he cramed some previously unseen outtake stuff. Brian mentioned on his soapbox that the video would be worked on more later, so I presume GVH3 will feature the 'finished' version with 5.1 sound :-)
All the old clips are taken from the GVH1 DVD, and TMLWKY, TSMGO and IGSM video are in their original ratio but with two black lines either side. They don't appear 'remastered' as such.
I'll say it again - send me the original videos and I'll match the new vid, edit for edit in full 4:3 ratio (aka fullscreen). Then I'll post it for all to enjoy. I might even add some kind of 5.1 sound to at least offer a surround experience. Any offers?
Peace,
Adam.
P.S. Obviously I can't do the same with the new footage!
I got my copy from Amazon Japan and it was £28.09 delivered. I am not overly impressed with the new video, but like they say, it was done in just a day.;-)
I have put a copy of the sleeve here, in case anyone wants to see it: link
