ON vh1 uk they have had a top 100 greatest artists ever, and out band finished third. Not at all bad really. Elvis was number 1. John Lennon number 2. Queen number 3. Madonna 4th. Paul Mcartney 5th. Michael Jackson 6th. David Bowie 7th. Robbie Williams 8th. and i can't remember who was 9th and tenth. Elton was one of them. So you guys might aswell name your top 10 or 5. |
Lord Blackadder 05.05.2004 12:14 |
that should say our not out* |
pma 05.05.2004 12:24 |
100 greatest artists?? Everyone else listed above in the top 10 is listed as a solo artist (Lennon, McCartney..no Beatles) and Queen is a band...confusing poll result. oh wait, Queen was that guy with a moustache who died of AIDS. I forgot. My bad. Engelbert Humperdinck is my all time fave. Followed by Elton John and Ivor Biggun, not too far behind. |
Bohardy 05.05.2004 12:26 |
That makes no sense. Artist? Surely that implies an individual rather than a group, which is what the glaringly obvious omission of The Beatles seems to also suggest. Also Queen is the only group in the top 10 anyway. Was this list compiled by one of those anuses who thinks Freddie was Queen? |
Bohardy 05.05.2004 12:27 |
LOL. Great minds think alike PMA. |

ONLY IN TH UK where ROCK still thrives!!! |
Lord Blackadder 05.05.2004 17:15 |
actually i think it's because they never show any beatles videos because there isnt any (exept stuff from the rooftop). but apart from that it is coincidence that Queen is the only group. I can asure you that VH1 uk know that Queen wasnt just freddie. They have a Queen day at least every year. |
rhapsody__87 05.05.2004 17:20 |
If only VH1 in the US could have a list like that... I'd throw a two week party. :-( |
Daburcor? 05.05.2004 17:24 |
"If only VH1 in the US could have a list like that... I'd throw a two week party. :-(" I know what you mean. Instead, We get 'The Best Week Ever'... :/ |
rhapsody__87 05.05.2004 17:35 |
'The Best Week Ever' is utter crap. Give me 'I Love the 80s' any day! Or at least some BTM that is not on: a) Beyonce b) Britney Spears c) TLC Come ON. I want my Queen VH1 Legends on again... those were quality shows. I also want to see AIDS: A Pop Culture History again. I watched that one probably 7 times and I thought it was intense and powerful. |
Daburcor? 05.05.2004 17:40 |
I loved Queen: Legends! I taped it way back when, and watch it every once in a while. I wish it would come on again, So I can re-tape it. I missed part of it when I taped it. :/ |
dragonzflame 06.05.2004 21:48 |
hehe, poodle_permed, that's cute. |
goinback 07.05.2004 11:42 |
I'm glad someone finally realized Madonna is a better artist than Paul McCartney or David Bowie! (Just kidding of course ;) |
Into La Ment 08.05.2004 17:43 |
hehe, poodle_permed, that's cute.Yeah, my nan's a total sweetie. Always does things like that, bless her. And she thinks Queen are pretty good, too (even if she does know nothing about them!) Saying that, my 13-year-old brother once sang an impromptu one-man version of Bohemian Rhapsody to her (I honestly can't remember why, though it did sound very interesting/ amusing) and once he had finished she said: "Wow... How did you remember all those songs!" |
TheMiracle 09.05.2004 00:06 |
I hear you rhapsody. I would be joyous if the U.S. actually liked Queen still and looked past the fact that they were a, "gay band." I used to think VH1 was pretty good, but now all they've got is Stuff on Aaliyah, TLC, P.Diddy. Basically rich people that i'm jealous of. Anybody watch the FUSE channel? I have to say thats a great music channel, at least for my tastes. |
Mr.Jingles 09.05.2004 10:39 |
Elvis is #1?? For God's sake. How long would it take for people to realize that Elvis was a fabricated act. He didn't have the best voice, he couldn't write his own songs, he could hardly play the guitar. So pretty much all the attention he received was based on his looks, and moves. It's sad that for 50 years we've been calling 'The King Of Rock N' Roll' to a man who had just about as much talent as any member of a media puppet boy band. And the worst part of all... NO BEATLES!! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!! |
rhapsody__87 09.05.2004 10:41 |
So then you can truly say that The Beatles were the kings of rock since Elvis sure isn't! I never realized all those things until you just brought it up, Mr.Jingles! |

Lord Blackadder 10.05.2004 11:57 |
Ye, except that Freddie did have the best voice and he could write his own songs... |
suckerpunch 12.05.2004 20:56 |
hmm weird pole.....dont know what it whas based on Queen were apparently the only group, no zep, stones, etc.. Elvis is an interesting one... he couldnt write true or didnt whos to say. Yet the guy could sing give him that, your try & sing Suspicious Minds like Elvis or Jailhouse Rock... you cant... its like try & copy Freddie Crazy Little Thing .. you cant |

I love how people just don't realize what Elvis did for Music. Look how many artists were influenced by him. Just to name a few - The Beatles, Zeppelin, Hendrix and oh yeah QUEEN!!! I'm sorry but based on that I would call him the King of Rock and Roll!! |
Mr.Jingles 13.05.2004 00:07 |
Liquid Scream wrote: I love how people just don't realize what Elvis did for Music.Or you mean, what music did for Elvis? Elvis was lucky enough to have great looks, and perhaps his only true talent was to be a good performer. But putting them on the same league as The Beatles, Queen, Led Zep, or Floyd is complete bollocks. It's sad that most people think that Elvis invented rock n' roll when he couldn't write a freakin' tune. Meanwhile Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Haley, and all the TRUE pioneers of rock n' roll are pretty much forgotten compared to Elvis. |
suckerpunch 13.05.2004 05:11 |
hmm as john lennon said before elvis there was nothing. ask yourself what is rock'n'roll? .... its a fusion of country, gospel & rhythm & blues or it stemmed from it, like it or not Elvis brought the black mans music to the white audience. whilst i agree people like chuck berry, little richard, larry williams, carl perkins, buddy holly, ray charles etc... deserve more credit on song-writing terms... they couldnt sing like elvis.. it wasnt so much what elvis did.. its how he did it. any listen to arthur crudups "thats alright" "my baby left me" are examples. plus he had great songwriters doing stuff for him "leiber-stoller" "pomus-schuman" "otis blackwell" to mention a few. people are often too quick when they think of elvis as the overweight drug-ridden person he became in the latter years. not the guy he was on the 68 comeback special or those early vegas concerts in 69-70... check out the "elvis the way it is" dvd for tracks like "patch it up" "just pretend" "cant stop loving you" "polk salad annie" "one night" youd be surprised |
Lord Blackadder 13.05.2004 11:04 |
Ok. You guys are under the wrong impression. That was the top 10 only. I saw it from about number 13 down and i can't remember the lot. Abba was in it though (the top 13 I mean) can't remember where exactly. As were Oasis |
Liquid Scream 13.05.2004 13:56 |
Mr. Jingles - What I mean about what Elvis did for music is by influencing many of our favorite artists to pick up an instrument, sing etc. I highly doubt music would have shaped up the way it did without him. I give all those Rock and Roll pioneers you mentioned their due, but compared to Elvis' body of work they couldn't even carry his jock strap! Like Suckerpunch pointed out, John Lennon saying "Before Elvis, there was nothing!" When you buy a Beatles album or hear Lennon song on the radio you can thank Elvis Presley. For that I call him The King of Rock and Roll! |
Mr.Jingles 13.05.2004 15:29 |
Billy Haley's song 'Rock Around The Clock' came out in 1954, and was perhaps the first rock n' roll hit song ever. Even John Lennon can be wrong sometimes. |
suckerpunch 13.05.2004 19:27 |
Alan freed .. was the 1st to use the term rock & roll in 1951 .. to avoid the stigma attached to R&B and so called race music, he opened the door to white acceptance of black music, eschewing white cover versions in favor of the R&B originals. well you could split hairs all night.... bill haley recorded "rock around the clock" april 1954, elvis recorded "thats alright" around july 1954.. haley didnt chart till till oct 55 with "rock around the clock", hed already charted with joe turners "shake rattle & roll" in dec 1954 (uk dates) and thats my point presley was singing the black mans music .. Too often the study of rock begins with Bill Haley and His Comets with the blues and rhythm records that he, and others, used as a model. A musical genre does not simply appear, it gradually evolves to a point in time when some event-performance, publication, or recording allows listeners to perceive its unique qualities and apply a label. Wyonnie Harris' 1947 recording of "Good Rocking Tonight" was one of many "rhythm records" made during the late 1940s, however when it was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1954 it seemed like a new and different approach. What made it seem new and different was its context. Without exploring the history of black popular music, country and western music, race relations, technical developments, and the music business one can be led easily to the conclusion that rock and roll was some new and different music which appeared suddenly. yes im a sad.... rock'n'roll anorak...but hey FRIED CHICKEN!! |
