Do you like Queen from the 70's, 80's, 90's (I know there wasn't much from the 90's), or now, when Queen is Brian and Roger? |
Into La Ment 22.04.2004 18:58 |
I'd definitely say I preferred their material from the '70s. Before the synths kicked in, etc. I do also like their 80s stuff onwards, and I know its cliche now, with any band, to say "I prefer their earlier material" but this honestly is the case. Plus, IMO the Queen lads were really cute in the 70s, too *feels shallow* Not that that's really important of course. As for "Queen" now... no comment. |
rhapsody__87 22.04.2004 19:52 |
Yes in the 70s, Roger was just PRETTY. When he got that scary 80s hair... um... yes moving on SO the era of Queen I liked best was from 77-79 in terms of live shows. In terms of material? 74-76 was just awesome. :-) |
Gunpowder Gelatine 22.04.2004 20:11 |
Have to add that yes, Roger was pretty! ;) John didn't fare so well with the long hair, though. |
rhapsody__87 22.04.2004 20:19 |
John's long hair was awful but the 'fro was pretty damn cool. Seriously. It's so unexpected and floofy haha |

Well, there is also the 60's era (at least Doin' Alright and Polar Bear were written in the 60's) and 00's era (thanks to 46664, Jubilee show, Pepsi ad and other events). To make this more interesting, let's make some more eras. The Very Early Era (up to '73) Over The Top Era ('74-76) Late 70's Era ('77-'79 including some songs from The Game) Synths Overdoze Era ('80-'82) Euro Pop Era ('84-'86) Collective Era ('89-'91) After-life Era ('24.11.91-'97) (MIH songs written in the 80's belong to this cathegory as well, OK?) Brian & Roger (plus Guests) Era (up to today) Using this categorisation, I'd say 'Over The Top Era'. The music's just great and the costumes they were wearing back then... Takes my breath away! |
Daburcor? 22.04.2004 20:44 |
Somewhere between 1970ish and 1993ish. ;D *actually, The 90's stuff is my favorite. ;p |
Gunpowder Gelatine 22.04.2004 20:58 |
I was counting present day Queen (Brian, Roger, and whoever else they've decided to play with) as 00's. But I think I would have to agree with the new categories, and with the Over The Top Era being the best, in my opinion. |

I must say I like "The Works"-era pretty much - coz that´s the era i noticed them for the very first time - and have immediately been strucked down... |

The "Collective Era" was definitely their best. I on't really know how to explain it, but all the other eras seem like ancient hostory for me, but 1989-91 is almost the same time in what I have lived in. Also most of the best songs and videos come from this "new" era. |
Fenderek 23.04.2004 04:41 |
1970-1980 Than I really, really can't stand most of the stuff from 1982-86 and than back to good form again... And Queen for me doesn't exist after 1991, with an exception for MIH and NOBY... |
Pim Derks 23.04.2004 05:10 |
"Also most of the best songs and videos come from this "new" era." Absolutely not true. You may think these were the best songs, but tracks like Somebody To Love, Bohemian Rhapsody and Killer Queen are way better than Breakthru or The Invisible Man. Video wise you're right - in the eighties special fx came up and they were able to do stuff they couldn't do in their 70's videos. |
Farlander 23.04.2004 05:43 |
I think the best "era" was from Queen II up to and including Hot Space. Before and after that was still good, but not quite as good. Within that time period, I feel the early to mid 70's had the best studio work and the late 70's and early 80's had the best live work. |

The Greatest Hits Era, greatest albums: Queen II, SHA (My Favorite) ANATO,ADATR,NOTW,Jazz,The Game Live performance: 74-75 78-81 *I don't like to see Freddie with tights and ballet slippers, singing We Will Rock You (Oh god !), but, well that was Fred |
Mayboy 23.04.2004 07:16 |
All the 80s stuff :D |

I prefer the sounds they came up with around the time of "The Miracle". It seems that the group was rejuvenated by their lay off after the Magic Tour and they were experimenting with different melodies. Also the decision to share songwriting credit made for more of a group effort. I look at songs like "Breakthru", "Was It All Worth It" and "Hang On In There" as examples of how they were branching out and incorporating more "live" playing in the studio. Also Freddie's knowledge of his mortality must have provided an energy and urgency to the recordings that must have spurred on the rest of the group, even though they did not know the extent of his condition. |
queenrocks! 10902 23.04.2004 13:12 |
I like all three all the same |
Mr.Jingles 23.04.2004 13:48 |
Many people criticize Queen for changing their sound in the 80s and going more towards the pop/rock mainstream and leaving behind their glam & progessive rock sound behind. Queen did in fact change after 'A Day At The Races', and 'News Of The World' was perhaps their first non-glam rock album and the album had a sound heavier than any other previous albums. Probably they wanted to change as a wish to experiment with the very popular heavy metal & punk sounds which were very popular when the album was released. After 'Jazz' pretty much every single album was a mix of pop and rock. I have to agree with those that say that the 1974-1976 era was without a doubt their best, but I have to say many so called "fans" consider everything afterwars was crap. Queen as all rock bands has to evolve and try something new. Yes, perhaps 'Hot Space' was a little bit too much, and too "not Queen like", but aside from that Queen always made great music. To me, all eras were great. Despite their popularity fall in the States, Queen grew bigger and stronger on the rest of the world. I think that prooves to everyone that Queen was a band always on the rise. |
rhapsody__87 23.04.2004 15:08 |
I LOVE Hot Space... I think I'm the only one, but I can listen to that over and over. I even like 'Body Language'... I just feel that all the songs on there are good, even if they sound different from what we're used to. I don't think there's one Queen album I don't like. |
Into La Ment 23.04.2004 16:42 |
Yes in the 70s, Roger was just PRETTY.*sigh* I just have to agree with that! Very prettiful indeed. Saying that, I do prefer '70s Freddie, looks-wise. I really haven't a clue why... just something about him. *OK... this is just me being a teenager... best to ignore.* |
Brian's sweet sister 23.04.2004 18:01 |
I liked the whole Queen II era a lot. What with the fantasy aura, and the sweet and puzzling lyrics e.g fairy fellers MS., ogre battle etc. So overall, the 70s was the best for me! Freddie's voice was more youthful and fresh sounding then as well. Not forgetting Roger's hair was just beautiful then! :) |
Kuku 23.04.2004 22:30 |
Rhapsody_87, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! Hot Space is a very important album for me. It's not a matter of favouring Queen; it contains some of the best tunes and definitely the best vocal ever. Doesn't matter if synth is horrible - I still think the album is exceptional. Anyways, for me: (1) Vocal: Sheer Heart Attack, Hot Space, the Miracle and Innuendo. All the vocal works are great, but while listening to some of the early demos I notice that the vocal skill is a little shaky. These four albums, however... one couldn't possibly soar above these. (And they span over 20 years! Goes to show how talented Freddie was.) (2) Instrumental: Queen II, ANATO and ADATR, Innuendo. I'd give credit for Made In Heaven, too. Somehow I like live instrumental versions better, usually. (3) Live: 1970-1975 (Up to and including Hammersmith Odeon), 1980-1983 (including Hot Space tour, the best tour series) I think the Miracle is also so horribly underestimated, sometimes even by fans... |
Brian_Mays_Wig 24.04.2004 04:19 |
I like The Miracle/Innuendo era simply for the fact that Freddie was so ill and produced 2 amazing albums. I love Live Killers too. |
Borhap80 24.04.2004 05:03 |
It's without doubt the era 99-04. Hence : Robbie Williams "We Are The Champions" Five - We Will rock you - That was fab !!! Not to mention "we will rock you" with Britney, Pink and Beoncey - a CLASSIC !! The new version of Under Pressure with new drums and bass from 99 also deserves credit !!! Ok.. I'm tired... |
Brianmay1975 24.04.2004 07:54 |
My fav Queen era is definitely the 70s. I really love the A Night At The Opera. I'm so very young, I wasn't born by then (my parents weren't even married yet!), but i accidentally discovered that album and it was love at first hearing to me. And the first albums I bought were A Day At The Races and News Of The World. And I also like the Sheer Heart Attack and the JAZZ. They were young, bold, their music was shining with strength and they knew how to mix the glam and the hard in the body of these albums. But all their music is terrific, I can't get enough of it, there's no Queen album that I don't like. And in what concerns the 00s, I can't say they don't exist for me. In fact, that's the only era in which those lads and me are contemporary. I just love them! P.S. Roger was surely very pretty in the 70s, but Brian looks great even now! Wow! |
BornToBeKings 25.04.2004 01:27 |
Of course, I love all things Queen but... With all due respect to the excellent '70s era and the solid late '80s into the '90s, I've gotta stick up for 1980-1986 (I believe that spans the "Synth Overdose" and "Euro Pop" eras that someone suggested earlier). I'm really a sucker for all the electronic tomfoolerly and intense bombast of those years. But the material produced by Queen during the early to mid-eighties is more than just throwaway pop-rock. Queen truly continued to innovate and diversify their repertoire: they incorporated funk (AOBTD; Back Chat), synth rock (Radio Ga Ga; I Want to Break Free), traditional Queen rock (Dragon Attack; Hammer to Fall), premier ballads (Las Palabras de Amor; Who Wants to Live Forever), and just made more hits (Under Pressure; A Kind of Magic; CLTCL). I've heard some of my more casual Queen-loving friends say that this era was too sappy or too much of a departure, but I admire how Queen took risks that paid off, in my mind at least (Hot Space, Flash Gordon soundtrack, etc). And while Queen was always a tremendous live act, 1980-86 saw them sell out huge arenas all over the world (expect in the U.S.), including virtuoso performances at Live Aid and throughout the entire Magic tour: especially Wembley and Knebworth. I guess I've gone on a bit too long, but I just cherish the 1980-1986 Queen era and I believe that it stands up musically against the rest of the band's career. |
April Lady 25.04.2004 16:29 |
I think up to and including A Day at the Races, but also including Innuendo. I think Freddie was more at one with himself at that period than any other. |
April Lady 25.04.2004 16:31 |
The Innuendo period, that is. |
SallyJ. 25.04.2004 17:01 |
70's for me :) |
Clare McGann 26.04.2004 10:59 |
Definatly the 70's era...from Queen through to News of the World...at their best musically, and they all were gorgeous then....I think John looked much better with long hair!! |
AC 26.04.2004 13:27 |
70's. No doubt. |
7Innuendo7 26.04.2004 17:24 |

teddybear 27.04.2004 18:02 |
I love all the eras for Queens music as you hear them grow and change, but I guess I do really love the early to mid 70s. I also love the 1979 footage - Freddie in those leathers - yum yum - *teddy smacks her lips* he was pretty darn cute then. But audio - I would pick the 70's as the music was so full and rich and layered (hmmmmm like a strawberry shortcake - gotta get me some of that) - and Freddies voice had a sensuousness to it that was gone in later years as it got more powerful. But of course, we all love Queen any old way, but I dont really class the recent songs by Brian and Roger as Queen (it is only half of Queen) LOL |
The Mad Hatter 28.04.2004 22:37 |
I think that my favorite Queen era(s) would be the 70s and 90s/Innuendo period. Listening to Innuendo and hearing how incredible Freddie's voice was even though he was so ill, it's just unbelievable. I also love the production from 1974-76, it's amazing. And I have to admit that I really love Freddie's look from the 70s, with the long hair and such. There's just something about it..... |
