12 years ago on the 20th April 1992, Wembley Stadium, London, saw fans and stars from around the world pay tribute to Freddie Mercury, i was very priveledged to have been able to attend this very emotional concert, where were you sat/stood?.
I was there with Shanyaks. We were both in posession of controlled substances at the time so we sat right at the back just to the right of the entrance tunnell to avoid the attention of the authorities. We even saw that prick Anthony Wilson doing his bit for BBC2. It wasn't until just before Def Leppard came on that we made our way onto the pitch and we ended up level with the control tower, to the left looking towards the stage. It was a great day indeed though and I have fond memories of it.
If you still have the original BBC broadcast you can see us during Paul Young's rendition of Radio Ga Ga. As the camera pansacross the stadium you can clearly see Shanyaks in his blue shirt and brown suede waistcoat. He was on my shoulders at the time so all you can see of me is a glimpse of my napper.
fatty.
How did you like Innuendo, fatty? I have a minority opinion actually liking the performance a lot, notwithstanding the mistakes - it was live, after all. I would like to know how you perceived it in the audience that night.
Yes, I went with my then girlfriend, my sister and her boyfriend, my best friend and his cousin.
Had a row with the girlfriend. We should have split up at the time, but didn't. Our divorce will be final in a few weeks...
Watched the DVD a few weeks ago. It was a great concert. Reminisced about Spinal Tap's appearance which had tears rolling down my cheeks. Strange days indeed.
12 Years ago eh! Yes I was there with the wife, It was a bit of a wrench to start off with for her our first child had been born only a few weeks before and it was the first day we had not seen our little baby, who is now a typical 12 year old .
However the concert was well worth it we cryed and laughed and my undying memory was everybody just hugging each other and crying when they showed Freddie walking out on the video screens right at the end!
It wasn't about whether the mike failed on Innuendo or whether George Micheal was the best it was about saying Goodbye to our hero Freddie Mercury the greatest frontman ever.
Singer of songs Lover of Life
Yes I was there. With my uncle and my cousin, who sadly died in January. Fantastic day, I saw Tony Wilson too Fatty as we were entering the stadium! The Freddie lookalike that kept being shown on telly was on our turnstile and did the old 'De Oh' bit. Great atmosphere. I was sat in the stands to the right hand side of the stadium about half way down. I thought Innuendo was very good. And Nick Faldo was sat behind me so he signed my program. A day that will never be forgotten!
Sounds like we went through the same gate (Gate C ) coz I remember the lookalike guy doing the day-oh's too. And Shanyaks got bitten by a police horse.
fatty.
God remember as it was yesterday finally getting in halfway through metallica's set the mexican wave durning the sat link up with south africa rogers thundrous drumming during tsmgo extreme, gaga being played endless times on the screens George Michael sbtl, the pyros shaking the staduim as Brian, Roger and John came on stage to start tymd and the crap chicken kebabs from the buger van out side what a day
I wasn't able to attend the show the day mainly because I live in Philly. But I was glued to the TV to watch the poor FOX TV edit. I plan to watch the DVD tonight when I get home. I have some "relaxation paraphernalia" to settle me in then I'm going to enjoy the show. Do you think I should watch the opening acts from the VHS or just go straight to the DVD?
Oh gosh I completely forgot today was the anniversary. People were talking about the OTHER 4/20 so it didn't register with me.
Definitely watching my DVD later but I'm content with the 25 minutes of Freddie inserts. Those make me cry like a baby every time...
Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough at the time to go to the concert (I was 5) but from what I see on the DVD, I enjoy. I want the VHS to see the other performances, though! What a rip that we couldn't get the WHOLE thing on DVD.
Hahaha iGSM.
No... the other 4/20 is when all the potheads glorify the fact that they do indeed smoke pot. It's kind of big in my school... lovely, eh?
Well I settled in to watch the dvd. I was good to see again. Songs I didn't think were done all that good actually were. Las Palabras was performed really well. SCC really did rock. Some things I noticed that fall under the "coulda-shoulda- woulda category. Like how come Brian didn't walk out w/ the Ovation and play LOML and have the audience sing the entire song? That would have brought the house down no question.
Also I noticed at the end when WATC was FINALLY ended that Robert Plant walked right up the drum riser to thank Roger & shake his hand. Having experienced the same thing himself 11 years earlier & probablly knowing the hollow gut shot feeling Roger, Brian and John were all experiencing, he was all class that night.
