link I wish Queen were chosen to be on here but I agree with about 7 of the ten on here. |
Mr.Jingles 29.03.2004 11:39 |
Sly and the Family Stone?? The Velvet Underground?? You gotta be fuckin' kidding me for putting those 2 bands in there. There are a couple that should be perhaps dropped from the list though, but those 2 are a joke. To me the list should go as this (NOTE: Not as best bands ever, but as the most influential) 1. The Beatles 3. Led Zeppelin 4. The Jimmy Hendrix Experience 5. Queen 6. Pink Floyd 7. The Doors 8. Metallica 9. U2 10. Nirvana |
Krizzy 29.03.2004 11:46 |
You got to be kidding me...where's Queen? Velvet Underground? No flipping way! Queen should at least be number 7 or even 8, pure BS survey! Kriz >:< |
Mr.Jingles 29.03.2004 11:49 |
American media has always chosen to ignore Queen. Too sad because most American musicians have been influenced by them. Just look at all the artists that attended 'The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert' and tell me that Queen wasn't influential. |
Krizzy 29.03.2004 12:00 |
GET ME OUTTA HERE!!! I'm moving to country where rock is still king! Seriously, what else is new...FM was considered too gay for the 1980s homophobic Reagan America. But us American Queenies still love them even though we are the red-headed step child of Queen's fans. LOL! Kriz ;o) |
-fatty- 2850 29.03.2004 15:15 |
I read the full list in the paper last week and Queen were in the list. They were 23rd I think. fatty. |
Brandon 29.03.2004 15:50 |
I like Jingle's list aside from The Doors and U2. While they are no doubt highyl popular, I've never heard any popular musicians gush about any of there technical abilities. Substitute suggestions include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers or a number of other southern bands that have tremendously impacted the music scene. Also, what about Van Halen? Black Sabbath? I realize that this is only a top ten but these others deserve mentioning somewhere along the way. |
geeksandgeeks 29.03.2004 15:52 |
Good to see my dear old Velvets in there. Punk rock would not exist without them. Neither would alternative. And neither would gr---wait a minute. Without Queen, grunge would not exist either. Give me the name of a grunge rocker and I will cite you at least one place where (s)he has named Queen as a major influence. So where are they? And where the hell is Simon and Garfunkel??? |
Under Pressure 29.03.2004 17:07 |
So many people were influenced by Velvet Underground, they should definitly be on the list. Queen ... as much as I love them, I don't think they've inspired people. Then again ... I don't think U2 has either. |

The only thing Metallica and Nirvana has inspired me to do is vomit ;) edited to correct my spelling error. Thanks geeks ;) |
geeksandgeeks 29.03.2004 18:36 |
_Matt_, who exactly is Nirva? ;) I don't entirely get Sly & the Family Stone, but I'm not about to object to it. |

Dylan influences everyone, everyone else are rubbish, henceforth it is seen that Dylan is the best. Anyone who argues will get no complaint from me but be warned, I am friends with George Bush and I can get him to personally bomb anywhere I want. He doesn't know what he's bombing, anyway. |

Let's look at this list, shall we? The Beatles - no need to say anything about this one. The Rolling Stones - Although they are overrated, imo, they were the anti-Beatles. Their music was more bluesy oriented, more into the roots of RnR. Probably the RS gave the okay to other musicians to go towards the blues rock direction like Cream, for example. U2 - They were probably the biggest band in the 1980's. Their songs were the antithesis of the hair metal plague of the 80's. Sure their core was more new wave mixed with punk. But they had evolved during the years. Another thing, Joshua Tree, excellent album. The Grateful Dead - The forerunners of the Hippie or Counterculture movement of the late 60's. Although they never had consecutive successful hits (except for 1986's or 87's 'Touch of Grey'), they had a great fan following (infamous 'Deadheads'), and surely inspired bands like Phish. Velvet Underground - Experimental band, and very underrated. I'm surprised that they are on this list. I'm all for a band that are eclectic, and combine art, and music. Led Zeppelin - IMO they are overrated. But the majority know that this band were intrical in the beginning of the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock movement, along with Black Sabbath. Ramones - Three chords, fun songs, and attitude. They were the epitome of punk in NYC back in the mid 70's. Although I think the New York Dolls were much heavier to be Punk than Glam, and they were the first. Pink Floyd - Great conceptual albums, trips the hell out of me. Bob Marley and the Wailers - Brought Reggae to the masses. Good positive message, and strong social commentary with great tunes. Sly and the Family Stone - Aw cmon! They are one of the greatest Funk bands of the 70's. They were fun! Conclusion: I agree with this. BTW don't you think that some of you might've taken this a bit too seriously? Obviously lists are based on opinions. I think there is no need to be over critical over these unofficial lists. |

I think it's fair to say Queen were very influential. Everyone from Guns N Roses to Poison to the Foo Fighters and back. Dylan has been a definite influence on many but over time his influence has dwindled. But acts like The Beatles and Floyd are continuously mentioned today. |
geeksandgeeks 30.03.2004 17:56 |
Marie, people always take these lists too seriously, I'll never forget the way people were bitching about that Seattle radio list I posted. It's fun to gripe :) |
Mr.Jingles 30.03.2004 18:47 |
<< Dylan influences everyone, everyone else are rubbish, henceforth it is seen that Dylan is the best >> In the words of Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, I sure will agree that Dylan is indeed the best... ...FOR ME TO POOP ON!! |
TheMiracle 30.03.2004 21:25 |
They don't even have Queen on the Honorable Mention list! |
Holly2003 31.03.2004 03:03 |
Any list of top rock bands that does not contain the words "Thin" and "Lizzy" is not worth reading. |
The Real Wizard 31.03.2004 11:01 |
"Led Zeppelin - IMO they are overrated. But the majority know that this band were intrical in the beginning of the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock movement, along with Black Sabbath." Led Zeppelin made the underground blues a common art form. They were not thieves as people call them, as it was very common for bluesmen to "borrow" from each other. Led Zeppelin changed the way rock bands played live. They perfected the word "improvisation". No other band (except for perhaps the Grateful Dead) could take 90 minutes of prepared music and play for over 3 hours, every night... and be different and interesting every night. Where is Rush? Without Rush, progressive rock wouldn't even be close to a commercial thing. Let's keep in mind, this is an American list. Using the FM Tribute was a great example, but of all the artists that played there, how many were US-born? Which would be easier: Naming 20 European artists influenced by Queen, or 5 US artists influenced by Queen? From an American perspective, #23 is exactly where Queen belongs. But from a European perspective, if they wouldn't be in the top 5, it would surely be an outrage. |
Mr Mercury 31.03.2004 17:48 |
"Where is Rush? Without Rush, progressive rock wouldn't even be close to a commercial thing" You aint half correct there GH. Saw them live way back in 86. And it stills rates as one of my fave concerts. |
The Real Wizard 31.03.2004 22:14 |
Okay, maybe you just didn't understand me completely... I love Rush, and without their contributions to progressive rock, the entire genre would not be something the general commercial music audience would be interested in nearly as much as they are today. |
Brian_Mays_Wig 01.04.2004 03:57 |
Eh??? The Beatles? Rock? MY ARSE, They are the most over-rated bag of bollocks ever. Bob Marley?? Excuse me - BULLSHIT. Theyre reggae. Who the hell compiled this?? If you look at music as a whole then Queen would probably appear in the top 10, The Beatles would be top, they always are, but a Rock survey?? This is pants! |
The Real Wizard 01.04.2004 12:19 |
Just because you don't like The Beatles doesn't change the impact they had. Face it - The Beatles changed the world. And The Beatles influenced (in one form or another along the way) virtually every rock-oriented band to come after them. But yeah, I can't swallow the Bob Marley thing too well, either. |

Guitar Hero wrote: Just because you don't like The Beatles doesn't change the impact they had. Face it - The Beatles changed the world. They were influenced heavily by The Beatles. |
Mr.Jingles 01.04.2004 14:15 |
Let's put it in Brian's own words... "Nobody beats The Beatles". I can understand why The Rolling Stones are overated since they've been playing the same R&B riffs on almost every single song they have. But The Beatles, please these guys deserve all the respect they get. |
geeksandgeeks 01.04.2004 15:42 |
Well said, both Dan and Guitar Hero. I'm not the biggest Beatles fan OR the biggest Rush fan, but I do think they should both be on there. This is a list regarding INFLUENCE, not technical quality or personal taste. In which case Rush, the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, the Everly Brothers, the Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin, Nirvana, David Bowie, and REM!!!!!!! all need to be given a shout. |
