I would love to hear people views on the worst ever guitar solo on any Queen or Queen related song. Mine is probably the invisible man- it is way too fast to ever remember ir-RUBBISH |
iGSM 20.03.2004 05:35 |
The John Farnham 'We Will Rock You' extended solo. Shit. |
Penis - Vagina 20.03.2004 12:25 |
Brian playing along with 'Headlong' for a radio show. Very bad idea it was. Or perhaps the studio version of 'I Want to Break Free' since it's not a guitar but rather an electronic fart sound emulator. |
Big Black 20.03.2004 14:57 |
That's funny DF. I saw Brian at HMV in Toronto in '91 promoting Innuendo. He talked, signed autographs and played 3 songs along to a CD (it coincided with Hollywood's release of the Queen catalogue.) TYMD, Under Pressure, then Headlong, which was rather decent until the end, when Brian played an amazing outro after the CD ended. What a moment! If you don't like the power an electric guitar has over people it wouldn't mean much to you but his passion and the sustain he had ringing out still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. |
The Real Wizard 20.03.2004 14:58 |
"Mine is probably the invisible man- it is way too fast to ever remember ir-RUBBISH" Just because it's too fast for your slow ears doesn't mean it's a crap guitar solo. This solo shows that Brian is one or two steps below virtuoso status, and that he definitely had/has the potential to hit such status, if he would really work hard on it. But being as that's not his thing, he doesn't. |
Penis - Vagina 20.03.2004 15:05 |
Well, perhaps he was having a better day :) This is the one I'm judging it by: link |

Don't worry, I know very well of the so-called "requirements" of being classified as a virtuoso. I said Brian definitely had the potential. But overall, Brian was indeed not a virtuoso, and it definitely wasn't his intention to be one. Big Black - I've got that HMV performance on video, so I'll check it out to see this moment you speak of. Do you have this video as well? Deacon Fan, I listened to that mp3 of Headlong, and I didn't see anything bad about it. It was just an incredibly loose jam to the song, like most of Brian's performances on his radio tour in '91. |
Little_Queenie 21.03.2004 05:12 |
There's no such thing like bad Brian's solo. At least not any I listened.. |
Mayboy 21.03.2004 07:19 |
agreed Little_Queenie there all great! :D |
SallyJ. 21.03.2004 07:46 |
except maybe the one on Put out the Fire...... ;)) |
Daburcor? 21.03.2004 08:18 |
Hmmm... This is a really tough question. I'll have to think hard about this... |
MercuryArts 21.03.2004 11:50 |
Have to agree w/ DF. I Want To Break Free is probablly the worst "solo" ever released. As for Put Out the Fire, I think that solo carries the song Also, I have the audio Of Brian's visit to Philly during that Promo. tour in 91. He played long to at least ten songs. I guess he did similar performances at all the statons he visited. The only thing he didn't do & I wish he had was perform some of the Brighton Rock solo. Instead he just jammed w/ his then new Zoom Boxes he was pluging. It kind of reminded me of a rock version of Bijou. But over all it was great to hear him play & tell stories of his past. The meeting of Groucho Marx was a great story. p.s. Way to St. Joe's!! On to the Sweet 16!!! Hawk will nerver die! |
MercuryArts 21.03.2004 11:52 |
Hawk will NEVER die. Nice typo Steve!!! |
FriedChicken 21.03.2004 16:45 |
I don't like the solo of Seven Seas Of Rhye, it doesn't fit very well |
andYYY 21.03.2004 17:07 |
Easy The solo and Outro solo of The Loser In The End, I think they were played by freddies cats.... |
lordmazza 21.03.2004 17:23 |
Well, i like alot of Brian's solo. To me they're the bit that liven up nearly every Queen song I listen to! I just love 'em. I guess his worst guitar solo has to be when he doesn't have one at all! lol! |
Merlot 21.03.2004 17:29 |

Mr.Jingles 21.03.2004 17:55 |
There are Queen songs I hate, but even from those I hate the only thing I seem to like are the guitar solos. |
Lester Burnham 21.03.2004 18:06 |
Funny, because I feel the same way - no matter how bad the song is, there always seems to be a decent guitar solo that saves the day. There are exceptions, but very rarely does Brian perform a bad solo. |
The Real Wizard 22.03.2004 01:21 |
"The solo and Outro solo of The Loser In The End, I think they were played by freddies cats...." Hehehe... but really, I think what's really pissing people off isn't the guitar work itself, but the stereo panning. It was definitely over-done. Honestly, I don't think Brian has ever done an out and out "bad guitar solo". But he has definitely had up days and down days, like practically anyone else. |
Josuè 22.03.2004 01:26 |
"except maybe the one on Put out the Fire...... ;))" lol! he was drunk! |
Oberon 22.03.2004 12:46 |
Although i wish Break Free solo had been done properly on guitar, I think the actually solo is great. The notes etc I mean. Brian said on his soap box that it was done on synth, but I always thought it must have been done by guitar synth (i.e. plugging the guitar into a synth so the action and feel of the guitar is simply synth'd). If not, then I commend Brian on getting some excellent feeling out of a synth!!! |
Big Black 22.03.2004 13:01 |
"Big Black - I've got that HMV performance on video, so I'll check it out to see this moment you speak of. Do you have this video as well?" No I don't GH. It's funny, it wasn't anything special, it was just him playing an extended outro and if my aging memory serves me well, he played an ascending run, not blinding speed but he was using his rake technique to make the final notes scream and think he was bending on the 24th fret and it sounded glorious. It may turn out to be total shite on video but I thought the passion and sound was fantastic. Reminds me of the time that I saw Extreme in T.O. on their last tour. Nuno played an incredible bit at the end of Get the Funk Out and the two guys standing next to me looked at each other, then looked at me and their faces said, "we have just witnessed genius." God bless the guitar! |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 22.03.2004 20:26 |
Worst ever guitar solo on a Queen song: Delilah. Guitars were not made to "meow". |
The Real Wizard 23.03.2004 01:37 |
"Delilah. Guitars were not made to "meow"." But Brian proved the theory wrong, didn't he? What is it with people here who cannot accept anything innovative? BB, I've always wanted to get into Extreme. Is there a particular album I should look for? God bless the guitar indeed. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 23.03.2004 20:14 |
Hi, Guitar Hero. Well, you certainly jumped into a conclusion in the phrase below, didn't you? :D "What is it with people here who cannot accept anything innovative?" Well, I think Delilah is a disgrace and a shame for Queen forever. None of them should've "meowed", and I include the fifth Queen member there, the Red Special. On the other hand, I LOVE inovation. Not the ones that make me sick, like Queen and the poor RS "meowing". Believe me or not, not liking my rocking (ok, and "poping") idols to meow doesn't mean I'm old fashioned or that I hate inovations or something. I guess you went a LITTLE bit too far with that conclusion, buddy. ;) Respect, Ogre- |
Janet 23.03.2004 20:21 |
I don't look at Delilah as disgrace or a shame to Queen, rather I look at it as indulging a dying man who obviously loved his cat very much, and who was greatly comforted by her during his final days. I appreciate it for what I take it to be. A bad Brian solo? There are some that I like more than others, but I don't really think of any of them as bad. |
Little_Queenie 23.03.2004 20:57 |
I totally dissagree with you about Delilah being disgrace and the shame of Queen. Really like that song, there's something special and unusual about it. And I agree Brian proved it wrong that Red Special cant meow:)) Actually, I can't think of any Queen songs I would find being disgrace or the shame. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 23.03.2004 22:59 |
Thank God some people like that song. Otherwise it'd be useless. That's the beauty of mankind: differences. :) Brian is the musician that brings more joy to my life, there is no doubt about it. And, boy, do I like music. But, IMHO, he makes some bad songs or solos from time to time. That is, comparing those bad songs or solos to his usual songs and solos, which are commonly very close to perfection, of course. And I will never forgive him or any of the other members for Delilah. :D (this last line was a joke, of course) ;) Finally, Janet, I hope you forgive me for this last humurous comment I'll make now. I understand your point and I think it is a very strong one. But I can't help making a last joke: Ok, they did it for Freddie. But did it really need to be recorded, and, even worse, released?! :) Cheers, Ogre- |
Penis - Vagina 23.03.2004 23:04 |
Janet writ: "I don't look at Delilah as disgrace or a shame to Queen, rather I look at it as indulging a dying man who obviously loved his cat very much, and who was greatly comforted by her during his final days. I appreciate it for what I take it to be." That's exactly the way I feel about it, plus I think it's a cute song. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 23.03.2004 23:10 |
Hey, DF! I hope I'm still allowed to download your mixes, nonetheless. :) |
Penis - Vagina 23.03.2004 23:28 |
Of course Arnaldo :) As Sharon Swab, former A&R at Hollywood Records once told me: "Different opinions make the world go around" |
Little_Queenie 24.03.2004 06:48 |
"Ok, they did it for Freddie. But did it really need to be recorded, and, even worse, released?! :)" Yes, it really had to be released, because in other case, I couldn't sing along with Freddie: "Ooooooh, you make me soooo very happy, you give me kisses and I go out of my mind, and then you make me slightly mad when you pee all over my............":)))) My fave part:)) Delilah rocks!!!:))) |
bolan 24.03.2004 11:44 |
Headlong-Just not a Queen solo |
The Real Wizard 24.03.2004 11:57 |
Alright Arnaldo, I'll retract the statement, just for you. :) |
Iam the one 24.03.2004 11:58 |
Worst:D |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 24.03.2004 15:56 |
Hey, Guitar Hero! Thanks for that, even though I never intended that much! :D Cheers, Ogre- |
Trisonic77 24.03.2004 16:30 |
All time worst has to be Have a cigar, with foo fighters. With a solo like that he should have never attached his name to the project. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 24.03.2004 17:29 |
Wow, Trisonic77, I happen to love that one :) Cheers, Ogre- |
lordmazza 24.03.2004 18:23 |
lol:D indeed! Playing with Foo Fighters has gotta be only annoying thing I find about Brian May! I mean, those guys are destroying Rock 'n Roll for everyone! Where's the fun in their music? Where are the smiles? And as a matter fact, where are guitar in solos in almost any new rock song? Gone!!!! What we need back is good old heavy metal and classic rock! |
The Real Wizard 24.03.2004 23:32 |
"Thanks for that, even though I never intended that much! :D" Hehe... :) I retracted it just for you, but it doesn't mean I'm retracting it for many other people. There are far too many music fans who cannot appreciate anything differentor innovative, because it didn't sound like what they're used to hearing. Why else does every pop song sound the same these days? Because the commercial listening audience has little to no diversity, and therefore, the truly innovative musicians aren't welcome. Who's to blame? MTV. Completely. Start at 1980 and watch the steady decline in the overall quality of chart hits, and at the same time, watch how more and more important the image becomes, and not the quality of music. Lordmazza, the sound of commercial rock music is going way downhill, I agree. But the key word is "commercial". Check out bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, Stratovarius, and Pain Of Salvation. These are the bands that should be saving commercial rock music, but today's audience isn't interested in them. These bands are over the heads 90% of the listening audience. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 25.03.2004 14:58 |
"There are far too many music fans who cannot appreciate anything differentor innovative, because it didn't sound like what they're used to hearing. " I see your point, Guitar Hero. Hip hop young fans are a nice example. Of course there are exceptions, but they seem to only want to listen to that kind of music. Weird :) Cheers, Ogre- |
