I wanted to know if any of you guys have made donations to any of those organizations that help poor people in third world countries.
I was having this discussion with some friends, and although we all agreed that it's a great thing to help, we were also wondering which of these organizations are the most reliable.
I never given any donations.
However, I've contributed in charity drives, and giving second hand clothes for the poor.
Still I think that Unicef is the only reliable charitable organisation there is. They've done good work in the past.
Oh, and the Salvation Army.
I've given to Amnesty International once (at the urging of Eurythmics) and I give stuff to the Disabled American veterans thrift stores (including my old Greatest Hits I & II Gold Collection, which I then bought new again a week later), and Salvation Army because they've helped me pay my gas bill a couple times when I've spent too much on Queen stuff (see how it all works out).
Although there's poverty in America as in every single country in the world, at least here people are helped through food stamps and shelters. Sure it's still a low standard of living, but it provides the basic to survive.
In other countries things are far worse, and everyday that goes by without food or shelter is another day of struggle against death.
We're all humans, and we share one world. That goes far beyond nation boundaries.
I prefer small groups that actually perform the oversees work themselves. I think supporting small groups (church organizations, college students, etc) that go overseas and help, whether by providing humanitarian aid or helping in building-construction, benefits more people. Having done both (supporting others and working there myself), it gives you a better perspective on things and you realize that there are some problems that extend beyond our borders.
