Why were these never included on any albumn? Does anyone know what these songs are about? I think they are great songs and the guitar work is Brians best tone ever. |
Lester Burnham 08.02.2004 23:14 |
I read somewhere (here, actually) that Brian and Freddie considered 'A Human Body' was too melodic for "The Game" and that 'Coming Soon' was supposed to be the B-side. 'Soul Brother' I think was just a throwaway jam that they pulled out for the B-side of 'Under Pressure' when Bowie didn't want their collaboration of 'Cool Cat' as the flip. 'A Human Body' is one of my favorite songs, much better than 'Coming Soon'. |
Trisonic77 08.02.2004 23:20 |
It seems like as short of an albumn as the game is they could have easily put it on. To me melodic wouldn't be a bad thing. |
Rien 09.02.2004 10:05 |
Non-album tracks used as b-sides increase single sales. But, just feel lucky they did release them on a single. If it weren't proper tracks for an album Queen might as well have NOT released them in any way. |
Maz 09.02.2004 10:26 |
Doesn't Roger hate A Human Body? At least that was the word going around when it didn't show up on the new DVD-A of The Game. |
Lester Burnham 09.02.2004 10:39 |
I heard that too, except that rumor went way back to when The Game was initially reissued on US CD. |

Brian recently posted on his soapbox that 'Soul Brother' was a tune Freddie wrote about Brian. Listen to the mix, and it sounds like something from 'The Game' sessions, and not HS. imho, it would have been a dreadful track for an LP. AHB needed a bit more 'polish'. Would have fit perfectly on Roger's FIS album. |
Hitman 09.02.2004 11:39 |
i love A human body & Soul Brother!!!! i agree they are better than coming soon ;) anyawy when they released THE GAME "coming soon" (maybe) was in the mood of the album |
Sebastian 09.02.2004 12:09 |
Roger was so proud of 'A Human Body' and wanted it on the album instead of 'Coming Soon', but Fred and Brian argued that the album would be too melodic with AHB because they had already written three downbeat songs for the album (I guess they were Save Me, Play The Game and SASS). I think the recordings of 'Soul Brother' are from The Game era instead of Hot Space era. I can't prove it though |
Penis - Vagina 09.02.2004 12:30 |
"I think the recordings of 'Soul Brother' are from The Game era instead of Hot Space era. I can't prove it though" Impossible. The song makes reference to 'Under Pressure' amongst other songs so that of course had to come first. |
Sebastian 09.02.2004 12:34 |
Perhaps 'Under Pressure' was just another line of the song, and later on they wrote a song with that title, like Dragon Attack and Back Chat |
Penetration_Guru 09.02.2004 12:45 |
Deacon Fan - Fat Bottomed Girls & Bicycle Race refer to each other - apply your logic to that, would you? |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 09.02.2004 12:58 |
Too bad A Human Body hasn't been released in digital quality yet. I don't even think I've seen a "CD Quality" version leaked yet. |
Penis - Vagina 09.02.2004 13:02 |
I figured there would be arguments over this. First of all, many sources can confirm the recording date, whatever it is, so there isn't an argument really. Why would everyone involved dream up a grand conspiricy to mislead folks as to when one little song was recorded? But anyway, Yeah, you know what? You're exactly right! Soul Brother must be where they came up with the final title for 'Under Pressure' (originally it was "People On The Streets"). Thank God that mystery is solved! One of the books I read recently, either Hutton's or Phoebe's, mentioned the writing of the song and most likely the date as well.. I recall Freddie telling Brian that it was written for him but Brian didn't take it too seriously since it had been written so quickly. This must have been in Phoebe's book, as Hutton wouldn't have been around back then and the Phoebe book I read is now back at the library. I'm sure someone else can find this passage. P_G, I'm not sure what you mean about FBG & BR. They are obviously from the same sessions so I see nothing strange about the cross-referencing there. Was 'Headlong' inspired by the line in 'Breakthru'? There are many examples like that. The entire 'Paradise Theatre' concept is said to be inspired by a line in 'Blue Collar Man'. Oh wait, that was STYX. I get them confused with Queen all the time :-P |
Sebastian 09.02.2004 13:12 |
Soul Brother could have been recorded in 1979/1980 but not included in albums or singles until 1981. The 'Under Pressure' line can easily be a coincidence and not neccesarily inspired the song, or inspired BY the song. |
John S Stuart 09.02.2004 15:31 |
"The 'Under Pressure' line can easily be a coincidence and not neccesarily inspired the song, or inspired BY the song". That is very true, but all of the above miss one simple point - "Soul Brother" was actually an exercise in "how many Queen titles can we fit into one song?". (Aside to the audience: "How many did you spot!") Therefore, it was pointless to include the lyric "Under Pressure" OTHER than as a reference to a previously released track - or b-side! For those still unconvinced - try the quiz below; God bless my soul here he comes now The man with the most how does he do it? Sure he's got style he's so heavy He's a trip can do anything Anything anything He's my soul brother He's my best friend he's my champion And he will rock you rock you rock you Because he's the saviour of the universe He can make you keep yourself alive Make yourself alive Oooh brother because he's somebody somebody He can love He's my soul brother When you're under pressure feeling under pressure Yeah pressure yeah pressure He won't let you down When you're under pressure Oh feeling under pressure yeah pressure So he won't let you down My brother won't let you down He won't he won't he won't let you down He can do anything anything anything He's my soul brother Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Oooh soul brother anything (soul brother) Anything (soul brother) anything (soul brother) He's my soul brother brother brother brother brother Anything (soul brother) anything (soul brother) anything (soul brother) He's my soul brother Soul brother he can do anything He can do anything Because he's my soul brother |

I was just gonna say exactly the same. |
TruePar 09.02.2004 19:01 |
The reason that A Human Body is not on the DVD-A disc or in CD quality anywhere is the the master tape has been lost since the early 80's. Until the tape is found - no CD quality version will ever be made (unless technology advances......) |
goinback 09.02.2004 19:16 |
From my recollection, "Under Pressure" came out 1 1/2 or 2 years before Hot Space (as a single and on the Greatest Hits 1981 album). It was chronologically closer to the release of The Game (and Flash Gordon) than Hot Space. |
John S Stuart 09.02.2004 19:40 |
Correct Gb. The actual (UK) release dates were; Flash (Single): 24 Nov 1980 Flash Gordon (OST LP): 8 Dec 1980 Under Pressure/Soul Brother: 26 October 1981 Greatest Hits: 2 November 1981 Hot Space: 21 May 1982 As for "A Human Body", I have a "perfect" digital CD copy taken directly from the "Complete Vision" LP. First, the mint condition LP was recorded onto DAT and from DAT digitally mastered onto CD. Because the run-in and outro "grove" has been excised - it means that the audible "snap, crackle and pop" of the disc has also been eliminated - giving the impression of "perfect" digital sound, without missing a beat of the music. OK - I had an unplayed LP to start with - and the digital equipment to record and transfer - but surely I am not the only person who has been able to do this? |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 09.02.2004 22:28 |
I wonder if the master tape of A Human Body has been found... I remember Greg Brooks mentioning that it was going to be part of the box set in one of the Queenonline Q&A's. |
Lester Burnham 09.02.2004 22:49 |
It's possible that the basic track for 'Soul Brother' was recorded during The Game sessions, with lyrics added either during the Under Pressure sessions or shortly after. |
celebrian 09.02.2004 23:08 |
I'm completely agree with the guy who said the human body is better than coming soon, there's many things that we like fans can't understand about Queen... But I love the game like it is |
Saffron Caribou 09.02.2004 23:29 |
I really like "A Human Body", not fond of "Soul Brother". I don't know why. It just never caught up with me. |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 10.02.2004 00:01 |
The first time I heard Soul Brother, it was on the Bside to the US heaven for everyone release. I thought it was pretty clever... it's always been one of my favorite Bsides. |
Penis - Vagina 10.02.2004 03:15 |
AdamUnger, keep in mind that Hollywood reversed the stereo channels on that version. All part of their "let's change something and see if anyone notices!" campaign. |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 10.02.2004 10:48 |
Yeah, I remember reading that from the Trainspotter's site quite some time ago. God forbid Hollywood Records release everything the way it's supposed to be. |

Sorry 'bout the gaffe as to SB being done during 'The Game'. I meant the sound mix was similar, as if they were debating at the time on whether to use the same type of mixing for HS as they had for UP and Flash, or revert back to The Game sound (which they did for The Works) Had my B-I-L burn the 'Complete Vision' vinyl onto disc recently. Me thinks the PTB could touch up AHB real easy minus the original tapes. It would have been a nice bonus on The Game DVD, even if it was ONLY in stereo. Both should have been included on the CD reissues. There are wonderful moments in both songs, but unlike tracks such as 'I Go Crazy', 'Hang On In There', 'Stealin'', and 'My Life Has Been Saved', and perhaps 'Hijack My Heart' and 'Lost Opportunity', they still sound exactly as what they ended up as ...b sides not fit for LPs. |
Adam Baboolal 10.02.2004 15:26 |
"or revert back to The Game sound (which they did for The Works)" Eh? No they didn't! lol |
*goodco* 10.02.2004 15:48 |
very similar to 'The Game' sound mix then geesh, tough crowd and rotten proofreader on this end again |
