Maybe it's my fine-tuned ear, but every time I listen to this song, towards the fadeout there's a little "plink" like a Microsoft error signal! I love the song but the fadeout's always intrigued me...has anyone else heard this?? (Or am I really slightly mad? LOL) |
Penis - Vagina 06.02.2004 00:30 |
Yes, I hear it twice. The 2nd one here comes at about 4:19: link Sounds like guitar to me :) |
MercuryArts 07.02.2004 01:25 |
Uggg, I love ya Lisa, but i have to say this is one the worse songs in the Queen catalog. Big mistake trying to release it as a single in the states. |
Saffron Caribou 07.02.2004 01:46 |
I would like to say that Dont Loose Your Head is the worst Queen song ever. Carry on :D BTW I heard that ping sound too Lisa, you arent going mad dear :D |
fat bottomed girl 7238 07.02.2004 04:03 |
Definately not going mad Lisa - I hear it too. |
The Fairy King 07.02.2004 08:26 |
wotz wrong with PISCTP??? it's a nice song and a good choice as a single, shame it wasn't a hit here in Holland =) |
~Silje~ 07.02.2004 09:35 |
I love Pain is so Close to Pleasure, what's wrong about it? It's such a fun song, one of my faves!. :-) |
Fenderek 07.02.2004 11:15 |
< On the other hand- is someone who isn't mad listening to "Pain/Pleasure"...?LOL |
Ian R 07.02.2004 12:50 |
Don't Lose Your Head is okay in my book - very dark and atmospheric in general, good synths, excellent drum machine work, and an enjoyable guitar solo on the fadeout. It's very 80s in style, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Stealin', on the other hand, is shite. |
Adam Baboolal 07.02.2004 12:52 |
Plink? It's not much, probably just a piano. What are you listening on!? :) Probably just in the same pitch. |
inu-liger 07.02.2004 13:34 |
"shame it wasn't a hit here in Holland" It was, but a minor top 30 hit. |
Sonja 07.02.2004 13:53 |
Pain Is So Close To Pleasure is ok, not one of my favourites but I can listen to it. And I also hear that, Lisa! I hadn't noticed before but I just went to check! Don't Lose Your Head sucks but Bicycle Race and most of the Hot Space album are the worst Queen songs IMO Oh, and Flash Gordon! |
Daburcor? 07.02.2004 13:59 |
Don't Lose Your Head isn't the best song off of AKOM, But Freddie's vocals on that ALWAYS impress me. His singing is enough to make me like it I should say. Off to listen for the 'plink'... |
Matti 07.02.2004 14:47 |
Ooh Ooh, Pain is so close to pleasure Sunshine and rainy weather go hand in hand together.... I love that song. Especially the vocals in it. |
MexQueenFM 07.02.2004 16:24 |
I love Pain is so close to pleasure, sometimes it's true |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 07.02.2004 16:25 |
I LOVE "Don't loose your head". I think this one and "Love Kills" (original metropolis version) are masterpieces in the '80s technopop kind of music. Oh, the subject is about "Pain...". I kind of like the song, but I preffer the 12" version. Cheers, Ogre- |
Whatinthewhatthe? 07.02.2004 16:30 |
Yay!! I'm glad other people are hearing the same "plink"! I've always imagined someone leaving a computer on near the sound booth and a Microsoft error chime coming on during the recording of the song...or something like that! "Pain" was a Freddie/Deacy song. It's catchy, and you can dance to it...seriously! (The 12" version has always sounded French to me -- heeheehee!!) I love Roger's drumming on Don't Lose Your Head, and Freddie's phrasing is most excellent (I love Joan Armatrading's voice on this song, nice offset to Freddie's strong, breathless vocals). Fred's sounds like he smoked a whole pack of Gitanes before singing the song -- very husky and breathy...mmm... |
sbazb 08.02.2004 15:03 |
Anyone around here got an mp3 of the single version of "Pain Is So Close To Pleasure"? I've always been intrigued about how it sounded. |
Saffron Caribou 09.02.2004 00:22 |
Well I find the constant "Don't Loose Your Head" line withing the whole length of the song is annoying. |
Lester Burnham 09.02.2004 00:24 |
"We get it Roger, we won't lose our heads. Thanks for the advice!" |
Saffron Caribou 09.02.2004 00:27 |
I wonder what's the songs meaning? What is Roger trying to tell us in that song? :P |
Kuku 09.02.2004 02:26 |
A great vocal.... but then when was it not??? |
Ian R 09.02.2004 02:46 |
Someone here mentioned that the lyrics for DLYH were aimed at John after he was arrested for drinking and driving. Not sure if this is true or just one of those bloody rumors... |
Penis - Vagina 09.02.2004 03:33 |
Just to point out the obvious.. the 'don't lose your head' part is inspired by the fact that in Highlander, losing your head was the only way an immortal could die.. so that's where the title comes from. As for the drunk-driving line, I would imagine he was trying to make the song into something more substantial with some lyrics about different ways of 'losing your head' but didn't end up getting too far. I like the sound of the song, but they should have left it instrumental, as it was featured in the film and used as a B-side called 'A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling' |
Whatinthewhatthe? 09.02.2004 20:43 |
The only real time Deacy ever lost his head was when he got really pissed and put his hand through a plate-glass window...he still carries the scars, I'm sure! (Hmmmmm...did Freddie write Keep Passing The Open Windows because of that incident? Shocking! :-)) |
inu-liger 09.02.2004 20:45 |
"Anyone around here got an mp3 of the single version of "Pain Is So Close To Pleasure"? I've always been intrigued about how it sounded. " I have the 7" US promo single, so I may have an MP3 somewhere...Will check and let you know tomorrow |
Lara 10.02.2004 02:11 |
Pain Is So Close To Pleasure sounds very Freddie to me though I keep trying to imagine the scene of Freddie and John working together. Lisa,I do not know why but somethin' tells me non of us would not like to be around when John loses his head or specially his temper. And I'm sure the accident that you kindly mentioned was not the only time when he got mad. |
Penis - Vagina 10.02.2004 05:31 |
I like the 12" but the goofy stuff they do with the vocals makes me giggle :) Back to the subject of strange noises... having just experienced 'Rocks' I noticed there's a new sound at the beginning of 'Tear It Up'. In the right channel on the first snare hit (or whatever that is) there is the sound of something kinda clangy and echoey.. It's not on the Hollywood remaster of 'The Works', though that's not to say it should or shouldn't have been. |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 10.02.2004 06:54 |
Thank God Dar... I mean "Inu" will help with the mp3. I wanted to share the bootleg version of it that I have, but I just can't find the time. Thanks, Inu! Cheers, Ogre- |
inu-liger 10.02.2004 10:22 |
You're welcome. I didn't check last night (cos I forgot to :P ) but I'm sure I have it cos I listened to it not too long ago now that I think of it. Do you need it at 320kbps, or is 128kbps fine? Or if you can send me some money by PayPal, I can make a CD-R. Either way is up to you. But I should say, the record I recorded it from is absolutely CLEAN sounding, very little noise at all! Quite possibly the best quality MP3 I can give to you guys |
inu-liger 11.02.2004 13:58 |
I will upload the MP3's tonight or tomorrow, depending...But the server I am using has limited bandwidth just to let you guys know (It's going to be on Angelfire Lycos) |
Holly2003 24.02.2013 17:14 |
Having just read that Deacy interview the penny drops: Pain is So Close to Pleasure = Diana Ross Chain Reaction. Deaky, you thieving git! :) |
waunakonor 24.02.2013 21:03 |
How is Stealin' shite? It's just a jam, not a full song. It's really cool for what it is. And Bicycle Race? Just...no... |
Stelios 25.02.2013 11:35 |
the blinc noise is the sound of May's guitar. its some sort of following the melody guitar filler and its more evident on the other two notes following .My guess is they did not payed much attention in the mix. As for Dont Loose Your Head, it definitively has my vote. Its not pretending to be a great composition. Just a great use of sounds and rhythm. Super-atmospheric synth chords, a wonderful drum machine programming and Freddie's power vocals are just enough to make it shine without asking for that much more. Its also great while driving, as you already know ! |

err.. yeah anyway, does anyone else think Pain is So Close to Pleasure sounds like Diana Ross's Chain Reaction ? |

Holly2003 wrote: err.. yeah anyway, does anyone else think Pain is So Close to Pleasure sounds like Diana Ross's Chain Reaction ?Absolutely, yes. There's no denying a lotta motown goin on with it. |
Heavenite 25.02.2013 20:24 |
Pain is so Close to Pleasure is in my bottom five Queen songs! Whereas I really like Don't Lose Your Head. I think it fits in really well with the other two rockers near it on the album > Gimme The Prize and Princes of the Universe. In fact, I like the rockers off AKOM whereas the soft ones (One Year of Love and Pain is so Close to Pleasure) are a bit sub par in my opinion. On The Works, it was the melodic stuff (Hard Life, Passing the Open Windows. GaGa, Machines, I Want to Break Free. Is This The World We Created) which are easily my favourites. Tear It Up is very average for a Queen rocker in my opinion and Hammer to Fall is OK, but wouldn't be in my top 6 off that album either. |
Karfan 09.03.2013 09:42 |
More interesting to me is the bum note played on keyboards around 01:32...Every time I listen to this song ,this note is becoming louder and louder...Just like the squeaky bass drum pedal in Since I've Been Loving You from Led Zeppelin... |
DLCVinnuendo 10.03.2013 08:53 |
the album version is very strange, the single remix makes new life, a nd it is the definitive version of the song |
john bodega 10.03.2013 11:33 |
"Just like the squeaky bass drum pedal in Since I've Been Loving You from Led Zeppelin" Except that's in an actual good song, and it's awesome. |
Karfan 11.03.2013 10:52 |
Yes it is indeed. Are you implying that Pain ... is not good? |
waunakonor 11.03.2013 12:35 |
Yup. |

DLYH was far better as ADRRFMD and I'm livid it wasn't on the AKOM 40 reissue. I don't mind PISCTP, a bit of light Europop. |
