Hey I have to make an audition tape in about a month and last two I've made have sucked ass cause the guy controling the mics and all is the choir director at my church and he made me put the mic WAY too close the the violin so it sounded all wrong and oh it was an aweful expiriance. So has anyone got an idea what I could do to get a better picture of my playing? If I win this, I will get a full scholarship for camp this summer which is quite a lot of money!
I can't give you any help as such, but I can offer this sage counsel:-
Never be in a room on your own with a choir director. Have no doubts that 'bum notes' will take on an entirely new meaning if you give him half a chance.
On t'other hand, if it's a woman, try grabbing a handful of bosom - she'll probably be glad of it.
you're not helping! :-) lol flashy if you just knew our choir director you would see how funny that is! he is a guy. But my accompanist and my mom were in the room too.
Depends on the equipment you are using, I think trial and error is the best way, keep trying different mic positions until you get the best result.
The best way would be in a large hall with three or four mics around the room and close-in, then mix them on a small four-track maching until you get the best balance, if you had an effects machine as well you could then add reverb.
If no access to this type of equipment, then just try playing the same peice over and over moving the mic around each time until you get the best result, I would suggest you need to get some of the 'live' atmosphere for the room as well to give it a bit of depth.
Good luck
hey thanks for replying. The room I was using the last two times was a very large, very dead room - a wierd shaped sanctuary with lots of blue carpet. I just remembered my youth orchestra director said I could come to the office and Bruce (our business manager) would record me. I don't know how good he is with this kind of stuff but I will give him a try for sure. I will remeber your suggestions and now the main thing is I need to practice my music. *yay*
