I was just wondering if anybody here saw that 'sitcom' 'Doctors and Nurses' last night? Why, why, WHY can't we produce any good sitcoms anymore??? They all seem shit recently. Although we did have Peep Show, that was very good I thought, and in fact someone from there was the only good point of that thing last night. I can't remember his name but I like him, he's a good actor.
I wasn't expecting much when I sat down to watch it but really, come on people! Can't anyone write a good sitcom? All we've really had in the last three or four years (new stuff, this is) is The Office, Peep Show and Pheonix Nights. Unless I'm forgetting something? Oh, yes. 'Orrible on BBC2. That's what I'm forgetting. YES! I should bloody forget it, it was crap. "'Orrible on BBC2", that sums it up for me: just snooker, darts and rubbish comedy (except Little Britain). Can't no one come up with another Fawlty Towers but set in an appartment or somewhere??? I've got an idea - two brothers, they're market traders....oh, no, I think someone's done that. Uhmm....three priests on an island off the coast of Ireland...what? That's been done, damn. Uhmm, alright - a failed television presenter...uhm, he's rubbish so he's forced into working radio, we run a huge series on him where he's presenting the sport on a news series then gets his own chat show, and he can have an assistant called Lyn....what? That can't have been done. Fecking hell.
Huh. Comedy now-a-days, eh? Rubbish! Television, that's rubbish too! It's all rubbish! But ranting and complaining - brilliant!
See you all later.
I believe that Sean Connery, quite rightly, would refer to them as 'shitcoms'.
Just about the only thing worth watching at the moment is 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet'.
There's a fair amount worth watching at the moment I'd say. not shedloads, but a few good bits and pieces. The aforementioned "Auf Wiedersehn, Pet" and the sublime "Little Britain" ('I want that one!'), the new run of "Dalziel and Pascoe", Paul Abbott's latest drama "Shameless", RTD's new drama "Mine All Mine" is up next month so hopefully it should be up to his usual high standards... New series of "State of Play", "Jonathan Creek" and "Spooks" are all due up later this year as well.
Little Briatain (IMO) is the only good thing on TV (full stop) at the moment, total shite apart from that! And I must bow down to Mark walliams and Matt Lucas for such a fantastic and fresh comedy!Love 'em!!
Little Britain is fantastic. All of the characters are ace but Dafydd and the wheelchair-bound bloke and his helper stand out ("yeah I know").
Anyway I missed Doctors and Nurses I watched a far better programme on Channel 4 Shameless got into it very quickly, a blistering first 30 minutes, and enjoyed it.
I saw Doctors and Nurses, not very good :( all jokes heard before and just no spark to it
Why cant we churn out decent comedy shows anymore, we were good at it
"Shameless" was class wasn't it Banquo? I had expected it to be very grim, and although it had that gritty quality to it, it also had a hell of a lot of humour and charm, which I hadn't expected. I'd thought the father would figure a lot more - given all the pre-publicity, and the fact that he did the opening monologue - but I suppose it's going to be something on an ensemble piece.
I heartily advise anyone who missed the first episode to tune in next week.
I'm liking Manchild very much at the moment. That follows Frasier and Jonathan Creek on Monday nights so I can never go out.
Does anyone else think that Manchild is any good? Or am I just very much mistaken and it's tosh? Opinions please.
sounds like something I would like to watch.
Have no idea if it's in the USA though
no cable or satilite at my house.
But I love the notion of people letting go of their inhabitions about how you are supposed to conduct yourself at whatever age.
I think the phrase "act your age" is bullshit and so damn stifling.
Manchild was OK but much was made of the likes of Nigel Havers, Don Warrington and Anthony Head being cast against type, i.e., posh blokes, and saying words like "fuck" and "wank"!!!
"New" sitcoms today are crap. As much as I love it and watch it, it can't be good when a 20-year-old episode of Only Fools and Horses shown often as a schedule filler, wipes the floor with the competition in the ratings.
"New series of "State of Play", "Jonathan Creek" and "Spooks" are all due up later this year as well."
- Wow! Did you just say this? When's the new Jonathan Creeks due?
Well there'll only be three of them. Season Four part B, as it were, the three Renwick didn't write in time for the last lot. No idea when they're due - Autumn would be my guess though.
