Just to let you know how narrow-minded some people around me are. My friend Tina told me this story yesterday: She was in the car with our friend Marcus and Queen came on the radio. Marcus turned it off imediately and said: "Queen... I hate them!!!" Tina asked: "Why?" Marcus said: "Because their singer was gay!...and because he's dead anyway!" It makes me want to strangle him the next time I see him! The music is, IMO the only reason to dislike a band, but not the sexuality and even less the fact that the singer is dead. Do you know people who hate Queen for other stupid reasons or have you ever heard more intolerant comments than this one? Or am I the only one who knows idiots like this bloke? |
Mayboy 12.01.2004 15:41 |
I hate that comment >( my mates who dont like queen say the same thing, or they say "U do know freddie was gay dont u" grrr naive ppl i wanna strangle them too but havent managed yet the nxt person better beware though lol and also cos ive got pics and stuff of freddie on my room ppl assume in gay too :( |

a good kick in the nuts is all you need to do and people tend to hate Queen, but it's not my fault i want to listen to them in the middle of the night really loud friends are getting used to them, as someone once said "everyone's a Queen fan, they just haven't realized", i like FM, George Michael, and some Pet shop boy songs, so they always think "gay", i coudln't care less |
Flashman 12.01.2004 15:58 |
The best thing to do in such circumstances is to gloat inwardly. When they get home, they will probably put 'Slipknot' on and shake their lonely brain cell to oblivion. While we listen to the genius of 'Seaside Rendezvous' and wallow in smug self-righteousness. |
Mr Mercury 12.01.2004 15:59 |
Thats what I got in college - "gay" comments all because I logged onto QZ everytime I used the Internet. Pathetic. |

SallyJ. 12.01.2004 16:10 |
narrow-minded is the right word for such people. and of course lack of good taste ;-)) and also, many people used to say things like "Queen....nah not my taste at ALL!" but time passed by...and it happens very often that those same people suddenly say "oh yeah Queen...well, they've got some good songs...." - afraid to admit they were wrong or afraid to say they really DID like Queen, for whatever reason. and not liking music because the man who sings is gay..well, I wonder where they go when they find out their hairdresser is gay. or their baker, the guy who repairs their car, the cassier in the supermarket, the insurance guy...etc! either way, it's their loss! (and their problem!) :) |
Mayboy 12.01.2004 16:12 |
agreed SallyJ :) I also think that being gay made freddie what he was, and why we love him :) |
Sonja 12.01.2004 17:00 |
"...afraid to say they really DID like Queen, for whatever reason." Yeah, I think that happens pretty often. It might be the age in some cases. I think quite a lot of younger people don't like to admit that they like Queen (songs) because it's not quite their scene or because Queen were an old band - And thumbs up for all the very young fans here, I think to have such a good taste in music at such a young age and interest in an old band that had their biggest successes when they weren't even born is remarkable! I also think what many people think of in the first place when they hear the name Queen - and that is really sad - is "Freddie - Gay - Aids". And THIS is so narrow-minded! Queen was a ROCK Group, it was all about music but some people just don't seem to be able to look a bit deeper into things. I don't care what other people say either. All my friends know that Queen are my favourite band and that I also have some Elton John stuff at home, that I like George Michael's old stuff, too, etc... And not so long ago I told everyone that I wanted Adidas boxing shoes like Freddie Mercury used to wear on stage. All I got was strange looks and comments but who cares? PS: I found them in London - 110 pounds. I bought cheaper ones that look similar... ;-) |
geeksandgeeks 12.01.2004 17:03 |

Some time ago I overheard some guys in my school talking about Queen. They were mentioning some songs and mostly saying how great they are. Of course there was this one guy who kept repeating all the time that Radio Ga Ga is so gay and that it's the worst song ever written, because it's soooo gay. I really had to force myself not to strangle him :-) |

Hmm...I hear things like that all the time (about Queen and Freddie). Talk about Brian May to someone and they say, "Who?" (Such is life in the South!) For the record, I've been an Adidas fan since the mid-70s. I liked the black and white design and wore them years before Queen made them famous. The boxing boots are no longer available, but there is a newer model that is actually a "yoga shoe" and looks like a knockoff of Fred's stage shoes! (Adidas are the only sports shoe that ever fit my feet properly anyway, could never wear Nikes or Reeboks.) Just ignore the comments of the ignorant that "have never heard of Queen". Solve the problem by asking this" "Do you ever hear this song at stadiums? |
L-R-TIGER1994 12.01.2004 21:50 |
The main reason they hate Queen would be because they are a bunch of deaph wank*rs. |
Kuku 12.01.2004 22:56 |
The worst comment I heard so far was... "Freddie sings like a girl." (Thanks to the person who knew his name -_-;;) And from my sister: "you get sick of Queen songs after a while" (she has about 8 songs, all in the same style because she picked the exact same vocal-styled songs from my folders. -_-) I don't even talk about Queen with those whom I don't consider worthy... And those dense people who talk about gay (and what's with the word? Gay means being happy. -_-) as if it were a big thing are the same as those people who talk about African- or Asian-Americans as if they were something other than Americans. |
iGSM 13.01.2004 02:58 |
Ugh, who HASN'T a friend like that? Even my own cousins have a go at him because he is gay. I couldn't really care because as soon as they had finished saying that they popped on some techno filth that made me tear my ears off. |

"sorry if it was written it was in the US, i couldn't find it" "btw Sonja aren't you from germany?" Yep, I live in Germany. I doubt that there are more narrow-minded people anywhere else in the world. At least I don't know any. Everywhere I go and meet people I think they're by far not as narrow-minded as some people here in Germany. Not even in America and I've been there quite often... And there's so absolutely nothing wrong with gay people! Especially gay men are so much nicer than most straight men. |
Mr. Scully 13.01.2004 08:17 |
I personally think that lesbian women are much more attractive than gay men. |
Guy 13.01.2004 08:25 |
"Especially gay men are so much nicer than most straight men" Most gay men have more feminine tendency than straight men, which is maybe the reason you identify with them more, as a woman. I think there was even a research about that. I ran into the "The singer was gay" thing as well, but I don't have friends who dislike Queen because of Freddie's sexual preference. I also ran into the "gay music" term on the internet, when people found out I like Queen & Elton John. |
anillusion 13.01.2004 08:30 |

And I thought it was all those sports teams in the 60s and 70s that made Adidas popular. My junior high basketball team wore Adidas in 69. Maybe Fred saw our team picture and was inspired. |
Hank H. 13.01.2004 11:09 |
"Yep, I live in Germany. I doubt that there are more narrow-minded people anywhere else in the world." Just your personal impression of course. Be careful with the term "anywhere else in the world", you know there are dozens of countries where homosexuality is forbidden. I rather have the impression that Germany is a very liberal country, and we don't have to look at the extreme examples. Look at your neighbours in Austria, also beautiful people but when it comes to narrowminded people in general... at least there are enough of them to elect Jörg Haider Hauptmann of Carinthia. But I see you didn't intend political discussion. "Especially gay men are so much nicer than most straight men." That's a shallow prejudice as well. Dasselbe in grün. "For the record, I've been an Adidas fan since the mid-70s. I liked the black and white design and wore them years before Queen made them famous." Thank god Queen never made any clothes / fashion popular. Not even Adidas shoes. We can't even make Freddie responsible for the existence of the moustache. But I do understand that some of their songs are reason enough to hate them, at least as long as you don't know their better songs. |
PD. 13.01.2004 11:55 |
Internet reviewer G. Starostin dislikes Queen for several reasons: He once met a Queen fan who has never heard about "Stairway To Heaven". He was envy for Queen having a more massive fan basis in Russia than some bands he liked better. He disliked Freddie's and the band's arrogance. He preferred lyrics to be meaningful or sincere (eg Bob Dylan). These made him writing some unfairly vicious album and band ratings with a fake touch of subjectivity. link |

I wasn't only referring to homosexuality though. It might be different in bigger cities, but here on the country where I live, people are very narrow-minded. A friend of mine is bisexual and even his mother got into trouble with another woman because she was talking bad about her son. I don't want to generalise, I'm just talking about the experiences I have made and the impression they gave me. |

Queen can be hated by people who can't understand the geniality of our 4 musicians. so people pick some "details" and exclude from considerations the superb music they created. Nowadays talking about queen is like talkng about a legend of modern and contemporary music...QUeen covers 2 generation of people, now children born with parents who used to like Queen...i think that there will be a large number of "new" fans in 10 years. Anyway in my personal experience, i see many people that can sing We will rock you (at least try mispelling words ;) ) and everybody knows the chorus of we are the champions...but, for example, BoRhap is a "mysterious object": "Hu....funny this 'Galileo figaro!'...but who is singing?!?!"... :( and...oh yes...everybody knows "radio ga ga...radio goo goo" and "De do de de, de do de de"......so, sad to say, people has a very superficial knowledge about Queen.(at least in my area) Finally... yes...i have heard from some teenagers..."Freddie was gay, wasn't him?" |

Last year I had someone ask me if I had AIDS. When I replied, amused, "No...", they said "well why do you like Freddie Mercury then?" I sent it to a teen magazine and it was posted in the "Rude Moments" section! (I need to look for it to scan it in!) I passed it around to all my friends, and they all went, "Wow, that IS rude!" I joked back, "I should have just bled on them or something..." |

Don't you almost feel sorry for the people today that have to put up with Britney Spears, Justin Trousersnake, the dime-a-dozen "rappers" and all the other soundalike bands/singers? There is no more originality, no more inspiration. It's all cranked out of a big money machine -- everyone's in it for what they can make, not what music they can make! It used to be all about the music...once. Why else do bands like Queen have staying power and loyal fans who still listen to and buy their music in various forms, still attend fan club conventions and still spread the word on lists like this one?? Their music will be rediscovered for generations to come, and that fact makes me glad I'm still a fan after thirty-one years! |

I mean, you don't have to like the old stuff but you should at least appreciate it and show respect for all those older bands because they were the ones that influenced most of the great bands of today. This is where it all came from, the most original and most of all, the music back then was honest and real. 4 or 5 people got together and wrote and played themselves and nowadays half of the big ones out there get everything done for them. They're just there because they look good but they don't have a real talent. And yes, I don't know any band that did music as timeless as Queen did. To me, they were just the most perfect band on this planet. Almost unreal. I grew up listening to old stuff because my mum is also a big music fanatic and I guess I got that obsession from her. |

There are a suprising number of young people who are into Queen. We've been starved of good music for so long now, this I think is the first generation ( apart from back when there was a kind of Beatles revival in the late 70's) to go back to 'old' music, and its actually become fashionable, let alone acceptable, as so many people are doing it. The result, I hope, will be the formation of groups who can produce 'new' music with the style and quality of the 'old'. You may say I'm a dreamer, but i'm not the only one. At the moment we're still stuck in the stages of having a small number of groups taking advantage of this 'retro-rock' fashion (which is not bad thing in itself, but won't last long), but gradually 'novelty' acts (and I am NOT including the Darkness under that label, as they seem to have the musical ability and dedication to their work to develop with each album and produce music with impressive origionality and range)will be filtered out and hopefully the 'yoof' of today will come to appreciate quality and authenticity. Increasingly, new acts mentioned in the little-heard mucical press are being adopted by the mainstream, and although at the moment they are getting attention for the wrong reasons (sadly people still allow themselves to be told what is good and what to buy, rather than deciding for themselves based upon personal taste, which has been the root casue for the blandness and inter-similarity of most of the 'current' acts, where they are not so much actually different from eachother in style but instead forced into 'categories'), hopefully more attention will be payed to bands for their music, and not how famous they already are, for whatever reason. Was it just me, or was that one hell of a big long sentence? |

Excellent post, Lisa. "Some people (teenagers) here sometimes react in a similar way: "Queen, they were a bunch of gays" but then they calm down and always say "Queen was one of the best rock bands"." Thank goodness for the Czech Republic. You won't see this happening in the States too often. "I personally think that lesbian women are much more attractive than gay men." Are you talking about womanly-looking ones, or the manly-looking ones? :) "He once met a Queen fan who has never heard about "Stairway To Heaven"." At least they weren't a fan of Britney Spears or Nickelback and hadn't heard of Stairway! "Noone can find a real reason to hate Queen so they all point the fact that Freddie was gay." In some cases you may be right, but far too many males are anti-gay because of an ego thing. If you like someone who's gay, your ignorant friends will probably think you're gay too. "It's their opinions if they don't like them. It's their problem, not yours." Sorry, I have to disagree. Teenagers make fun of other teenagers, and in their homophobic mindset, making fun of someone who likes a gay singer is a field day. |

As a young female fan (early 20's) who can only claim being a fan for the past 4 years and never had the chance to enjoy or see Queen while Fred was alive, I have found myself becoming more and more obsessed with getting information about them and filling my life with things that remind me of them. This means I will steer any conversation I have toward Queen almost without meaning to, so it's like my friends get the all-queen-station, all the time. However so far I haven't encountered any hostility or annoyance on their part. I think this MUST say something about my friends themselves b/c the area where I live (South US) is not known for it's open minds. I actually think I have started a couple of my friends on the road to becoming Queeniacs themselves: my best friend, on a whim, bought the GH 3-CD set to start out on, and I'm so proud. I also wear Queen tshirts proudly and often. Here is the newest purchase, courtesy of Ebay (lovely place) if anyone fancies a peek. link I guess the point of my reply is: Idiots beware, our ranks continue to grow! Much Love! |

The most common reason my freinds have for hating Queen was Freddie's sexuality. I'm 16 and have become a big Queen fan over the last year. Naturally I have been trying to get my other freinds to listen and appreciate Queen for their music and not hate them for Freddie's homosexuality. This however has become quite a challenge. It sickens me when they call Queen a "gay" band. Of course, they are the ones who are missing out on terrific music and the greatest band in the world (in my opinion). Other people's narrow minds and discrimination only results in their loss, not mine. |

There's really nothin much to say about it. It's all been said millions of times already.. I'm really sad when I see that, unfortunately, there are many people everywhere in this world who are so narrowminded, so ignorant and stupid. I can say my friends are great, none are queenfreaks like me, but many of them like Queen, and don't care at all about Freddie being gay. In another words, they are openminded and great folks. I could never be friend with someone who is so ignorant and such a bigot to classify people in any way and hate them just because they are not like everyone else. When I was younger I was very explosive and always got into trouble.. In my seventh grade one of my classmates said something very offensive about Freddie, I was wearing a Queen t-shirt and he said sth like this: "How can you wear that, that stupid Freddie was a faggot and fags are stupid and, my dad says they should all be killed!!!!" CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE THIS????????? In that moment I really wasn't in a mood for explanations and talking, so I just turned around and broke that asshole's nose. My hand hurted really bad for a few days, and I got some punishments from a headmaster, but it was worth every second of it:)) seeing that little bastard coming to school for a next few weeks with his nose swollen like a potato:))))))) I remember being afraid of my parents' reaction on me kicking that kid, but when my dad heard the whole story, he told me: "WHY DIDN'T YOU KICK HIM IN THE NUTS????? But nose is ok too." |

Good for your father! And good for you too... though I usually try to explain in a "softer" way why they were such a great band. Unfortunately, it's useless. My classmates... well, I guess they're so narrowminded they've never heard of Queen, therefore they have noidea Freddie was gay, so I never get annoyed wityh this subject at school. The thing's different for the older generation. I know somebody who was terriffied that her daughter was going to become lesbian because she was a Queen fan. And that's awfully wrong, I know her very well, she's not lesbian at all. |

...well even if she was a lesbian...does it matter? |
