Err... already found something I missed. The list doesn't include the You Don't Fool Me Mixes. |
Adam Baboolal 09.01.2004 23:50 |
Nice dude. Keep going. Are you compiling a site where audio clips can be listened to? Peace, Adam. |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 10.01.2004 00:23 |
I will put MP3's on my website when I get some webspace. I'm currently working on completing my site and including some audio clips. For example, I'll have a clip of how the 2 different edit versions of Funny How Love Is starts out. |

Just wanted to thank you for your site. Nice to see someone doing an updated version :) This special single version edit of 'Break Free' is intriguing. When you fade the single mix to that point it doesn't make for a very nice ending, but radio edits are often not very nice. I do one myself which comes to 3:46.. I simply re-create the album version's having the final verse start at the end of the electro-fart solo, with a slight crossfade. It works well. I'd like to point out something too.. I often hear the extended mix referred to as if it's extended from the single. In fact, the extended mix came first and the single is an edited version of it. This is obvious particularly by when the vocal starts, you can hear a bit of the wrong keyboard sustain since they did a straight edit rather than using a clean vocal track or an overlap. My versions sound much better, as I put a little reverb on the sustain so that it continues under the vocal and hides the original one. The single mix comes from 3 edits and a fade out of the extended mix. |

Indeed - nice to see a new version of this. Actually - I was planning a similar project over a year ago with Luis. We even got in contact with Greg Brooks, who said he would give our addresses to die-hard collector's who've got tons of unreleased stuff - so that we could make a complete as possible guide to the Queen recording sessions. Unfortunately none of the collector's ever replied - even though Greg was involved a bit. Then Luis quit the Queen scene and I simply didn't have time for all the designing & scripting :-( Good luck with the site :) |

Pim, I saw that you collect GNR bootlegs too. I have a soundboard recording of their concert in Pittsburgh, PA (which I was at) if you're interested. It's MP3 sourced however. |
Whisperer 10.01.2004 18:56 |
I think we should ask John Deacon, I mean John S Stuart for a complete list. |
Pim Derks 10.01.2004 19:09 |
At the moment not Adam - I'm really busy with school and stuff. I already promised Darren to copy Rock In Rio 3 for him about two months ago and just today I found time to edit the silence parts etc. out (stupid mp3 - normally I hate MP3 generation bootlegs - but I can't be bothered to start trading GNR boots - I just download them :)) |
goinback 10.01.2004 19:14 |
Let me know if you want an MP3 for the US Edit of Radio Ga-Ga...I made one from my vinyl and it's floating around on the hub. Also I'm not sure if you're interested, but I think the Vanguard video of "Flash" uses an edited version of one of their other mixes. |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 10.01.2004 19:54 |
Pim - No need to trade, I'd be happy to send you the MP3's if you're interested. And I don't need the US edit of Ga Ga. I got a vinyl rip of it some time ago and remastered it. Actually I think I've shared it for quite some time in the hub now. Thanks though. The only edits I need now are the ones that I have listed in that first post. I think the Bo Rhap one will be the hardest to find. It's also easily mistaken for a fake BoRhap edit that's readily available on pretty much any file sharing program. |

Whisperer - No doubt that John knows :) |
Adam Baboolal 11.01.2004 10:36 |
"I got a vinyl rip of it some time ago and -remastered- it." Sure you did... |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 11.01.2004 21:55 |
Well I don't know if remastered is a good term, but i cleaned up the pops and hiss with Cool Edit (same thing Buczko does with his MP3s from vinyl). |
Adam Baboolal 11.01.2004 22:40 |
Something I've tried to make clear on this forum before - Re/mastering is more than what most think it is. The term 'to master/remaster' should be reserved for proper usage. Maybe, I sound harsh. But it's something I do and I don't like the term to be thrown around. You cleaned your vinyl sound up. That's more to do with personal taste. It's cool, though. :) Peace, Adam. |
Penis - Vagina 11.01.2004 23:23 |
Technically if you're taking the best copy of a sound available and improving the quality, you're remastering it. Considering some of the commercially released crap that passes as 'remastered' and the fact that individuals have access to digital software that's just as good (or the same) as the 'pros' use, indeed one can produce commercial quality work. I've got at least one CD which contains a track taken from vinyl (a disco compilation) which is not a bootleg by any means. Looks like Queen has been using Waves for their DVD work. Anyone can buy that. It's a little pricey.. my software was only $500 (Sound Forge) and does some amazing things. Of course I hesitated to even name mine because I risk ridicule by a someone who fancies themself a 'pro'. Nobody who does something professionally likes to hear what they consider ordinary folks having the ability to do what they do, but it's a fact of life and continuously jumping to post everytime someone uses a certain term is simply nitpickery and annoying. As I recall, we had a lovely discussion about the ratios on GVH2 when I first arrived here which ended after you realized you had a TV setting wrong. You're not the all-knowing masterer extraordinaire of the universe Adam. Try to use some restraint :) |
Saint Jiub 12.01.2004 00:09 |
LOL - Adam and Sebastian sometimes fancy themselves as gods ... both of them have occasionally been jealous thorns in the side of John Stuart (the Queen "prophet" from Record Collector who unfortunately posts less often now as a result) |
Adam Baboolal 12.01.2004 06:25 |
Digital software is good, for sure. But hardware processing is still better. Unfortunately, I cannot afford such luxury. But software is now mixed with the process. "I risk ridicule by a someone who fancies themself a 'pro'." Just fancies? I have helped mix and master 3-4 retail cds of my friend's works. So, I don't just fancy myself as one. Please understand, I had to post that. "Nobody who does something professionally likes to hear what they consider ordinary folks having the ability to do what they do" No, the point is that he cleaned up an old recording. So, the term he used, remastered, was wrong. I simply corrected him. "but it's a fact of life and continuously jumping to post everytime someone uses a certain term is simply nitpickery and annoying" Actually, my first post didn't exactly jump on him for it. Now, did I? "As I recall, we had a lovely discussion about the ratios on GVH2 when I first arrived here which ended after you realized you had a TV setting wrong." First of all, there was nothing wrong with the tv setting. In fact, when watching dvd, it never changes. Secondly, the way I watch dvd is in the non-forced Aspect ratio way. So, it always looked like a stretched 16:9 pic. Therefore, when I viewed it on a computer, it was different. A simple misunderstanding... Video is mostly a hobby for me. Audio ain't. "You're not the all-knowing masterer extraordinaire of the universe Adam. Try to use some restraint :)" Like I mentioned above, my first post was restrained. But I saw that I had to explain what I had meant. But, audio is my work - I feel the need to help out where possible. I'm someone who can clear up the myths, e.g. A Beautiful Day dispute. And since it actually made AdamUnger realise, what's the problem? --- "LOL - Adam and Sebastian sometimes fancy themselves as gods ... both of them have occasionally been jealous thorns in the side of John Stuart (the Queen "prophet" from Record Collector who unfortunately posts less often now as a result)" Bullwinkle, I'm surprised. Jealous of JS? How so? That little dispute was down to his throwabout terms that would further confuse the audio issue, i.e. Four-track recording back in the BoRhap days!? And that's one of the lighter things he mentioned. I made a mere corrective response to someone's post and I'm ridiculed for it. Thanks guys. Peace, Adam. |
*goodco* 12.01.2004 11:07 |
To add to the list....some good versions of 'Gimme The Prize', 'I Want It All', and many instrumentals from 'The eYe'. The 'unreleased' but available BBC takes of 'Nevermore' and 'White Queen' (beautiful) A few from stracks ..'A Kind of Magic' and 'The Hero'...and videos 'FWBF', 'Invisible Man', and 'Sheer Heart Attack'. I've put together four 90 minute cassettes of 'alternate' tracks....minus the Rick Ruben, HR remix crap, and Why - oh - why clef type garbage Drive yourself even more 'bonkers'...add on the Wembley vid 'Tutti Fruitti' extra ending, or the cassette which excludes 'FWBF', and then you can also.... oy, it's a never ending prospect |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 12.01.2004 11:15 |
jgoodm - "it's a never ending prospect"... that's what makes it kinda fun :) Adam - No harm intended on my misuse of the term "remaster." You are correct and I'm not really doing any sort of mastering, just cleaning up. Ha, I didn't mean for such a debate to come of that. |
Adam Baboolal 12.01.2004 11:59 |
Thanks Adamunger. But I don't think it's you or I who is angry. Strange, huh? Peace, Adam. |
The Fonz 12.01.2004 16:50 |
I don't know if this counts, but the New Zealand 7" release of 'Tie Your Mother Down' contains that Brian MC Escher staircase guitar bit at the beginning. |

Got a new one for ya. Can't believe nobody else has noticed this.. There are two versions of the extended mix for 'I Want to Break Free'. The 12" Collection version is 7:18, while the Hollywood 'Works' version is 7:11. Not a major difference, but upon trying to sync them up, I've discovered that the 12" Collection version runs a little slower. Now, as to which version is correct, the instinct would be to blame Hollywood for running it too fast.. but I've done further testing. The Single mix on GHII (which is an edit of the extended mix) runs the same speed as the Hollywood version, (by running certain identical sections side by side) so my conclusion is that the 12" Collection is to blame for being mastered too slow since two rights make the 3rd wrong. LOL |
Penetration_Guru 13.01.2004 13:05 |
Why not try the original 12"? Shouldn't that automatically be the definitive version? I assume Mr Unger doesn't want solo stuff in his list too. I'll have a look through my old list and see if there's anything I can add. |
Penetration_Guru 13.01.2004 13:21 |
OK, here we go. Love Of My Life (Live Edit) - the Live Killers single has a slightly shorter version Radio Ga Ga, IWTBF, Hard Life, Hammer - all one minute edits on The Works flexi. 3 tracks got edited for the vinyl version of Live Magic A Message from Queen - 1989 fan club flexi (does this count as a release to you?) I Was Born To Love You (canadian edit) since you include Cd bonus tracks, what about "yeah" & track 13? btw, the Rick Rubin mixes are Hollywood mixes, so either don't include them, or do include all the others. I'd also coount the Trent Reznor mixes as Hollywood ones too, technically... |
Penis - Vagina 13.01.2004 14:10 |
Even if I had an original 12", there's a big margin of error as far as running at exactly the right speed when it comes to turntables :) However we don't even need to specify one as being definitive. They clearly run at different speeds so it can be left up to the individual as far as which is correct. It makes no difference to me. I'm perfectly happy if everyone else listens to the song at the wrong speed.. more power to 'em ;) I'm just an investigative type of guy. I notice something and test it out for my own benefit. I also enjoy recreating edits and I'm good at it. An example would be this U.S. edit of Radio Ga Ga. If I were to hear what they did (from vinyl), I would recreate it from a CD version rather than cleaning up the vinyl. I understand that not everyone has this ability though. |
Penis - Vagina 13.01.2004 14:25 |
To show how obsessive I am about edits, here are my gripes with the extended version of AKOM: At 2:48 when it cuts from the album version to the 'A Kind of A Kind Of Magic' stuff, there's a bad edit. The vocals which should sustain ("Done") are cut off and there's a slight pause before the new section starts. This makes it an obvious edit rather than a smooth transition. link On my personal version, I sustain the vocals a bit with reverb (always a handy tool) and the new section overlaps so it seems like part of the original mix rather than an edit. link Granted, most people wouldn't notice this.. but it's there. Then an even pickier gripe.. at 3:31 when the snares are repeated, the 4th one isn't edited in smoothly. It sort of fades in (visible in a wav editor) and sounds a little off. link link And don't even get me started about the volume level problems in the extended Radio Ga Ga ;) Sure, I need a life.. but I'm cursed with having a good ear for this stuff and it makes trying to simply enjoy music a living hell!. LOL |

I'm not familiar with I Was Born To Love You (canadian edit). What's different about it? |
goinback 14.01.2004 05:43 |
Actually if you had a turntable with a strobe to set the speed, then you could see which version of the CD the vinyl matches up closest to (though it still wouldn't match perfectly). Hopefully they didn't use the wrong master when making the GVHII DVD. If something isn't playing at the right speed, IMHO music sounds better a little fast than a little slow...otherwise, it sounds like it's dragging and "dead".... |
