I'm planning to buy this DVD, but the price is 35€, so I'd like to know a few things about it first: 1. Official (something like the WWRY DVD) or bootleg? 2. Picture quality? 3. Sound quality (5.1)? 4. Complete show? 5. Is an official (QP) release coming? The text on the DVD is n portugese, so I guess this is some Brazilian shit again. Just want to be sure... Thanks! |

buy another dvd, it isn't a great concert and i think it's incomplete, we can see a lot of these on e-bay |
Pim Derks 20.12.2003 07:02 |
1. Official (something like the WWRY DVD) or bootleg? # This DVD is not official, the source it's taken from (Laserdisc most probably) is. Officially released in Japan in the 80's. 2. Picture quality? # Haven't seen it, but since it was transferred from an official release it's probably very good. 3. Sound quality (5.1)? # Probably not, since 5.1 wasn't invented back in the 80's when the laserdisc was produced I think. 4. Complete show? # No, 90 mins edit I think. Full show is probably 20-30 mins longer. 5. Is an official (QP) release coming? # Don't think so. Queen weren't at their best during Thr Works tour, so Brian probably doesn't want to release it worldwide.... |

link I found this, but your personal experiences are still needed. |

Someone sells those dvd's on huuto.net constantly and they seem to go for under 20 euro at best. The DD 5.1 is merely pseudo-surround (at best) and not discreet. I don't have this title myself, but all I can say is..don't pay 35 euro for it. |
QueenSite 20.12.2003 08:00 |
I paid 20 euros for it, postage included. I think it's worth, it's a great show, quality is far better than Rio, for example, it's the best Works tour document |
Adam Baboolal 20.12.2003 08:31 |
Sound is the worst. If you're buying a music dvd, surely that's important? AVOID. |
FriedChicken 20.12.2003 09:30 |
the sound is afwul. You can hardly hear something except for the vocals and that god awful drums, and that god awful voice of spike who seems to be louder than Freddie. ...don't buy it for your viewing pleasures, buy it if you want to have it all |
Harry_queenrecordings 20.12.2003 10:21 |
I think awful is a big word to use for this sound. The ''overall'' soundquality is almost perfect but what a bit bad is about the sound on this show is that you can't hear the vocals very clear in most parts and Brian's guitar is also on a ''low background'' sound. About Roger's drum kit and Spike Edney's things are on most of the works tour and i also don't like it, i never liked the sound of AOBTD during the works tour concerts but this concert is like someone told already a nice document to have about the works tour, although..it is still not complete. |
FriedChicken 20.12.2003 10:30 |
if you can't hear guitars, the sound is awful. the quality may be good, but the soundmix is awful |
Adam Baboolal 20.12.2003 12:05 |
Agreed, Fried. A bad mix means plain BAD. Hugely disappointing. And yeah the synth stuff is more upfront than most of Brian's stuff. I think "awful" was a polite way of putting it. Peace, Adam. |

Who's knocking Rio? I think Rio would be a much better concert to release than Tokyo. Freddie sounded better there, and the band was just pumped to be headlining the Rock In Rio Festival. Of all the realisistic choices for a future DVD release, that would be one of the few. Milton Keynes is questionable, as we don't even know if they filmed that one in its entirety. Until I hear a better confirmation, I'll refuse to believe that the band brought camera crews to every show on the Hot Space tour. Rainbow may also be possible. Any other realistic suggestions? |
Whisperer 22.12.2003 01:24 |
So, that concert was released officially in Japan on Laserdisc and VHS. Is it likely that it will get an official release on DVD too? I've been offered this DVD for 25€. Should I take it? |
riku_queencdr 22.12.2003 02:35 |
I have this DVD and watched it maybe twice. There are not many Queen concerts available on video/DVD, at least in this picture quality, so I think it's worth 20€ but not 35€. I strongly agree that the sound mix is awful. I wonder who approved it and gave a permission to release it officially? Strange thing is also that the radio broadcast of this same show has much better mix. Brian's guitar is much more present and Spike's voice is in the background. Why on earth did they mix it like that for the Laserdisc release? The radio broadcast recording can be heard on the "La Fleur Du Mal" bootleg. The reason why Machines Or Back To Humans intro is missing, is that the host reads all the songs that Queen will play. The bootleggers probably wanted to leave that off, especially as the host reads them in very strong Japanese accent. The DVD release misses Dragon Attack and Brian's guitar solo, the radio broadcast misses only the solo. |

"Rainbow may also be possible." Raaaaaaaaaaaiiiiinboooooooowwww... *drools* |
proton 23.12.2003 05:00 |
I bought this one online from a Brazilian company through Ebay for 15 pounds approx. That is a good price for a great DVD like this one. Picture quality is near DVD because of its laserdisc source. And the sound is ok too. Ofcourse 5.1 surround is fake, but I knew that before I bought the disc and did not mind it :-) Since it's a bootleg, more than 15 pounds (about 23 euro's) would be overpriced. So don't pay more :-) |
Fenderek 23.12.2003 12:40 |
< Realistic or not, I would rather see the show that we still haven't seen, sth outside the Rio/Budapest/Rainbow circle... IF sth from those shows, complete Hungarian show or COMPLETE Raibow wouldn't be bad, but... I'm sure there are some other complete shows on film in archives. Something from 1975- 1978 era maybe...? Or maybe 1979...? Personally, I would LOOOOVE to see Hammersmith'79 on DVD |
The Real Wizard 24.12.2003 11:23 |
Yeah, I suppose the word "realistic" really doesn't suffice what could be on DVD, because we don't know what's in the archives. :P Apparently all three nights at Wembley Arena in 1978 were filmed. It'd be incredible if a compilation of those shows was put out on DVD. I have the incomplete audience recording of the third night, and the performance was incredible! |
Pim Derks 24.12.2003 11:40 |
"Apparently all three nights at Wembley Arena in 1978 were filmed. It'd be incredible if a compilation of those shows was put out on DVD." That would indeed be incredible, as Queen didn't perform at Wembley Arena in 1978 :-) |
deleted user 24.12.2003 12:50 |
my opinion is: buy it, but try to get it for 15€, not more. You can get it via online shops and/or ebay user, i paid mine 7,50€ + 5€ shipping. By the quality point of view, we are not talking about an official release, so Brian & C didn't add something to the rough japanese recording. The sound is not properly mixed, but i think it's a worthing document for everyone. Just a question for everybody: were the japanese cameramen drunk? cheers! |
QueenSite 24.12.2003 13:50 |
both this showe and the 1982 one were official releases in Japan (both on vhs and laser disc) . Queen don't have much control on their Japan releases I think, the 1982 performance in particular it's not brilliant. About the 1985 show, the sound is not perfect but it's still a must-have document. About Rio, well, it's butchered down to 60 minutes, camera work is not great, etc.etc. |
Adam Baboolal 24.12.2003 14:45 |
"the sound is not perfect but it's still a must-have document." Pray tell, why? If a bootleg radio mix sounds better, why buy the tarnished Japan version? Peace, Adam. |
deleted user 24.12.2003 19:44 |
"Pray tell, why? If a bootleg radio mix sounds better, why buy the tarnished Japan version?" uhm...maybe because...the bootleg radio mix can't offer images? :) may be, may be.. cheers! |
Adam Baboolal 24.12.2003 20:41 |
You just get the video and plaster the good audio over it. Come on... lol Peace, Adam. |

I bought the two Japan concerts on tape and they both suck! Bad performances, bad recordings, annoying audience. Avoid Japanese concerts. Earl's Court, Rainbow, Wembley, Montreal, Budapest, Hammersmith Odeon are all great concerts worth buying. The Japanese stuff sucks ass! |

You should listen to stuff like Osaka 79 & Osaka 85, Ogre_Battle :) |
The Real Wizard 27.12.2003 15:05 |
Well, if I based Japanese performances on the Tokyo 5-11-85 show, I'd think they all sucked too! :P You should definitely go for these shows, and I assure you, they will change your opinion: Kobe 4-23-75 Osaka 3-29-76 afternoon Tokyo 4-14-79 Osaka 4-20-79 Tokyo 2-13-81 Osaka 10-24-82 Tokyo 5-9-85 They're all easy to find in excellent sound quality, with the exception of Kobe, which is only very good sound. |
Daniel Duret 27.12.2003 17:48 |
I got the vcd version of this laserdisc some time back, and even that quality is quite good... so, even though its a bootleg, it will probably be a high-quality one. |
Pim Derks 27.12.2003 19:15 |
Where would you be without me Daniel :-) |
Ogre_Battle 29.12.2003 10:07 |
I agree, some of the cd japanese concerts are good, just not the ones they filmed. The Osaka show called Zoom on the bootleg, that one was pretty good. What I hate are the annoying ass Japanese girls SCREAMING into the bootleg recorders, "FREDDIE!!!" Damn, they annoy the shit out of me. |
The Real Wizard 30.12.2003 22:19 |
Yeah, that's the evening show in Osaka 76. Try tracking down the recording of the afternoon show of the same day, 3-29-76. The screaming girls are pretty distant from the music, thank goodness. |
