If you hop over to Brianmay.com you will see him mention that he has been listening to her in his car. He makes a statement that I wish I heard more often from the folks here. He listens to music 'without prejudice' which I feel is very important and something people only do with maturity, it is all too easy to right something/one off because it is not cool to like them, well for me Queen has made me listen with new ears to all kinds of music that I'd probably never have got into, as a result my collection is very wide, from classical to pop, from Abba to Led Zep, from Jazz to Metal, so all I'm saying here folks is listen with freah ears, remember people spend hours and hours creating what we hear on the radio, and they all deserve a chance, even if it's not your thing try to find something that you feel was worth all the effort. |

You've made me thought. I find you're right men. It happended something similar to me, but I must admit I've got prejudices and I don't give a shit of those who doesn't seem to be cool to me. But well, all is relative. Anyway, I like your point. |
iGSM 12.12.2003 10:06 |
Does that include rap? |
ogre t raylot 12.12.2003 10:06 |
Motion seconded. Classical, Rock, Pop, Country, Bluegrass all get regular airplay at ogre towers. |

You are absolutely right: we should listen to music without prejudice but it should be allowed to come to the conclusion that the music is crap. Of course, when I would produce a million dollar commercial with Britney, I might change my mind about the value of her music. A big LOL at the "simplicity and honesty" of her song "Not a girl .. not yet a woman" - Brian must have missed a lot when he makes such a statement:) |
Togg 12.12.2003 10:16 |
Well I have to admit you are not gonna get much of an argument from me about Rap, but my point is not saying you have to like everything, just don't slag off stuff because it is trendy to do so, listen to it and make a valuable comment rather than trash for the sake of it. |

No prejudices of course. That is something Brian seems to (re-)discover very lately in his life. Still I think he should broaden his tastes in other directions because this is clearly no art but commercial crap and nothing else, and that has nothing to do with prejudices. Therefore I can only shake my head at Brian's comments on Britney, because "not a girl, not yet a woman" surely doesn't deserve any respect, no matter how much time she spent for it. I don't fucking care if it's "rock'n roll" or not, that whole attitude is also not my cup of tea, but I don't understand how a grown-up can listen to that song and not cringe. |

What's Bluegrass? |
Togg 12.12.2003 10:41 |
Well you have to be over eighteen to smoke it! |

Bluegrass? try using this link excellent database about music, well worth trawling through if you wish to learn more about an artist, or genre of music for instance: link or link :-) |

AMG is a good site, info-wise. I just never saw bluegrass in there. Anyway, thanks. |

It's on there. It's not to everyone's taste though. :-) |

BRITNEY!! I cannot understand you Mr. May! You are just too forgiving! BRITNEY!!! SHEESH! He must have gotten into Emily May's CD collection somehow... LOL!!! Krizzy ;o) |
Matti 12.12.2003 11:21 |
Britney....hm...I don't know what to say to that....... |
Penetration_Guru 12.12.2003 11:30 |
If you haven't heard Bluegrass, try hearing familiar music in that style I believe Metallica, AC/DC & Fat Bottomed Girls have all been done in that style. Perfectly listenable. Me, although I think Eminem is a tosser on a personal level, I still think he makes creative use of songs to make something new, and if his sense of humour was allowed through I think he'd be even better. My point is, we all like and dislike different things. Which is nice. ANother example - Brian has previously recommended The Donnas and Avril Lavigne. Avril Lavigne is a one-hit wonder being thrust at us by a huge marketing machine. The Donnas make great songs. I know this because I listened objectively. |

hmm, Britney *drooling* |
geeksandgeeks 12.12.2003 15:48 |
If Brian wants to listen to Britney, fine by me. She's pretty harmless. If he were listening to Eminem, I'd get worried. Actually, i think Roger does listen to Eminem. |
Mr.Jingles 12.12.2003 19:11 |
Pop was good back in the 80s when there were artists who at least wrote and produced their own music. Most pop acts today are fabricated artists who sell an image rather than their music. Michelle Branch is one of the few today who still makes good rock/pop. |
Adam Baboolal 12.12.2003 21:07 |
"You are just too forgiving! BRITNEY!!! SHEESH!" Forgiving? As if she's someone we should all despise for the music she's involved with. You sound like NME on Queen. "For me, Christina Aguilera has done much better music, being a sexy woman, without needing to expose herself" Er... She's good, but come on. Peace, Adam. |

My favourite topic to discuss!!! I totally agree with you and Brian on this one. I grew up listening to stuff that wasn't cool. Queen is the best example. When I was 10 and started to like Queen no one in my school or around me, except of my mum, liked Queen. I used to wear a Freddie T-Shirt at school and the kids would say to me: "Eeeeehh, you like Queen! You're shite!" The older I got the less it bothered me. Here in Germany, most people are very narrow-minded when it comes to music. I've always been interested in older bands. When I was 14 I got into The Clash. They remained my favourite band, along with Queen until this day. If you tell someone here in Germany that you like The Clash, no one knows who you're talking about. You mention Joe Strummer, they're completely lost. 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' might remind them.... None of my friends likes Queen that much. They dig the new stuff, regardless what kind of music it is. But it has to be new. Old stuff is uncool! The other day a guy told me: "I hate Queen!" I said: "Why?" He said: "Cos the singer was gay. And he's dead anyway." That made me wanna strangle the guy, I tell you! I have no problem to admit to others that I love Queen, The Clash, The Beatles and also Elton John, some country stuff, Elvis... whatever! I enjoy listening to Take That sometimes cos some songs were really cool! I love Robbie Williams! I don't like Hip Hop, but I think Eminem is a genius! I don't like Madonna's music but I really admire the woman for what she's done althrough her life! I don't like J-Lo's music but I also think she's a very hard working woman. And she's good at what she does. BUT what I don't like is the fact that today music has become a mass production. Things like pop idol are so fucked up and not just that. There are so many bands/singers who don't deserve the success they have! Just because the look good, can sing a bit and can dance doesn't mean that they are musically talented! Anyone of us could make a #1 hit today if we wanted to. Technic can manipulate our voices so that they sound good in the end. So in these cases, the effort behind the music is not made by the stars, but by other people who do it all for them. And the charts are full of that crap! At least here in Germany. And they get all the money and the success for things they haven't even done themselves and taking the place of people who make real honest music! Many of these bands who really put an effort in the music by writing and playing themselves don't get supported enough anymore. They don't even get the chance to let the people know what they've done. I know a band that's kind of successful (or at least was successful) especially in the UK, and I know what happened to them. The record company, a big one, doesn't support them and I know how hard the guys work on their music! They deserve a little more attention I think. To me, Britney Spears is one of many. There's no exclusiveness anymore because one sounds the other, and soon there are a few of them just because one has had a big success. The "re-birth" of rock (how it's often written in mags) came with The Strokes. Now just look how many "The" bands there are and how many of them sound like The Strokes or at least try to. This is what annoys me. But in many cases you can't even blame the "artists". It's the record companies who fuck it all up! But I definitely admire those who work hard and I recognize their talent even if I don't like their music. Amen. LOL PS.... wow that was long... |

I will listen to anything if it has a tune I'll listen. For instance I loved Sweet Dreams My LA Ex by Rachel Stevens its probably my record of the year along with Where Is The Love? Abba, The Jam, Kylie, Billy Bragg, Queen just a few of my favourites. |
The Man On The Prowl 13.12.2003 05:14 |
As the great Francis Bacon used to say, prejudices cannot be eliminated, they exist and they will always do. The only thing we can do is being aware that they exist and try to dominate them! Anyway, I think you are all right, any song should have the chance of being listened as a song. And then of course anyone of us could make a #1 hit today if we wanted to, but almost noone could write songs, especially music, like Queen, Elton, Beatles did. For me creativity and songwriting come before performance quality. As to Britney... I fully understand Brian's praises of Avril Lavigne, I can partially understand the ones for Pink, but I cannot understand the ones for Britney, unless he is her producer :-) But ok, I have different tastes and I respect his ones... and Brian will always stay THE BEST for me. |
goinback 13.12.2003 06:13 |
I actually think Christina Aguilera has talent...she writes her own songs for one. She needs to distance herself from the Britneys and Justins of the world one of these days. Britney didn't used to write her own songs, but I don't know if she does now or not. Obviously if Britney sucks, but puts other peoples' songs on her album, then her album could still be good even though it has her name on the cover. |

I said: "Why?" He said: "Cos the singer was gay. And he's dead anyway." That made me wanna strangle the guy, I tell you!" Ah yes... I get that a lot too, at school... Just because our dear Freddie was gay, doesn't mean he was a bad person, or singer in general! Brian listens to Britney Spears? Now, I'm freaked out! lol... just a little... I stopped listening to Britney when i was about 11 or so...lol and... i dont really care for her, or her music but if Roger can listen to eminem, then hell, Brian can listen to Britney Spears |
