When you buy the soundtrack, the T shirt, the programme, the mug, etc, are you bombarded with adverts for "proper" Queen product, in the same way that those of us buying "proper" product get the musical rammed down our throats.. "If you have enjoyed this Live At Wembley DVD, why not pay a king's ransom to hear the same songs mucked about with and linked by jokes of equal vintage?" I had this thought today looking at the tasteful WWRY advert plastered on every Queen DVD... ANother thought then occurred - if the musical is so good, surely word of mouth is sufficient and there is no need for what appears to be a desperate half price offer lasting over a year now? Or is anyone stupid enough to book during the week and NOT say "DVD offer" being justly fleeced for twice what they think they could legitimately charge? OK, that last bit is just rude, but what about the first question. Shouldn't these people be buying GH1 every time they turn up? |

Musical? |
Sir Archie 'Tiffany' Leach 02.12.2003 18:35 |
Indeed after buying the programme, T-shirt (never got round to wearing it), mug and WWRY dental floss I got thousands of leaflets saying 'buy Queen's Video Hits on DVD' and 'don't be a lemon get Video Hits 2 for half price'. I thought you must be mad to buy 'unofficial' musical merchandise not 'proper' musical product. I bloody well went out and bought those DVDs for £8 each. How I laughed at those who paid over a tenner for this 'tagged on to the musical' Queen merchandise. |
Dicky Hart 03.12.2003 05:48 |
The half price offer is for matinee tickets only, and as anybody who goes to musicals, matiness are usually crap, cos the understudies get a chance and everyone is hungover from the night before. IMHO Im probably wrong, but thats just my experience of them. |
Spiderleg Synthia 03.12.2003 05:59 |
If there's a niche for capitalisation, it will be exploited. You can't blame Queen for making money out of their own property, even if their tactics do seem crass. |
YourValentine 03.12.2003 06:36 |
There are no adverts for the musical on my DVDs. Maybe it's only on British products? |
ogre t raylot 03.12.2003 07:21 |
"There are no adverts for the musical on my DVDs. Maybe it's only on British products? " Not even the 'subliminal' one on the Live @ Wembley DvD? |
Guy 03.12.2003 08:16 |
I bought my DVDs in the US, nothing on them either. |
Penetration_Guru 03.12.2003 08:31 |
It probably is just UK editions which push the Uk musical at us. But it's not matinees - Mon-Thu evening performances (there aren't any matinees at all are there?). |
YourValentine 03.12.2003 08:33 |
Which 'subliminal' one? I have't seen the WWRY logo anywhere on the DVD but perhaps I missed something? |
ogre t raylot 03.12.2003 08:41 |
"Which 'subliminal' one? I have't seen the WWRY logo anywhere on the DVD but perhaps I missed something? " Brian being interviewed whilst sat at the piano. |

The musical is quite good actually, why do people slag it off when they havn't even seen it. It's success speaks for itself... |
Adam Baboolal 03.12.2003 08:52 |
I think he means the songbook sitting at the piano. hehehe There's nothing wrong with their ads. Big deal, it's marketing and basic business. If you don't like it, fair enough. But others do. Peace, Adam. |
YourValentine 03.12.2003 09:15 |
Yes I missed that, obviously :-) I admit I did not pay much attention the interviews. |
Mr. Scully 03.12.2003 11:07 |
"why do people slag it off when they havn't even seen it" I think people don't criticize the musical itself, they (me included) criticize the extremely heavy advertising of it. |
Penetration_Guru 03.12.2003 11:39 |
I haven't seen it at the theatre, however I watched about half of it on video at the convention and my original expectation that it was a cover band nailed to a plot was confirmed. Except for the plot. I couldn't see one. I heard some old jokes, each of which had an entirely predicatble punchline. So, I don't like it on grounds of 1. it's low level of entertainment 2. disproportionate amount of time, energy and promotion that is lavished upon it Now, I understand some of you like it. Fair enough. Enjoy. Just don't ask me to, expect me to, or criticise me for not liking it. Finally (you wish!), don't use the "millions of people have seen it, they can't all be wrong" line. Millions of people... - voted for Hitler - buy The Sun every day - commit crime - look at images of women being gratified by farm animals |

< Wednesday matinee on the last Wednesday of each month. |
jeff payne 1680 05.12.2003 14:03 |
I saw the so called matinee in October on a tuesday night with the understudys i.e Tony Vincent Hannah Jane-Fox, etc and the understudy bloke on guitar for bo-rap what was his name oh yeah Brian May not a bad understudy but needs to play a bit more.. and the tickets cost me £20. 2nd time Ive been and its still fab. |
Rich Tea 05.12.2003 15:05 |
I wonder whether they are having the same discussions on the Abba, Rod Stewart & Madness boards? For some people what ever happens in the name of Queen now will not live up to the glory days and that is fair enough. I went I clapped, I cryed and I had a bloody good nights entertainment enjoying the music of my favourite band - It was quite breathtaking. My kids who are far too young to have ever seen Queen really enjoyed it too so if its introducing the music to a whole new audience then that can't be too bad can it! |
Penetration_Guru 05.12.2003 17:36 |
So what you're saying is that it cost you £60 and a trip to the theatre to get your kids to listen to Queen music, and even then it was sung by someone other than Freddie? Wouldn't one evening with GH1 & 2 have done the trick? |
Rien 05.12.2003 18:06 |
The musical has matinee on Saturday's. |
Rich Tea 06.12.2003 03:36 |
The musical is far more interactive and spontanious than watching a DVD. Oh the wife came as well so it cost us £80 about the same as if 2 of us had gone to watch a Premier League game on a Saturday! I'd say WWRY is excellent value for money - but only having seen it on video you wouldn't have sampled the atmosphere would you. If you go expecting or wanting a Queen Concert of course you would be disappointed take it for what it is and enjoy it for what it is an excellent night out |
Banquo 06.12.2003 03:49 |
I've seen the musical at the Dominian and I must admit it was a good night out, what more can you ask for? But I agree that all this advertisting of it on the Queen DVD's is a bit too much. |
Penetration_Guru 06.12.2003 20:06 |
£40 a ticket to the Premier League? Another Chelsea fan, I see. If I went to the musical, I would have been expecting a cover band with a plot. "Atmosphere" is provided by a theatre full of people laughing at crap jokes and applauding crap renditions of good songs. Sorry, I remain unconvinced. I bet you're surprised... |
Rich Tea 06.12.2003 20:22 |
P G you obviously don't go to many Premier League matches £25 each for Tickets average price £7.50 Car Park £3.50 1 Drink & £2 a Pie! Chelski - Do me a favour PMSL |

I looked at Man UTD prices just for the fun of it thats like my weekely wage spent on a 90 min game, lol |

Parking on the street - free Bringing a sandwich - free I hope this explains my confusion. William, I doubt youy were looking at standard tickets. |
Uglyduckling 12.12.2003 07:44 |
I used my £20 ticket offer to go last night. It was absolutely amazing and the place was packed to the rafters. That doesn't smack of desperation to me. I can;t wasit to go again, which I would not be able to do were it not for the ticket offer, and the same goes for my five friends who have been converted to Queenism as a result of the trip. |
Penetration_Guru 12.12.2003 11:12 |
Rich Tea, which team charges £7.50 to park? With more and more clubs redeveloping out of town, this should be on the decline. Southampton, Bolton Boro Leiecester, Man City all new stadiums. Newcastle fans all walk naked to the ground from the city centre, Leeds' ground is out of town anyway, Liverpool, Everton, Utd, Villa don't charge that much. I'm thinking yours must be a London club. In which case couldn't you take the tube? I'm not having a pop, btw, I'm curious as to who gets away with ripping off their own customers like this. |
