As we all know Freddie considers lipsynching a lack of respect towards the crowd (and it really is), and on numerous ocassions he bashed a lot of artists who constantly lipsynch while singing live.
To my amazement I found Freddie lipsynching at the performance from the Montreux Pop Festival shown on the GVH2 DVD.
What do you guys think about that?

I noticed he did it in lots of videos!
WATC
WWRY
BO RHAP
and the list goes on
The lip synching was forced on them at Montreux, thus the reason Freddie makes it very obvious that he is doing it. Both Montreux performances and the San Remo appearance were mimed.
Miming for promotional videos is, of course, an entirely different matter.
It's pretty obvious that Fred is taking the piss out of the idea by not bothering to sing into the mic at the right time. etc. etc.
Interesting footage to see cause I'd never seen it before, but not something I'll return to anytime soon.
"WWRY is an edit of two different shows, thus the reason for being out of synch at times."
And, of course, it is out of synch because it is overdubbed. listen to TYMD - how many Freddies can you hear singing? :)
Ever since I saw Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" (atrocious spelling the fault of Prince) video, I have decided that video lip synching is really okay.
It sounds to me like during what you all have described, he tried the sulking approach. The thing that drives everyone else up the wall about it is that really, he was behaving perfectly. No one can say to him, "stop doing exactly what we told you to!" One could say, "stop being so obvious about it", but I can think of a multitude of flippant responses to that guaranteed to make a person start ripping out hair.
i thought they were supposed to lipsync to videos also. Didn't freddie lipsync to the live performance with monserrat caballe also, i can't quite remember where i heard that. Can anyone tell me if it is true? thanks
"Freddie was really pissed, according to Phoebe's book"
He was pissed because the playback tape was running slightly too slow (or too fast?) which the audience didn't notice though.
Well, because Queen was such a visiually pleasing band to watch (their great lights, outfits, decoration, and physical involvement) not singing live might not take too much from the performance, it would be dissapointing, but bearable.
ALL artists lip-synch to pop videos!!
FFS, how else can they do it?
Thought everyone knew that?
It's all stop start in some of the most 'un-acoustic' environments.
How on earth can they sound like a studio recording?
Even some scenes in movies require studio over-dubs from the actors over their own voices.
His appearance at the "Vier Gegen Willi" - Show was also playback and he tried to compensate it by dancing around like mad and totally overdoing his emotional mimic.
"FFS, how else can they do it?"
REM didn't do it until 1991, when something convinced Michael Stipe that it wasn't cheating.
That, however, is beside the point.
One lip-synching session isn't going to kill anyone. It may be cheating, but we can throw the blame for that on whoever thought up that particular doozy.
