Ok we were all naive when we first got into Queen so this topic is for u to post those thoughts that u had on the band before u started knowing them more, buying thier albums.....etc. in my case : 1- I used to think that Roger was Freddie. 2- I thought that Freddie wrote BR before his death and after i knew that it was written 21 years before it I thought that he prophecised his death. 3- I also used to think that freddie got aids from having sex with bitches. "never imagined that he was gay" 4- I used to think that "Bohemian" was a word that freddie ivented!! I've got alot more but i can't remember them since that it's been so long ago ...... |
Saffron Caribou 19.11.2003 20:35 |
I used to think that John's surname was Pecan. Then later on I learnt it was Deacon :-P We all have been thru the naive period ^.^ |
RainMustFall 19.11.2003 21:06 |
I used to think Freddie was Roger too. Maybe Freddie just sounds like a blonde? And, I used to be confused on whether Bo Rhap was their last song or their first; and then when I saw the four-head pic, I was further confused, thinking that the song was on Queen II... oy. |
CatGurl14 19.11.2003 21:49 |
I got all the members mixed up except for Freddie hehe and I didn't know they sang You're My Best Friend. There are a few others I'm sure but I can't recall them at the moment. |
Saint Jiub 19.11.2003 22:06 |
My mom told me there was another meaning for Queen other than royalty. I thought Freddie being gay was a promotional act. He obviously could not possibly be gay with Mary at his side. I thought John wrote The Night Comes Down and Funny How Love Is because John had to write at least one song per album (8-tracks did not show writer's credits). |
Matti 19.11.2003 23:18 |
I used to get them all mixed up also. |

I used to think 'We Will Rock You' was SUNG by Brian May, and feeling disappointed and confused after seeing a broadcast on VH1 about Freddie dying (they showed the 'We Will Rock You' video). As "News Of The World" was the only cassette tape I owned at the time of Freddie's death, I thought the band would constantly end shows with 'My Melancholy Blues'. I asked my dad if Freddie died while performing the song on stage, but he sort of gave me a look and said no. And not really a misconception, but when I got "The Game" and I listened to 'Rock It (Prime Jive)', and then looked at the booklet at Roger's picture, I always thought he was smirking because he knew he wrote such a great song. |

My mum has always been a big Queen fan and told me a lot about them and that's how I got into them so I knew pretty much from the beginning. I was 9 or 10 and didn't really understand english. I think I posted this in my first post that I never understood the words correctly. I thought "It's A Hard Life" was "It's A Horse Life" and there were so many other songs I used to sing along but I sung the words the way I understood them - completely wrong. And I thought GH 1 and 2 were the only albums they had released cos they were the only ones that my mum gave me to listen to. (I didn't really get this "Greatest Hits" thing, and I didn't really care). When I finally found out that this was really just a compilation of their greatest hits I was upset and started to collect their albums. I read a lot about Freddie and aids shortly after he died and felt so sorry for his parents and wanted to write them a letter to say that I'm sorry. I probably wanted to write it German or Portuguese as these were the only languages I could speak back then. |

When I started buying records being 10-11, was really, really angry when after purchasing GH and GHII it turned out that there was nothing new there and that they repeated the songs on few albums. Didn't know what a compilation is... |

Growing up in the seventies, I practically grew up with Queen, so when I became a "fan" in 1980, I pretty much knew who was who....though it was about that time I started buying their albums finding out You're my best friend was their song.....I always liked the song, never realised it was Queen.... |
Sonja 20.11.2003 05:52 |
Ah, another thing I remember. As I was only 9 or 10 and was starting to get interested in good looking boys and most important: singers and famous people had to be good looking!!! When I first saw a picture of Freddie I thought: God, he was damn ugly for a singer! |
Robin 20.11.2003 07:06 |
When I got into Queen back in the early 70's, I was always afraid that Roger would quit because Freddie's "poofy" songs did not seem like something he would like to play. He always struck me as the bad boy rocker who would hate Good Old Fashion Loverboy. My bad. Hey, I was like 15! Little did I know how commited they all were! |

Being a naive teenager, I was disappointed that Queen II didn't match the kickass performance I saw in the spring of 74. Being even more naive, I wondered why John grew a beard for the SHA album cover pic;-) |
Mr Coolest Cat 20.11.2003 08:48 |
When i first got into Queen in 1973, i thought they were the best band i'd ever heard, guess what?, i still think the same today. |
Sebastian 20.11.2003 09:02 |
I also thought Brian sang We Will Rock You, until I saw it at Live Aid Many bands I knew before (Van Halen, U2, Extreme) had a characteristic: the (official) keyboardist was the guitarist. I assumed Brian was the pianist of Queen too and that Freddie didn't play anything. It all changed when I watched Bo Rhap's video Other than that I don't remember so many. Oh, I thought I Can't Live With You was John's, also because he had to have at least one song per album, and I always considered Don't Try So Hard to be either Freddie or Brian. |
Sebastian 20.11.2003 09:10 |
now I remember some more: In a TV music channel 'Friends Will Be Friends' from Wembley was shown, and since the choruses are not so high and Roger was shown singing, I thought Roger was the "bass singer" of the band (hence he did those low notes in Bicycle, Somebody, etc). Then I watched Killer Queen from Kampuchea, and in "anytime" Brian was zoomed, hence I thought he was the high-singing-voice of the band. Talking about that I believed Bo Rhap had a choir in the opera section and the band members just played the instruments. By the way, before I started to make recordings myself I used to think that the songs of the albums of any rock band were just the band playing it once in the studio, I didn't know about overdubs. That lead me to many misconceptions: If John played piano in 'You're My Best Friend', then the bass should be Freddie. |
slightly Fred 20.11.2003 10:41 |
The release of 'Live Killers' was my first contact with Queen and it was like "wtf, why didn't i experience that great rock band before?" After a looong wait (me being a fan already) came out their new album 'The Game' with everybody playing SYNTHS! [urgh] Followed by something called 'Flash Gordon'... |

My aunt introduced me to Queen's music after 1991, and the first albums that I listened were GH II and The FM Album. When I saw the picture of Roger (taken on the These are the days of our lives video shoot) on the GH II booklet, I was sure he was a she. I kept insisting so for a long time, until I read from somewhere that his name was Roger. Mind you, I was 8 at the time. I also used to translate their songs into Finnish with a dictionary, so you can imagine how silly some of the translations were, as I didn't understand the concept of the songs then, just the word to word translation.. |
PD. 20.11.2003 15:38 |
I used to think that Brian plays his guitar harmonies (for example those in Dreamers Ball) simultaiously on just one guitar. I also used to think that there is no band else equaling Queen in terms of diversity... until I heard the Beatles albums. |

Used to get confused between who was Brian and Roger, Now I'm Here was sung by Brian, and at the tribute concert, as Freddie shouted 'this is what you wanted and this is what you're gonna get' that he was really alive and it was all a big joke. Okay that feeling may have only existed for a couple of seconds but hell I believed. |

Sorry for the previous post. In those old days (I mean the early nineties :)) there were only pirate cassettes in Poland and there was I'm Going Slightly Mad on my copy of Queen II. I thought this was the album prior to Innuendo :) but my most amusing misunderstanding about this song is connected with the Cure. first there was this "Lullaby" video by the Cure and a bit later I saw I'm going Slightly Mad video and I was perfectly sure it was the same guy who previously had been afraid of sleep because of spiders. I didn't like IGSM at first because Lullaby had horrified me :)) |

I too mixed Roger and Brian up and when they appeared on a shit house talk show at the start of last year I thought 'Hang on! They've got the names mixed up! He's Brian and he's Roger. Twats!' Then of course I never got anything wrong ever again...ever. |

I've first heard the song "The Miracle" on FM radio. The reception (in my TV!) was so bad ...as also was my English. For weeks I used to think that the song was called "It's America", and I've phoned the radios several times per day requesting the song by that name: "...and I want to hear "It's America" by QUEEN, pleeease". |

1) The first time I ever heard Queen on the radio, i thought the singer was a woman. 2) I thought that Brian looked scary. (Okay, folks, cut me some slack, I was a rather imaginative nine-year-old.) 3) That the costumes were extremely dorky-looking. (Wait...I still think that.) 4) That I was about the only person who liked this band (and living where I do, you can't blame me.) 5) That all the band members were dead. |

My first album that I brought was GH1 when I was 9. I was shocked to learn that John was actually Roger, id got them mixed up and I was horrified to learn that the lead singer of Queen was Freddie Mercury......not Eddie Murphy! :D |
Lester Burnham 26.11.2003 13:58 |
"1) The first time I ever heard Queen on the radio, i thought the singer was a woman." You must've mistaken Queen with Rush, my dear. "5) That all the band members were dead." Thought that too, at one point. When I was just getting into the band, I would tell my friends, and they'd be like, "Oh, is that the band that's dead?" The looks of confusion I gave them... Also, I believed that the way the songs were sequenced on an album was the way that they were recorded in the studio, and that they were recorded in only one take. I would get confused when I'd read interviews with Brian or Roger saying it took the band so many months to record the albums. I'd say to myself, "But it's only 42 minutes long...what the hell?!" |
geeksandgeeks 26.11.2003 14:14 |

1) I thought that Frederick Mercury was French. 2) I thought that Brian May and Howard Stern were the same people. 3) I thought that Freddie sang lead vocals on all songs. 4) I was sure that TSMGO and IWIA were written by Freddie. 5) I was sure that they used a choir on several songs such as Teo Torriate. 6) I was sure that Barcelona was recorded with a philharmonic orchestra, 7) I thought that all songs from Made In Heaven were new. 8) I still think that Freddie faked his death ;-) |
geeksandgeeks 26.11.2003 16:17 |
"2) I thought that Brian May and Howard Stern were the same people." Apparently Brain gets that a lot. Being mistaken for Howard, that is ;P And I thought Teo Toriatte was recorded with a choir. |

In the beginning I thought that the videos were filmed while the band recorded the songs. That is why the song in the video was the exact same as the one on the album. I remember wondering what the videos for songs like Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon looked like thinking the filmed the recording of every song. |

The first time i heard queen, i didn't like them at all. My brother in law had the classic queen album. For some reason everytime i went over there i had to listen to queen. i have no idea but i was drawn to them. i thought they were quite femimine looking as well especially roger. haha. My sister told me they all used to simulate anal sex on stage or something like that and that threw me off a bit because it sounds so weird .. but i learned that that was all nonsense. I also thought that brian sang on under pressure too. i was a bit bugged by that one.. ha |

*goodco* 27.11.2003 08:11 |
'The bed of donney kays' and 'It's America' are classic! As are the rest of the posts on this thread. Thanks for sharing. And to add another note of being naive: how many of us thought that Freddie Mercury was an incredible birth name. |

Sebastian 27.11.2003 08:23 |
I also thought videos were filmed while they made the song, I had watched only 'Bo Rhap', 'Another One Bites' and 'We Are The Champions' at the time, and that led me to more mistakes: In 'Another One Bites' Roger mimes the choruses so I thought he did them, and the only harmony of the song is lower than the melody, so that supported my theory of Roger as the 'bass singer'. But the one in 'Champions' was even worse. After the first chorus ends the camera is on Roger, who turns to his left, bends a little and does a cymbal roll in the hi-hat I think. Well, back then what I thought is that there was a piano next to the drum-kit and that Roger played piano in the verses and switched to drums in the chorus, since Fred was standing up. That one was so funny :) Other than those I remember thinking John played keyboards in 'Innuendo' because I didn't note the bass and apparently all the band had to be performing. |

Please don't laugh... When I was a wee lass, I used to think Freddie was Harry Belafonte. I'M NOT KIDDING. See, back in like 85 or so there was a sticker book of rock stars. When I looked at my dad's copy of the Innuendo album back a few years, I saw that all the band members played keyboards as well as their respective instruments. I was amazed that, say, Roger could play drums AND keyboards at the same time! I even asked my dad how they did this, and he replied, "They've gotta be pretty talented," obviously misunderstanding my question as how they can play both instruments, but not simultaneously. |

I used to think that John played a co-lead guitar with Brian. Otherwise, how could they have gotten the two "bouncing" guitars in the middle of Bicycle Race? Or the the three alternating guitar "heralds" at the end of the hard rock in Bo Rhap? Then, of course, I realized that those were just stereo tricks and overdubs, yada yada yada... |

Mr.Jingles 30.11.2003 16:13 |
Growing up in the 80s, there were a couple of things that mislead me to believe that... - When I was 5 or 6 I used to believe that Freddie was Tom Selleck, as Magnum was a popular TV series in the 80s. - 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are The Champions' were 80s songs. - Before becoming a fan I thought that Freddie was one of those arrogant rock stars (like Sting or Bono) who think that the whole world turns around them. - Up to the point where 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was re-released after Freddie's death, I never heard the song before. After watching the video I was surprised to find out that they once had long hair in the 70s. Which made me believe that they broke up at some point in the 70s, and they got back together after like 7 years in the 80s when they had short hair (except Brian of course). - The intro to 'The Show Must Go On' was made of cellos, and not a synthesizer. Which made me wonder what member of Queen could play the cello... I thought it could possibly be Freddie. - I also used to believe that all the songs on 'Made In Heaven' were new, and Freddie recorded all of them 1 year before dying of AIDS. |
~Silje~ 30.11.2003 17:08 |
I thought that they had a choir. I thought that Freddie sang on all songs. I thought it was amazing how he could change his voice as from fitting BohRap to Drowse, and from there to '39. I thought it was QueenS not Queen. "Mom, did you hear about Queens?" "You mean Queen?" "Yes, Queens" etc... It didn't last long, and now I can't stand people saying Queens instead of Queen. I thought BohRap's music video would be like a movie, and the storyline would follow the song. I thought Freddie was straight for a while (not long, though). |
anillusion 02.12.2003 09:25 |
I thought the follow up LP to 'The Game' would be better, that 'One Vision' and 'I Want It All' were going to be part of absolute killer albums to come, because of their quality and the tracks got such great airplay on the radio and MTV I just knew they would get the Queen name back into the minds of the American public. Alas... |
