Disappointed... again

splicksplack 21.08.2020 13:39	For those of us interested in Queen(with Freddie) rather than Q+AL then the latest announcement of a Q+AL live cd/dvd is obviously a grave disappointment. I don't see it as any kind of artistic enterprise. It's clearly a money grab because of the cash they're losing on the cancelled tour with no guarantee that it will happen next year. (Maybe a nice touch would be a slice of the royalties to all the production staff who now have huge holes in their calendars with little hope of any other production work to fill in their empty schedules.) As someone pointed out, after the car crash that was The Cosmos Rocks it is unlikely that they will try to create a new studio album. I believe they are now creatively barren and so have two options. Option 1 is to continue on the world karaoke circuit with their tribute act currently starring the embarrassingly naff singing goat (yes he has range but so do howler monkeys). Option 2 is to listen to what Queen(wF) fans want and stop being so bloody precious with what's in the vaults. No ivory tower is tall enough to stop the human nature reflex of wanting to know what people are saying about you. So, judging by Roger's occasional grumpy outbursts, they either dip into the forums or are given a good briefing about what’s being said and what fans want. However there is an Option 3 and that’s a combination of the above which some may argue is what they are doing. Option 1 has clearly been successfully implemented over the past few years and is appreciated by those who like that sort of thing. But Option 2 has been very badly handled. My understanding is that the archivist (I’ll not snigger as I’m sure he is very good at sticking on labels, placing on shelves, entering on a spreadsheet) and some other unknowns that lurk at QPL come up with ideas and present them to Brian and Roger. And this is where it falls down. They need a team of hardcore Queen(wF) fans that can be given access to what they have in the vaults and can then give proper advice on what would be suitable and much appreciated releases for the Queen(wF) fans. e.g. Earl’s Court even if the sound and picture aren’t perfect. A Jazz/Crazy DVD with the best they have. etc. If Brian is such a perfectionist that, at this late stage in his and a lot of the original fans lives, he would deny them thrilling memories and new discoveries of old treasures due to his fragile ego then he is less of a man than we once thought. Don’t forget it also takes fans to make a successful band and we were on the journey too. What we do get are morsels padded out with stuff we already have that we are expected to pay for again and again in different packaging with one or two extra tracks or ridiculous Frankenstein mixes put together in recent years. I doubt even Jim Beach would argue that such releases wouldn’t make money. In the grand scheme of things the success of Q+AL would easily cover it and create some goodwill. QPL is as we all know an incredibly profitable company. What it would do is give something back. Give something back to those now in the shadows who, back in the day, did the heavy lifting, going to numerous shows in one tour and buying every single and every album on release day to make sure Queen hit the charts as high as possible. Time is short Queen. Do the decent thing.
JohnDeacon 21.08.2020 14:40	How exactly can they lose money??? All band members are friggin millionaires!!! Including Spike.
RS_Protos 21.08.2020 14:51	Some very good points, unfortunately I don't think they care what people have been asking for years, their main focus is selling out concerts these days and merchandise. It's probably a strategy, ride the wave as long as possible. Off course they know what the old fans want, what amazes me is how they completely ignore it or brush it off during interviews or requests.
MrFunster 21.08.2020 15:08	Very disappointing , waste of time.
infiniticz 21.08.2020 15:34	As I can remember, during Roger's solo The Lot release days, there were rumours that 14 discs was just a compromise - even the Cyberbarn gig was remastered and not included in full length. Many more, especially live material, was cut off - by produceres, label company, Jim Beach, or RT himself? Who knows. But - money rules, that is for sure.
Velizar 21.08.2020 15:37	The band got fucked after (M)Adam LAMBert joined Brian and Roger... Still can't believe they prefer touring instead of releasing/reworking demos!
Misfire. 21.08.2020 15:38	Totally agree with this post. Queen are releasing this Adam/Queen package purely because they have lost millions of pounds from this years cancelled tours. I also agree that May & Taylor don't give a stuff to the ardent fans from back in the day who supported them 100% like myself and a bunch of fans calling themselves "The Royal Family" they must be livid what has happened to Queen now. There must be loads of treasures that May & Taylor have banned from releasing until they pass away all in the future i guess, but we the fans are getting on in age as well and may not have the chance to hear whats in the vaults. I certainly will not be buying this pile of shite Queen & Adam Cd/Dvd and seven years on the road because it is still a massive insult to Freddie who got Queen up and running at the beginning and even some Queen fans slagged off "Live Killers" so they will be potty to praise this new release when it gets released on October 2nd. Sad day for real Queen & Freddie fans.
MyHumanZoo 21.08.2020 16:29	I’m disappointed too, that they aren’t releasing what may be in the archives or something redone from the earlier days. But it’s their stuff, they can do what they want. They don’t owe us anything. Looking at numbers, there are probably many more people that are new fans, ones that love Adam (judging by the sold out shows) and have come on board based on the BoRap movie. So they are capitalizing on the numbers, simple as that. Those of us, myself included, that like the older 70s style and Freddie’s fronting, are now in the minority and therefore aren’t at the front of the line when it comes to new releases. I don’t like it, but I get it. It’s about good business sense, and doing what makes them happy.
brENsKi 21.08.2020 16:32	SaddleBrown go to Queenpedia, under the sessionography tab you'll see what there is. not much really that's usable, decent, worth the effort. most of it is ideas, rough drafts and really not of any great quality. the fact that Brian's "perfection obsession" is cited as the chief reason for preventing this stuff being issued, is also the most valid argument for withholding release. nearly all of it is sub(Queen)standard. SaddleBrown well - perhaps if your hero hadn't been such a promiscuous slut - shagging everything that moved, and consequently (through his own recklessness) committing sexual suicide - he'd still be alive, and no other singer would have ever taken the stage with Queen. yes. only one person to blame for the whole Adam Lambert/Queen collaboration - and that person is Freddie Mercury.
Sunshine 21.08.2020 17:04	How can you be disappointed with something you haven’t even heard? Nobody says you need to buy any of their releases and if this isn’t anything for you then it’s ok, you don’t buy it. The reasoning that they want to cash in because of the missed tour is just a speculation at most, most likely they don’t need any income anymore. They are multi millionaires if not billionaires. They don’t need the money, they just do what they love and are born for: being musicians and entertainers. Thanks to Adam Lambert, Queen is able to perform live and this release is a document of it. When you are still relevant, which is Queen, I’d say even more than ever then you want to release your latest product and not the outtakes that a small niche of your audience is interested in. Bands like Aerosmith with a similar career and still perform with their original line-up, don’t release anything at all. Nothing. Totally nothing. You all here sound like small ungrateful little brats.

Also a Brian May and a Roger Taylor are geriatrics by now and their voices simply crack at many a note. Adam Lambert may be the glue holding this fragile trio together but not even the Stones or Celine Dion dared to ask such a ridiculous high ticket price.

Anton3283 21.08.2020 17:27	I hope this release is a summary of this collaboration, and by the end of this year we will hear that the project will cease to exist.
miraclesteinway 21.08.2020 17:45	Honestly I don't think any of them care about the money. Perhaps the record company cares about the money and has asked them to release something? The widest catch is to put an album out as Q+AL because Adam's fans will buy it and many people who love Queen will buy it, although some or many of the hardcore fans here won't buy it. I don't know what their reason is for not putting out Earl's Court or the Miracle 30th or any other project they could have put out is, but I guess we just have to live with the fact that they're not going to do it. I'm personally not offended by what they decide to release or not to release. Fans wanting something isn't a good enough reason for any band, especially one of the status and means as Queen, with or without Freddie and John, to release a product. Sure, it's NICE if they give us what we want, but they're under no obligation. I remember in the Queen for an Hour interview Freddie said that they certainly weren't doing it for the money anymore as none of them needed any more money, and since Brian, Roger, and John's wealth has eclipsed probably what they could have dreamed of even in 1990, I really don't think money grabbing is a factor. I think putting new product out and the legacy of their current project might be a factor, and they may want to test the water to see how well this is received before they record (or don't record) anything else? Just my two cents.
RS_Protos 21.08.2020 18:42	"I really don't think money grabbing is a factor" too funny, don't be so naïve
AlbaNo1 21.08.2020 19:30	This was always going to happen. They have been touring for years, lots of people have seen the act, so a live album is due. Whether or not any proper Queen legacy material also comes out sometime is independent of this release.
matt z 21.08.2020 20:08	Good points n all. Though I'm not the greatest fan of the collaboration this was long overdue. Unfortunately it's a cash grab instead of what was a rumored LAS VEGAS show

kosimodo 21.08.2020 21:18	I will buy the dvd. I saw some concerts with Adam and the quality of the show was very very high. Better then most of the concerts i have been to. And that was quit a lot back in the 80s, 90s and early 00’s they were very enjoyable indeed. I did buy return of the champions too. Must admit i never watch it. But then., paul rogers couldnt really pull it off beside his own songs. Adam Lambert is for me a pain with the rock songs. But man.. the kid can sing. Would love to see wwtlf with an indoor lightning show.

How greedy they have become, I remember years ago Roger bitching about Madonna and how much she was charging for tickets what a hypocrite, As Freddie once said without fans we wouldn't have big houses, Brian and Roger have forgotten that, they don't give a damn about fans, Brian only acknowledges other famous people as if they are some elite little private club on social media sites while ignoring fans, They don't even like the fact John Deacon earns money from from anything they do, so whoever thinks they don't care about money your wrong. This is why they never take any notice of fans with regards to releases of any kind. Loyal fans = wealth. George Michael gave a free concert for 2000 NHS nurses Ten years after his mother's tragic death in 1996, George gave a concert to say thank you to NHS nurses at the Camden Roundhouse in London. Will Mr Precious do the same for the nurses who looked after him recently while he was ill or just clap on his doorstep ?

k-m 22.08.2020 16:58	Quite frankly, I'm past the point of caring now. Queen have become so ubiquitous that I really need to change the station when I hear a cut from their Greatest Hits I or II again. GH III singles are slightly less overplayed which makes them slightly more bearable. That's slightly offtopic, I know, but the same applies to QAL and this new release. I really don't care they are doing it, they have corrupted the legacy anyway with all these disturbing QPR discs, so one from QAL really doesn't change anything for me. In fact, I'm surprised they waited so long, they have clearly grown much more reluctant in this area following the QPR flops. The tracklist looks boring and I suspect it will be a difficult watch considering all the edits and the fact Adam leads every single bloody song on it, bar LOML. If they are doing it, it should be also a double CD, just to include all the rarer stuff they occasionally performed, but dunno, maybe they watched it and thought it sounded crap so they just opted for the popular ones they had tens of various takes of.
AlbaNo1 22.08.2020 17:12	The post in question falls just short of implying that Freddie deserved his fate as a consequence of his actions. As though he committed a crime. It’s the sort of point a 14 year old would make on YouTube or Reddit. It’s also a very simplistic view of cause and effect to then make Freddie responsible for the formation of a live act line up around forty years after the time of these actions. Brian and Roger are responsible, nobody else. Any number of permutations could have happened had Freddie lived. The band could have been together. They have split into two separate touring bands. They may have been fully retired. In a Led Zeppelin context it’s like saying John Bonhams drinking habits are responsible for Robert Plants interesting and varied country/world music band.

It's their brand, they have all right to do whatever they want. As long as people buy tix and this release, they seem to do things right overall. Negative Creep 22.08.2020 21:41	splicksplack wrote: I believe they are now creatively barren. Roger has been creatively barren since 2000, when he along with Brian realised they could make way more money out of a play than working on new music and having to tour smaller venues. He took too much time out of writing new music, that when he finally got round to it and released Fun On Earth he'd completely lost it. The only 3 decent songs were old, and he was so desperate for material that he actually re-recorded One Night Stand, and that joke song Sunny Day. I'd argue that Brian has been creatively barren since Queen ended, as his 2 solo albums are dreadful.
Saint Jiub 22.08.2020 22:03	Thanks for the reminder. I shall have to relisten to Fun on Earth again. Although it is not a masterpiece, my memory of Fun on Earth is much more positive than yours. AlbaNo1 22.08.2020 22:53	Brian’s solo albums were decent , with some real highlights . The song Another World is genuinely moving. I saw Brian on his Back to the Light tour. It was among my first ever proper gigs. The solo on Back to the Light he peeled off was truly heroic. Furia also has nice work. . I’ll leave it there,
mike hunt 22.08.2020 23:38	Brian solo work is good music with some real gems...It has Cozy on drums, but for me It failed the longevity test as a whole...The last time I put one of his solo albums on was about a decade ago and It turned off by track 3...The song Another World Is excellent.
k-m 23.08.2020 01:16	I agree, there is a longevity issue there, definitely. I don't know what it is about Brian's solo records, but they just always sounded bad to me, some of the songs were maybe even poorly arranged, all of which made them sound subpar to Queen. Even though many were actually pretty decent with some real gems like some of you pointed out. Another World, the song, is very good indeed. His last one, New Horizons, wasn't that bad either, but it sounded like Atari again.
Saint Jiub 23.08.2020 01:39	Am I the only one who hates the song "Another World". It sounds so whiny to me. "Space" - 0:47 "Business" - 5:07 "China Belle" - 4:01 "Why Don't We Try Again" - 5:24 "On My Way Up" - 2:57 "Cyborg" - 3:54 "The Guv'nor" - 4:13 "Wilderness" - 4:52 "Slow Down" (Larry Williams) - 4:18 "One Rainy Wish" (Jimi Hendrix) - 4:05 "All the Way from Memphis" (Ian Hunter) - 5:16 "Another World" - 7:30 Business, Wilderness and Slow Down are "meh" to me. but more tolerable than Another World. The rest of the songs are excellent (for me).

Raf 25.08.2020 23:06	Queen (or Brian+Roger, whatever you wanna call them) doesn't owe anyone anything. "but I bought so many of their albums" ...you paid for the albums, you got the albums, end of the deal. "and I went to so many concerts back in the day" ...you paid for each of the tickets, they played for you on those nights. That's it. The fact that you're willing to pay for a specific piece of music they aren't planning to release doesn't mean they owe you that piece of music. If they ever do release it, you buy it from their online store and it never arrives at your house, then they owe you. If you dislike whatever they're releasing these days or you think their current ticket prices are unfair, then just keep your money for yourself. You don't have to like everything they do and they don't have to do whatever you like.

And regarding "they owe me nothing" - they don't but if they announce the box ONE YEAR AGO (Jim Beach in Montreux) and Greg Brooks says it is almost finished and then they postpone it due to a shitty QAL product then this should tell you something. Except you are Maylor asskissers like the 2 posters b4 me Dude, calm down, don't shake the ground. Nothing will change from the fact that you are indignant here. Neither the record label, nor Jim Beach, nor Brian and Roger browse the forums in the hope that everyone is eager to get a fresh album of their shop tour for new fans. Even if they did, they would not care deeply about our discontent. You are right Anton, but that's actually slightly problematic. Queen has become awfully ubiquitous over the years and they just couldn't care less about what the hardcore fans think or want. I remember when a year or two ago Roger was asked about the criticisms of Bo Rhap the film and he said something like "Fuck you, fuck you all the way to the bank, you know?" and I thought it was a particularly unpleasant remark from him, even though I didn't have any particular issues with him before. I thought, gosh man, just because some people don't like the way you presented Freddie's story, you say that? It's a shame the media did not pick it up, as that could change their fortunes pretty quick. Fortunately for Roger, or unfortunately, they must have thought he's not recognisable enough to make it a headline story. If Elton John said something like that, it would certainly cause a stir, but since it was Roger, "that drummer from Queen", nobody cared. In the documentary The Show Must Go On, Roger said, "If you don't like our concerts with Lambert, just don't come." I don't remember literally, but the essence is the same. Sounds cynical to me althoughI wouldn't go to the concerts of someone who can not sings Freddie's songs anyway. I think it a waste of money. And even the fact that there is Brian and Roger will not save. John and Freddie are not there . Queen for me is Freddie, John, Brian, Roger On QOL someone said "Watching QAL just makes you realize how much Freddie is really missing" and therefore is is not enjoyable at all. Fair point And I cannot but agree with this fair point

What is the point always bickering and causing chew for me all the time as i never cast the first stone but you and Brenski do. As i pointed out before i have nothing but admiration for Runner70 because he knows what is good and what is bad when it comes to Queen. We are sort of quite similar with our opinions and not that rare for that matter as many people have the same thoughts regarding the ailing ridiculous band now.

AlbaNo1 30.08.2020 14:59	It doesn’t make sense to criticise the guys for partnering with Adam Lambert or doing cheesy stuff and then also dismissing them for independent non commercial projects. Roger never had a successful solo career. He just knocks out albums now and again for his own pleasure and ,presumably, that of his die hard fans.

The problem with this jerk Gerry is that he threatens people and acts like a 14 year old pretend hard man in a school play ground. How many times do I have to say I'll happily meet you, but as usual you're the pathetic tweet who threatens then runs away. You're the one running scared because while you're saying if we ever meet I'd be scared of you (ha ha ha, sorry back to the subject) you're the one barking the threats and not carrying them out. You are a petty little school boy and as such not capable of meeting a real man.
thomasquinn 32989 15.09.2020 13:35	"petty school boy" seems like a pretty good description for you, Gerry. You've literally first pulled the macho gorilla-act with physical threats and mentioning how terrified we would be if we met you in the flesh, only to follow it up by a cowardly "you really expect me to meet you". If you had any self-respect you'd leave and never return, but hey, considering your long history of posts here, you will mercilessly degrade and humiliate yourself with no restraints or, apparently, any sense of how you're making yourself look. You might actually be the biggest masochist since Francis Bacon. Pity you can't paint nearly so well.

moonie 16.09.2020 17:17	Looking back at the old post that Brenski linked, the amusing thing for me is Gerry offering to meet Vocal Harmony in Oxford Street, London in an hour. sonic 18.09.2020 20:12	Are the Hot Space shirts that are now for sale on Queen's official online store an indication that m,ore Hot Space memorabilia (like a picture disc) will soon follow? I would have expected that they would put Hot Space in the lime light in 2022, 40 years after the initial release. Anyone has some information on this one?
