Rudi did a Q&A on Instagram Live yesterday to promote his new book and a “secret project” he is working on with Peter Freestone.. answered questions about what was his favorite music videos he directed, his relationship with the band as well as other artist he has worked with. Here’s a clip of him talking about the Knebworth footage also confirming he has more backstage footage of Queen in Budapest and brings up an interesting comment he made about a mini documentary he said he made for the Budapest DVD/BluRay that was only released in Japan |

We all know that there are hours of footage from Queen taped by DORO. Only problem is the money. QP won't pay Doro the amount they want. |

Budapest release only in Japan?? |
Freddie rey 01.03.2020 20:41 |

The relationship between DORO and Queen has always puzzled me. Why would the band hire DORO to film for them, then have to pay again for the footage? We're always told what great businessmen Queen are so why would they sign such a terrible contract? |

"The relationship between DORO and Queen has always puzzled me. Why would the band hire DORO to film for them, then have to pay again for the footage? We're always told what great businessmen Queen are so why would they sign such a terrible contract?" -------------------- -- Depends on the contract they had. One time usage ( for promotional services eg) and a buyout are 2 totally different things. --Why do you consider this contract "terrible" ? Queen were multimillionaires and DoRo freelancers ( from what I gather ). So ? You want a product, you pay. If Queen only wanted 1 time usage, fine, costs them much less than a buyout. -And DoRo were/are totally entitled to do with the footage (after an embargo time ) whatever they wanted. It seems that's what they do .Great ! |

Wait ! Is this Rudi " The last time we filmed him (Freddie) was in the Duckhouse/Montreux" Dolezal ? Yeah right ;) Oh I forget they are totally broke Wiener City Film Produktion ( broke 2002) Doro Media AG ( broke 2003) Doro Films GmbH Munich ( broke around 2014) last year 2019...guess what the next bankruptcy. They totally lost the plot business wise. Okay serious...of course they sit on many gems, no doubt. But I choose the freedom to beleive it when it will see the day of light. |

Many companies do this to later 'restart' their business |

--------------------------------------------- Isn't it true after 30 years or so without renewal of contracts, ownership and copyrights of music and footage are for the company/person that holds the goods ( reels of Queen footage) ---- It all depends what kind of contract they have, right ? Never heard of a 30 years clause. |
FlorianS 02.03.2020 20:29 |
I could imagine that DoRo were paid for the ready product they delivered to Queen productions and by that time nobody thougt about the unused footage. Why should Queen productions at that time have paid extra money for stuff which was cut? Nobody could have guessed or cared about which value this stuff might have 30+ years later. Just my thoughts... |

You correctly argue that the way you describe is sensible - but the other way is equally sensible, and more in keeping with Queen's controlled approach to their output, generally. |

Oh Rudi! Filmed Footage from Knebworth? Yes we saw parts in Rare Live and we had some Knebworth-DVDs here on QZ, where the material from DORO was included as Bonus - nothing new for me. Footage from Budapest - see the doc "How we won the East" - nothing new. The book "Freddie Mercury - My Story" from Rudi Dolezal - I forget counting how often it was announced and then postboned - again and again and again and ... - you see, I don't believe that this book will ever be released. At amazon.de you can find even the cover of this book - but before you start dreaming - it will NEVER be released. |

This new book I think is called, “My Friend Freddie” |

You correctly argue that the way you describe is sensible - but the other way is equally sensible, and more in keeping with Queen's controlled approach to their output, generally. ---- With hindsight maybe it's sensible or as an outsider one may wonder why Queen weren't more assertive about such business deals.--- But then, you'd also have to take account the music industry in the eighties and evaluate what used to be considered a "fair deal". Trouble with Trident from their beginnings in the seventies apparently wasn't on their mind in the eighties. Or : To squeeze visual artists into some nasty contracts that Queen had " suffered from " with Trident was something to avoid. This said recording videos, taking photographs etc on assignment for a band like Queen was a collaboration between artists. Neil Preston, Mick Rock & Dolezal &Co all have published their versions with material from Queen assignments. [Even a mere employee like Peter Freestone got away with publishing his memories about entirely private things. Here, one could wonder why he was not bound to a NDC ? ] . --- Why would Queen be entitled to own everything ? They'd better be grateful for the promotion they get with those visuals and memories on social media and elsewhere. If you dig pretty deep on cyberspace you may find unauthorized documentaries about the Rolling Stones & co. While they weren't able to get those deleted, this stuff contributes to their legacy. Ditto for Queen. |

Rudi is annoying af on his Instagram. He's exploiting his connection to Freddie to the point that he starts every post with "Hi Darlings (What Freddie would've said)." <--- Paraphrasing. |
