Weird topic maybe but interesting, at least for me !
As there are several references to "God" within songs written by different members of the band (Innuendo, All God’s People, The Prophet’s Song, Thank God it’s Xmas, Break Free, Is this the world…, The Miracle, etc.), I was wondering about their religious views.
Of course they never publicly expressed them, but we do have some bits of interviews (for instance Freddie in 85 : "I know He’s looking after me").
My guess is that Roger is an atheist (or an agnostic) and that Freddie believed in some kind of non specific God. I have no idea for John and Brian.
Do you have any information on this subject ?
Merry Christmas everyone! Such an interesting topic. Seems like Freddie and Brian believed in God and had more spirituality than the other two.
I found a couple of articles that may interest you on Brian:
Interviewer: You're not a Catholic, are you?
Brian: 'No, it's funny, my parents were not religious, they were just very, very I suppose 'moralistic' is the word. Very straight. Particularly my dad. The two worst things I ever did in his eyes were; one, give up my academic career [Brian once planned a career in astronomy] to become a pop star; and two, living with a woman. It turned out to be the woman I was going to marry, but he was outraged. We more or less didn't speak for a year or so. It drove my mum round the bend. link
'I was deeply depressed,” he says of this period. “I suppose I would call myself a spiritual person in a sense, but I don’t really subscribe to any of the formal religions,” says May. “I went to this clinic in Tucson, Arizona, when I was very down, and they said, ‘We have to find your spirituality — what you most enjoy.’ link
