Did you see it yet? My family has seen it, but not me. I can’t believe the Star Wars saga has been going on for 42 years! |

The first Star Wars movie I'm not excited to watch. I plan to watch it on Friday, but from what I've heard all of the rumours, which I thought were too dumb to be true, ARE true. Most of the people seem to hate it, but I have already seen positive reviews, so I'm curious to see how bad will it go. Unfortunately we won't see the original JJ Abrams/George Lucas version of Episode 9, that sounds kind of exciting. |
SweetCaroline 27.12.2019 15:15 |
I saw it yesterday and like certain parts of it that caught me by surprise. It brings back a lot of old bits from previous episodes to tie it all together. I still have questions because I am not an afficianado like other members of my family. |

I have just came home from the cinema. Can't decide if this was the best from the sequel trilogy or the best one. It was a huge mess |
Saint Jiub 30.12.2019 01:43 |
Episode 9 was good enough that I did not look at my watch during the movie. Episode 9 pales next to episodes 3, 4, and 5, and does not distinguish itself from the other 4.5 episodes. |

And it looks like 5 different things happened during the 5 seconds :) But yes, I agree, my "preference order" would be something like Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Attack of the Clones Return of the Jedi The Force Awakens Solo The Phantom Menace Revenge of the Sith Rogue One Rise of the Skywalker The Last Jedi |

It did what it had to do. The problem was all the setting up of the various plot strands had to be done quickly at the start rather than be dotted throughout the previous films. It was essentially a stand alone film due to this. Quite why they didn't have an overall plan is mind blowing. I enjoyed some of it (hey it's star wars - it's a huge chunk of my life) but there were far too many 'WHAT' moments which generally prevented me from relaxing. It's taken this long to really get the characters - which took the originals about 45 minutes in the first film to do. Mine list is more: 1) Original trilogy 2) Solo / Rogue 3) Prequels 4) Sequels but like picking albums, this is fluid and a couple of films sneak outside their bracket. |

I gave myself a task for the new year out of 3 things the rest of the world has done that I haven't, they were... i) Watch Friends from episode 1 ii) Read and watch the Harry Potter films/books iii) Watch Star Wars I chose Harry Potter because... Friends makes me want to wretch even if I just see one scene I am wondering what the fuck is so funny. Star Wars.. well, 3 is 1 or 1 is 1 there are the new ones and the old ones.. I have no fucking idea where to start and different people will tell me different things about where the start is.. |

Star Wars, Empire ... Rogue One is good. Everything else sucks force dick, especially Phantom. |

'I have no fucking idea where to start and different people will tell me different things about where the start is.. ' Do the first made trilogy first A new Hope / Empire / Return of the Jedi. You can leave it there if you want. Everything else ruins it. If you do that I'll do the Harry Potter films. I've never seen more than 10 minutes of any of them. |

If you will like what you've seen, watch the prequel trilogy (Episodes 1 - 3). If you will at this time like the universe, watch the 2008 Clone Wars cartoon series. If you will love the universe and want more, watch the sequel trilogy (Episodes 7 - 9), and the Rebels and Resistance cartoons. If you ever get Disney+ and will like the original trilogy, I also recommend to watch The Mandalorian. |
Chief Mouse 31.12.2019 14:01 |
To be honest, one can watch The Mandalorian right after OT. I think they flow rather well together. |
dysan 31.12.2019 17:10 |
I'd like someone to chop Mando into one movie. Cut out all the shit. I enjoyed it, but can't help feeling it would be better without the padding. |
GreatKingFairyFeller 02.01.2020 03:11 |
If you’re going to watch Star Wars I would find a recap of the prequels and then the original trilogy. After that just watch The Mandalorian and force Awakens. If you like the Force Awakens watch a recap of the last Jedi (because you shouldn’t suffer) and then rise of Skywalker. If you like the OG trilogy than watch Rogue one. |

No that's not how it works :D Might as well watch a 5 minute recap of the entire saga. He needs to find his own way and the most pure way is to do the original trilogy first and take it from there. I'd ditch the TV shows and cartoons. That's like an additional 30 hours of nerdgasm which a casual fan would probably die from. |

Haven't seen it. I was hoping for more public backlash.. but apparently there hasn't been enough. (Damn you, geeks!! you called for a boycott but still went!.. TWICE! THRICE!!...etc) I find it amazing that the sequels have been so bad. TFA was good for 15 minutes ...and then people started speaking. The film is trash...a pointless coincidental meandering that rehashed the first film damn near scene for scene. TLJ was entertaining and different, I was LAUGHING throughout the one time I saw it (opening weekend?)... I was the only one laughing at places where laughter was unintended (the prank call was stupid). I laughed so much realizing it was a complete fuck up of a film and because it was giving the finger to basically every SW fan. It was a shipwreck and broke with laws of the SW universe. Dead Mary Poppins Leia didn't get a laugh from me, but Admiral Holdo (the Holdo femme, art school teacher hipster granny who is gay chic but HOLDs her Own! - AKA POOCHIE from the SIMPSONS) ... she got me laughing... and that whole bit of a kamikaze thing was interesting, but it truly negates everything about SW laws... if that was the case they'd simply hyperdrive into the Death Star etc.. God that shit got old so fast. I'm sure I'll watch the new one at some point, I'm a big fan of Ian McDiarmid.. he was one of the only good things about the Prequels.... Wanted to see Lando too... but eh.. I watched SPIES IN DISGUISE (I'm a pigeon fan) on xmas instead. That was fun, and full of laughs...and had the most painful transformation scene since An American Werewolf in London. (at least to me, it did) I've heard good things about the Mandolorian.. but that's cause its a competent director and fan in Jon Favreau. I'd seen that Phantom Menace was a FIRST DRAFT... same with the sequel trilogy... and its no wonder nothing seemed to go together, why the characters are lousy, and everything simply aligns for no fucking reason. Thank God, that bullshit is over. Did I miss anything compelling by Holding out on this? |
dysan 02.01.2020 19:44 |
There's one funny bit at the end. There's some nice bits throughout but it just moves too fast to establish stuff. Like in the old days you'd understand Hoth and the Forest Moon and 'get' what they're about. You'd have time to be absorbed into them. This trilogy it's just been more like 'here we are... it's night time' BLAM!!! 'lets leave!!' Give it a watch when it's on telly. |
pittrek 02.01.2020 19:57 |
Please use the correct terminology when you talk about the characters - it's not "Poochie", it's "Vice Admiral Gender Studies". Did you miss something? Well in the same week I almost cried when a pig alien died in The Mandalorian and had no emotional reaction during Episode 9, even when "a main character" dies. If you like flashy images, and pew pews, you will love this movie. And there are many flashy images, so many that theatres all over the world have to put out epilepsy warnings and there are at least 2 cases of epileptic attacks reported from this movie. If you like deeper meanings of things, if you like philosophies, story arcs with meanings, things you will remember decades later, you can skip this movie. And no, I don't blame JJ. If the current leaks are true, he had nothing to do with the final cut, he didn't even SEE the movie before it was released. From reddit:
|
pittrek 02.01.2020 19:58 |
...as well as Ben's to create a physical manifestation of his own thoughts to nudge him towards what he needed to do. That was her own way of communicating that with him. And it wasn't possible without her dying in the process. She made the ultimate sacrifice for her son and this flew over people's heads with the Disney cut. - The late November cut (the last cut JJ approved of) had scenes with Rose and Rey still. JJ wanted to give her a more meaningful arc. Disney felt that that was too risky too. My source mentioned that Chris Terrio said that it was because of the Leia scenes but this is only partially true because she had four other scenes including two with Rey/Daisy that Leia was not in. - Finn wanting to tell Rey something was always meant to be force sensitivity. In the 3 hour cut, it’s explicitly stated. There was a moment when Jannah and he were running on top of that star destroyer and Finn needed to unlock or move something and he force-moved it and acted surprised when it happened. This was replaced with a CGI’d BB-8 fixing whatever he needed to fix on there. - Babu Frik was nearly cut because some execs at Disney thought he would be the new Jar Jar. They are really surprised that people love him this much. He was JJ's idea and was created in collaboration with some artists and puppeteers. The personality was all JJ. - There were a bunch of scenes where Rey and Kylo (separately) went through quiet moments of reflection to deal with what they were going through. On her part, her going through the realization that there's something sinister about her past. Him going through regret and remorse but trying to shut it out. My source said that the Kylo scenes were especially amazing because of Adam's performance and how he managed to portray that inner turmoil. It provided much more context and added deeper meaning to both his battle with Rey and the final redemption arc at the end. It didn't happen so suddenly and it was more structured than what we got. - The Kylo/Rey scene where he dies was at least 4 minutes longer with more dialogue. Ben was always supposed to die. Source also added that if he wasn’t, then that might’ve been in an earlier draft which they haven’t read. The first draft they read included Lando (the first few didn’t). The Reylo kiss and Ben’s death was not part of the reshoots. It was a part of the re-editing. Even the cut that JJ thought was coming out earlier this month had a longer version of that scene than what was shown in the theatrical cut. - JJ was against the Reylo kiss (or Reylo in general). This was Disney's attempt to please both sides of the fandom. - JJ was not happy with where TLJ took the story. The final result is a mix of that story and the story told by Disney and whoever they tried to impress (“certainly not the fans”). JJ is gutted over the final result. Star Wars means a lot to him. He had to sacrifice large chunks of the story in TFA but he was promised more creative control on TROS and instead the leash they had him on was only tightened as time went by. A source said that this is the one franchise and the one piece of his work that he didn't want to mess up and instead it turned into his worst nightmare. When he found out that he was blindsided with the cut they presented, he said "what the fuck??" when Kylo was fighting the Knights of Ren at the end and the Williams music that was used for it was not what he wanted at all. He seemed to think it was out of place. - JJ's cut still exists and “will always exist”. We most likely will never see it unless “someone accidentally leaks it.” |
pittrek 02.01.2020 20:08 |
Oh and apparently the "Reylos", the "new" fans Lucasfilm wanted to cater to as soon as they realized they lost a huge amount of the old fans, are now going insane on twitter and are sending death threats to JJ and Lucasfilm employees. Classy. But we, the people who didn't like TLJ are the ones called "toxic". At least The Mandalorian is great, both John Favreu and Dave Filoni definitely KNOW how to tell good stories, hopefully they will be in charge of all future SW projects |
dysan 03.01.2020 09:28 |
I don't think the Mandalorian is great per se. It's better than the childrens cartoons I've seen sure. I think it has great parts but the padding way overloads the series. Like Rogue One and Solo (yep, Solo) I believe it's the direction the films need to go in. Some are for digging way into the distant corners of the unseen universe - I'm strictly 'show me classic stormtroopers and background characters I had the figures of in 1983!'. But, if it's good, I'm happy. I haven't picked apart that leak yet - but I'm not sure I believe that he didn't see the final cut. It's a BIG release (I dare say the most important of his career) and if he was that hands off he is bad at his job. It's been largely panned and it's his was of saying 'well I didn't actually have much to do with it..' |
dysan 03.01.2020 09:29 |
Good thread BTW. Well done everyone. |
dysan 03.01.2020 09:32 |
There's been stories like this with most of the new films. I guess at some point we'll see the alternate / original cuts. I'm very keen to do this. |
Holly2003 03.01.2020 11:24 |
Saw it yesterday. A few hours of fairly mindless entertainment. The plot was laughable and repetitive. Apart from Adam Driver the acting wooden and the dialogue plodding. Nevertheless it had some good moments, the effects were entertaining, and best of all it's finally over. |

I dislike Adam Driver because I like him so much. |

I'm also one of about 6 people on the planet who was like 'oh the guy from Girls I like him' when he was announced in TFA. |

The pew pews were always just a TINY part of every Star Wars movie (until the prequels). Now it's almost ONLY action. The only scenes which I liked in TROS were actually character scenes, like scenes between Kylo and Rey, or Kylo and you-know-who-but-I-don't-want-to-spoil-it. I don't know why, but in the original trilogy I found the action exciting, I still do, decades later. In the Disney films I find the action boring (even though it started during the prequels). |
matt z 05.01.2020 05:45 |
^ Yeah, it's all inconsequential bullshit with people who are generally on some useless task because there's no story that impresses circumstances upon them. Just mindless eye fuck nonsense. One good thing about the sequels was the fact they went back to some organic effects. Even if the fights were ill thought /pointless and choreography really bad |

I also prefer action sequences to be balanced out with scenes of character development and expository dialogue. Sadly, CGI action sequences are what young people prefer these days, having grown up on video games. In the 1970s an action movie had a kind of formula of an action scene every 15 minutes. If you don't believe me watch Don Siegel's Dirty Harry which set the trend. Now, due to limited attention spans, these kind of movies tend to have action scenes much more frequently, and that;s why many of them are unwatchable for me. |
