It's that time of year again, 28 years on Sunday since Freddie left us. In some ways it feels like just yesterday and in other ways it feels like an eternity ago. He's just as famous now as he's ever been, and I've no doubt he'd be really proud of the legendary status he has achieved in the years since his death. Freddie used to admire the greats of his past, the actors and actresses, the singers, the composers, and he'd be proud that he's now listed among them. Given the choice we'd rather have him here, but we didn't get that choice. Whatever we all think about what Brian and Roger are up to, or what we think about John's decision to stay out of things, or Adam Lambert's voice, or the Bohemian Rhapsody film or the latest cruddy compilation or autotuned live LP, let's take a bit of time this weekend to remember with gratitude the man and musician that was and is Freddie Mercury. On November 25th I've no doubt we can all go back to tearing each other's and Brian May's hair out. |

That's when I became a Queen fan. I was a little boy. My local radio station played Queen's music, so frequently for a week. Not just the hits, but everything! I didn't know who or what Queen were, I didn't know about Freddie Mercury, but I loved the sounds I was hearing. I didn't even know it was about Freddie's death until years later. I wasn't into any music until that point in my life. It still took years to get a Queen album. I heard about Freddie's sexuality, and at that age, I didn't dare ask for a Queen album, but my Mom bought me Greatest Hits I & II for Christmas one year, and I was so hooked. Before that, I was relying on the radio and old Queen fan sites to listen to the whole spectrum of Queen's music, which were mostly downloads of rarities. So I never got to hear the late 80's / early 90's Queen much until I got the Greatest Hits I & II album. |

My first memories about Queen/Freddie are from the early nineties, after Freddie had died. I remember Living on my own being a hit in 1993 and absolutely adoring that voice. I also remember the top 100 on 31/12 a couple of years after Freddie's death with Bohemian Rhapsody being number 1 and my very young self being mesmerized by that voice (again). Around the same time (mid nineties) I read in a newspaper article about a man who died after admitting 1 day earlier that he had aids. I was intriguied by this story but being only about 8 or 9 years old it took me many more years to figure out this person was the one with the voice that I admired so much!! In pre internet days getting info wasn't that easy :-) |

I was travelling back home in my car when I heard the announcement on the radio that Freddie had AIDS. I'd just seen Liverpool draw 0-0 with Wimbledon at Crystal Palaces ground. It was possibly the worst game of football I've ever seen. My wife was heavily pregnant with our first child and the decision to go to the game was taken late. We lived in Windsor at the time. We were both shocked, and both thought it odd that he had felt the need to speak out, it was all we talked about on the way home and into the night. The next day Freddie died, but I like most of the country, didn't get the news till the Monday morning when breakfast radio was full of it. That night, after the news, they played TATDOOL first time anyone saw it. It was both beautiful and gruesome. I was so gobsmacked I forgot to record it. When my wife and I look back on our lives or talk about the old days, we both think of that weekend as a moment our lives changed. Despite having got married, despite having a baby due in a couple of months, it's that weekend that we feel we grew up. Its difficult to explain why, but music had bonded us, our courting was very music based. Concerts, listening to records, endless discussions about why George was the best Beatle, how Magnum's age and looks had stopped them becoming as big as Whitesnake or Leppard, or how Fleetwood Mac without Lindsay Buckingham was a travesty. Lennon had been shot before we met, Freddies death was our first shared tragedy. 2 months later we were parents, 2 and a bit months after that we left our new born son with my sister in law for the first time and stood in the crowd at Wembley stadium watching the Tribute concert. We left halfway through Champions because we couldn't afford to be stuck in traffic when our son had never been left with anyone else before. Also my wife was in severe pain and dripping milk over anyone in range. I realise I just wrote about me and not Fred. But in life he impacted me through my teens until I was almost 30. In death he helped me mature and become serious. There are few moments in life that you can pinpoint exactly what you were doing and where you were when you heard the news, but Freddies AIDS announcement and death are seared into my brain so deeply I can picture them both in great detail. And Fred, you still impact me now. 3 countries and 2 more kids later. |

My first real memory of Freddie and Queen was watching Live Aid all day with my children who were entering their teens at ages 14 and 12 and were getting into all of the great music from the UK. More than the legendary set they performed earlier in the day, i have an even better memory of Freddie and Brian’s poignant rendition of “Is This The World We Created.” link |

28 years to the very day the greatest rock male vocalist died and Queen as a band would never be dynamic ever again without him. Music has got dire in that 28 year period just like Freddie predicted, but thank goodness we still have Freddie's brilliant back catalogue of work to listen to and admire No one comes near to what Mercury achieved as a musician and never will, because Freddie had it all he was the best singer ever, brilliant songwriter, great pianist, and boy could he work an audience into a frenzy, he is called the greatest showman ever for a reason ! Tonight at 18.55pm i will play one of Freddie's songs and remember and be proud that he was my hero my legend and that no one can ever take the crown from Freddie ever! |

May he rest in peace. I remember watching a TV report about his death which was filled with details how frail he was during the last days (it was shocking to hear that on a national polish television). I see that today Express is having a field day revelling in describing Freddie's deteriorating condition near the time of his death.... tabloids never let down, don't they ? |

for myself - as a fan since 1974, and (almost) at an age where senility might help me forget where I was when I heard, I still can't forget. i'm sure I've retold my own story: driving to work (from worcestershire to london) stupidly-early that monday morning and the radio playing hit after hit queen song - with hardly any DJ talk. then the half-hourly news - 6am, I pulled over when I heard. couldn't believe it. but here's the thing: (expecting Jazz(hands) to start hurling flame-throwers at me any second): what is there to miss? Most of Freddie's 1980's song-writing was lazy, Roger and John were doing the band's heavy lifting in the 80s. In a way, I liken mid-late 80s Queen to the end of the Beatles. The two quieter members were coming to the fore - being more productive. Roger was definitely the George Harrison of the group - his solo/Cross 80s output backs this up. Sure, I miss 70's Queen (not just Freddie), but the band itself was on autopilot for huge chunks of that last decade. The only reason the band exists at all these days is BECAUSE Freddie died. Had he still been alive, Queen would not exist as a going concern. They were all headed their separate ways. His death brought them together. |

Thanks to almost everyone who shared a few words about Freddie and your memories. Shame on the person who has a go at me for not being a Freddie/Queen fan before he died. Thst does not mean I can't pay respect to Freddie, and recognized what a talent he was and a wealth of music he left us with. I admire, respect Freddie for more than half my life as of now, and yes he and his music means so much to me. |

@brENsKi Queen have been together an extra 28 years since Freddie died and no split in sight sadly with the inferior Adam Lambert and they have not been productive since "Made in Heaven" album, and the constant touring is such a boring sight in my mind. Just read an interview with Pete Townsend and even though "The Who" are still touring he said "We havnt got a f**king band anymore" so surely Queen don't either because both bands have lost two vital band members. |

For me there's loads of bands out there "doing it" - they may not be the original lineups - but while an original member remains, then it's valid. Stones Who Rainbow ELO Fleetwood Mac f*ck even the current "Karaoke Purple" is valid while Paicey continues...YOU don't have to like it, and YOU don't even have to accept it - but YOU need to calm the f*ck down - because there is absolutely nothing YOU can do about it. grow up and move on - otherwise you become a "mad old man in the park shouting at pigeons". |

Looking back at the band and how they were in 1984 at the Montreux Rock Festival compared to now there is no comparison and they do look cheap and plastic! The special magic has gone from Queen now we have no Deacon no Mercury and Queen are more "Smile" than Queen ! i do not want to see them live again because i have seen Queen 5 times in the 70s and 80s and i just know if i went now i would be disgusted. |

I saw Ritchie Blackmore twice with Rainbow and once with Purple back in the 80s. So when he toured an "new rainbow" 3 years ago, I saw him again, and again in 2017. Our idols won't be around forever, so rather than quibble about the lineup, I'll take the opportunity every time it comes along. Same with Jeff Lynne's ELO in 2016, and Eagles (with Deacon Frey replacing Glenn). For me - if my heroes tour - and I want to see them then I'll move heaven and earth to do so. Now, can someone persuade Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, CCR and Sammy Hagar to visit the UK? Someone should bend Percy's elbow over a Zep reunion and while they're at it, get Paul, Ringo, Dani and Julian to do something. Current Queen though, it's not my cup of tea either (and I won't go see 'em - but that's the only thing we agree on. regardless of what you think - they have a right to continue "as Queen" - it's working and still selling, and lots of people enjoy it - so leave it be. your problem is this ^ is *your b-all and end-all* - no Freddie = no Queen. that's BS and it's unhealthy (for you) - you're spending too much negative energy and bile on something that doesn't matter. i left here a few years ago - and on returning YOU ARE still repeating yourself. no one cares. drop it. and if you're talking "plastic queen" - at least try to get your comparator right. Montreux was *just about* as "plastic" and "fake" as the original Queen lineup could ever be. |

What's plastic and embarrassing to you is fun and a good time to others so why spend time bothering about something that doesn't even matter in the scheme of things and that ultimately you can't change - makes zero sense to me. |

Basically my take on Q+AL is that I accept it as a legacy act. Adam Lambert is actually a good singer in that he's technically proficient. Whether or not one likes the sound of his voice, or whether or not one thinks he's a good fit for Queen is a matter of opinion, open for debate and everyone has the right to think what they want. I have no gripe with Q+AL, and since I am too young to have seen Freddie live I'm glad they have been touring, because it gave me an opportunity I wouldn't have otherwise had. The show they do, in my opinion, is very good. It's worthy of their legacy, and it's way better than seeing any tribute act. Brian and Roger can still play, albeit it seems a bit more tame than it was. I also accept that it's more musical theatre now, and Adam Lambert does look more like a rock star parody than an actual rock star at times. That's fine. Freddie often looked ridiculous and he knew it. I appreciate there are some things that can't happen with the Q+AL tour - the vocal improvisations can't happen, the crowd probably wouldn't respond to it warmly. In fact there were a couple of things that happened at the O2 in 2017 that I felt didn't go down as well although I enjoyed the show. I don't share the view - Brian May's view - that Freddie would be, in any way, jealous of Adam Lambert. I think he would be impressed by his technique, although he might not like the sound of Lambert's voice but that's open to speculation. Freddie knew he was exceptional, but was also painfully aware of his live limitations that did sometimes get to him. Things are also very different now. Adam Lambert has vocal coaches and continuous training to help him produce a certain sound, a homogenised sound yes, that is the standard production tone in musical theatre and perhaps some pop music. He's very good at it. Freddie came from a time of individuality, and wasn't trained by someone who could show him how to avoid nodules for instance. That didn't exist in pop music until perhaps after Freddie stopped touring although it was in musical theatre before then. Freddie did actually find out a lot of things by himself that made him a better singer, and he was constantly evolving, learning how to use his phenomenal instrument. I also think the singing on the Barcelona and Innuendo LPs represent a kind of pinnacle in Freddie's voice that is still unmatched by many or any singers since. I like to imagine that had Freddie somehow survived to be able to tour again after the 4.5 years between the end of the magic tour and the release of Innuendo, that it would have been his finest tour to date - but that didn't happen. |

Queen are a parody of themselves except Brian is too blinkered to see that.for someone who calls themselves a queen fan you seem to grasp very little. for most of the 80s Freddie was ambivalent about the band. Roger and John were writing the lion's share of the big hits. Freddie's death DID bring the band together. the Tribute concert and the 1998 single being examples. John couldn't carry on after that and chose to retire - he was practically a recluse when he was in the band anyway. the current line-up of queen is the ONLY going concern - and though I have no liking for it at all, it's their right to continue, and - MORE IMPORTANTLY....I am f**king ecstatic that THEY DO CONTINUE. why? because it leaves me safe in the absolute knowledge that every single day they continue as Queen - it consumes YOUR EVERY WAKING MOMENT to the point that it eats you up inside, frustrates you and compels your utterly pointless modus operandi to forge on in vain, refusing to accept the futility of your preaching, and banner waving. and better still, the knowledge that your protests have no effect whatsoever. just for that alone - I hope Brian, Roger, Adam and any other singer they recruit will continue for ten more years. gasman...Gasman...G-A-S-M-A-N ! |

Posting from his level of consciousness, education and understanding, this comment can in no way be taken as serious. Jazz+ through this thread you, have again, said a great deal but in reality said nothing but what is at best worthless and ultimately retreads old ground in your attempts to place your hero on a plinth and degrade any views that don't match your own. You have reached new lows in your attempted put downs of certain members. You again, Jazz+, have proved to have learned nothing and will continue to do so. The Circle of Eidolon has spoken, there is no argument. |

You could turn over a new leaf, but you probably won't. Aside from your many spelling mistakes - which include basic literacy errors; "your" in place of "you're", "their", "there" and "they're" in all the wrong places etc, there is ONE key aspect of your written work that beggars belief: Your absolute inability to locate and hit the comma, colon, semi-colon and hyphen keys for whole paragraphs at a time. |

Jazz+ wrote:because it is just a casual drop in site for people who admire Queen ( not to sure why you are here though?) If yo are so perfect in your life then why come on this site for then?Queen used to be my favourite band. I still am a huge fan. But they're not the b-all and end-all of music, and certainly not infallible (by a long chalk). I come here to talk music with like-minded people with a common interest, and there's the added bonus of daily amusement - where your banal utterances pervade (otherwise) intelligent airspace. |

@Brenski Well i come on here hoping someone supports the band i love but i only get idiots like you who make a mockery of the greatest rock and roll band ever. I guess you will dismiss the fact that Freddie is the greatest male vocalist ever but i do not really care about your limp views because the world agrees with me. Oh and by the way 60 years of the official charts confirm that Queen Greatest Hits is the biggest ever UK album ever. That will do me and dismiss the crap of U2 AC/DC Oasis etc....... Many of the rock and pop artists are jealous of Queen and that is why many never talk about them. |

Intelligent adult human beings should be able to discern (objectively) the good and not so good in things - particularly music, books, films and other art forms. your inability to see anything but perfection in everything Queen did shows a lacking, that has undoubtedly held you back for some time. you are honestly 100% sure that the world agrees with you? 7 billion people all think Queen are the greatest band ever? utter tosh. for long periods of my life Queen have been my favourite band, but they're NOT the greatest. I like to think that my own objectivity allows me to accept that the Beatles and Zeppelin were greater bands. |
Star* 29.11.2019 16:48 |
@Brenski The Beatles nor Zeppelin were as clever as Queen and no where as polished or sophisticated. You take your own opinions as gospel and that is fair enough but i have seen loads of polls and Queen are always way ahead of the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin.... The Beatles were not even together for ten years and only a glorified boy band at the beginning, there true constructive peak was near towards the end anyway. The fact is if Queen never had Freddie on board then there would never have been a band like Queen in the first place, he was the most intelligent member of the band for everything really, looks, direction of music, outfits and designing the Queen crest. I think he did leave Brian quite jealous at one point! Again Freddie blew all the acts off the Live Aid stage in 1985 because he was the greatest performer of all time. Even Elton said to Fred after the performance " You bastard you stole the show" He was right Freddie could out do anyone easily. |

I think he did leave Brian quite jealous at one point! This entire post, yet again, is your confirmation bias in full force. Look up that term, because you probably don't know what it means. I'll even provide a link for you: https://lmgtfy.com/?q=confirmation+bias It means seeking information that coalesces with your views, and rejecting anything that does not. Assuming you are not going to grasp this basic concept any time soon, brace yourself for the latest episode of you having your ass handed to you. "The Beatles nor Zeppelin were as clever as Queen and no where as polished or sophisticated." The Beatles had 4 and 8 track technology to work with, while Queen had 16 and 24. But despite their technological limitations, Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road still stand up against any of Queen's best material. The Beatles are the most important entertainers of the last century, and wrote the book for virtually everyone who came after them - in terms of songwriting, conceptualizing, blending genres, fashion, and countless other aspects of both music and life. And the first two Led Zeppelin albums were the blueprint for the next several decades of what rock music would become. Regardless of one's personal tastes, these are basic facts that literally every music historian worth their salt agrees on. But a music historian you are not. Of course none of this makes sense to you because it doesn't align with your dogmatic views of Queen, so I'll speak in a language you seem to understand - aligning your personal views with the public's: the US sales of Led Zeppelin IV outweigh the worldwide sales of any single Queen album. And your predictable jab at Brian was right on schedule, as you continue to feel the need to bully others to justify your point of view. You have the cognitive abilities of a child. Take a deep breath, be humble, and know when you're just plain wrong. |

No, they are just having fun with another idiot that is completely blind to himself. If the idiot knew he was an idiot he would not be one. No-one but you can make you realize how dumb you are and that is what makes you that dumb. You think you have mastered it all but you just cant see outside of your tiny box that you think is life and the world. You. Are. Blind. Nothing more, nothing less. People like you are to be pitied cause of everything you will never be able to discover about yourself and the meaning life could have for you. You are hollow, a shell of a man, a going nowhere waste of existence. And of course you cant understand this, will see it as an attack or whatever. But that doesnt change a thing or make it less true. Truth will bring you happiness and really Gerry, are you happy? Are you even brave enough to ask that question to yourself? As long as you keep behaving like you do, we all know the answer to that one. Sad. |

Ignoring him doesn't work - If anything it encourages him. At least by responding in kind, (somewhere) in the dark recesses of his mind he has to wonder deep down - "why are they doing this?" And, but, also, (how about that for a Gerryism - three conjunctions to start a sentence), your preachy, sanctimonious response to those refusing to let his actions go unchecked, actually galvanises his stupidity and aggression. There can only be one of two possible reasons for your intervention: 1. You're the one liking to feel truly superior, or 2. You're Gerry's long-lost brother and husband. |
