Queen Live at Earls Court 6.6.1977 audio upgrade(a.k.a remaster) This is my attempt to upgrade the audio of this great concert which i want it to try enhance the cause i want it to do something else this tine in my free time as well. The goal was to bring some air, space and better live feel to the audio and keep the hiss under control. This is made from 2 sources, 1st is from "antiden dvd version(Timecode)" for 1st hour of show and 2nd source used for 2nd half of show (because of quality drop on 1st source) is "keep dancing" kindly obtained by Pittrek. Special thanky you goes to everyone who gave me feedback in general discussion thread(i made for some reason :D) and especially to Pittrek who kindly share with me "keep dancing" source. Stuff that i did to the audio was mostly eq work, slight compression, reverb, volume normalization and other small things not worth mentioning i guess. So...i hope you going to have some fun with this and please do not bootleg this and keep it for free share. Have fun :) File info: Flac 24bit, 44100hz 705MB Setlist: Procession, a day at the races overture Tie Your Mother Down Ogre Battle White Queen (As It Began) Somebody to Love Killer Queen Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy The Millionaire Waltz You're My Best Friend Bring Back That Leroy Brown Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to…) Sweet Lady Doing All Right Brighton Rock '39 You Take My Breath Away White Man The Prophet's Song Bohemian Rhapsody Keep Yourself Alive Stone Cold Crazy In the Lap of the Gods... Was Chief Mouse's restoration not good enough to use? It would have been good to have that upgraded so it could be multiplexed into the file as an alternate sound option. |

At start i dont even believe that im going to finish this so i didnt make good source research and antiden one was right on my hand. |

You already said that this is YOUR attempt to a new remaster. Don't have to defensively explain why you don't know about other remasters. |
Marlamir 18.11.2019 16:14 |
Jeez Aristide! You probably didn't really understand what i meant in prevoious post. |
montanasz 18.11.2019 16:21 |
thanks for sharing and your efforts! |

Jeez Marlamir! You probably didn't really understand that I was defending you (against others). But it seems that I can't defend you against yourself. If you still have some energy left after all the "eq work, slight compression, reverb, volume normalization and other" then please tell me that you don't regret you didn't start your work with Chief Mouse version. Because it's wrong, both technically end ethically, to "remaster" a remaster. |
Marlamir 18.11.2019 17:09 |
Jeesus i understand now, fuck I'm really really stupid sometimes, fuck me. But yes i fully agree with what you said, it would be weird to remaster a "remaster" i'm happy with the current output and don't regret anythyng. I'm sorry Aristide for the previous post. |

Marlamir, it would of course always be best to start with a raw transfer of the best available lossless source, which in this case might be the VHS tape I mentioned previously. |
Marlamir 18.11.2019 23:01 |
That's sounds obvious, i keep that in mind for next time (if there will be some of course). I checked the audio on greg's channel and it's really sound pretty well, do you know if the vhs made it to public? |
The Real Wizard 18.11.2019 23:13 |
Here's a good copy to start with - the aforementioned Miracle Express VHS (whoever that was, once upon a time): https://we.tl/t-2CRyXKZtUF You did a great job with what you had, so looking forward to see what you come up with using this. Ignore the forum trolls who just complain and can't bother to actually help in some way. |

Thank you Real Wizard for your kind words, here is quick processed sample from source you send me. |

The Real Wizard wrote: Ignore the forum trolls who just complain and can't bother to actually help in some way.I don't see any of that going on here, quite the contrary in fact. There seems to be a little confusion about the Miracle Express VHS tape as the VHS tape (Queen Keep Dancing) might be essentially the same. |

Thank you for the first share. It sounds clearer at some moments, especially the piano moments. The drums parts sound, I don't know ho to say this in English, it sounds like there is some slightly louder hiss sound for -and sorry I don't know exactly what part of the drum kit I'm talking about- the ?cymbals? (at least the metallic "plates" in the drum kit). I'm really sorry for not being able to explain what I mean. Your work is really enjoyable anyway. About the flac file and the quick processing you've done, Mercury's voice sounds quite "metallic", but maybe this is the original sound of the tape. I can't wait to hear what you will do with it. Anyway, thank you for your work like what you had done for Hyde park. One last question. If i'm not mistaken, I have downloaded this recording from the (RIP) queen database, the Pittrek rermaster for the audio or from Chief mouse video for the video show but there is a kind of humming or buzzing sound all along, whatever the version. It seems to me I can't hear that hum or buzz sound in the background of your processing and in the document posted by the Real Wizard. Am I getting so old I can't hear it or is is free of that humming sound? |
brunolezouf 19.11.2019 10:20 |
A second post, sorry for being so talkative. From what I've heard in the before/ after, it seems that sometimes the recording loses some "depth". It's less "messy" at some moments, I mean that your upagrade seems to have kind of "brought to light" some parts but at the same time "emptied" it a little, you know, like a fm radio set to emphasise voices. (this is for the DOTL intro) I guess this is the trade off in every choice because, int the before after comparison, some parts have, on the contrary gained depth. (the rest of the DOTL excerpt). In tte BR intro, it seems that Mercury's voice and his piano are a little flattened by the process, the "bass" sounds are lower, taking a bit of life out of it and at the same time putting Mercury's voice "at the front". I really like the result of your processing in the "Now' I'm here, Now I'm there" part of NIH but when the rock really starts, it seems again that some energy has been lost. Again, this is only my opinion but it might help as a feedback. Thank you for your work again. |

Despite the links posted on this thread, I still think a RAW transfer from the VHS tape is what you need to get try and get hold of Marlamir. Ask about and you might get one, and you can start from scratch, otherwise you will end up wasting a lot time and effort. You did a decent enough job on the raw audio transfer of my Hyde Park VHS tape, which also suffered from wow and flutter (despite being a first gen copy from QTV). A raw transfer of the Earls Court tape would offer you a much easier project to improve upon, with potentially much better results. A little known fact is that the first public screening of the Earls Court concert was at 2pm on April 23rd 1988 during a UK Queen Convention (yes, I have kept all the schedules :-D). It was in turn filmed at considerable distance from the big screen in the Ballroom (with the aid of a tripod). I might add this all was done in full view, and without any objections: link |

Thank you Brunolezouf for your big feedback. I realy welcome and apreciate your opinion, many people have different taste for how audio should sound and what like one the other one doesnt. Thanks again. Kurgan thank you for the valuable info, i don't really feel and want to start on another audio project. I'm happy with the current output plus i will wouldn't put much effort to it. I no longer have much interest at those kind of project, this was like "shot in the dark". Is pretty crazy to know that you was able to record that without any objection i thought those thing aren't allowed on those events. no wonder the footage got leaked. |
. 19.11.2019 14:15 |
No problem Marlamir, you improved upon the sources you did work on and that's what matters. Only problem I see is that in this case you used a lossy source to begin with. By the way, I didn't make the screen recording, but was sat next to the person who did. Things have changed a lot since 1988, back then it wasn't a concern I guess. A direct VHS transfer of Earls Court was made from the source tape and eventually emerged years later. it's that transfer that now circulates in its various guises and generations. They all stem from the same source tape as in the clip (note the drop out in sound at 1:16). The ground loop buzz / hum is also present on the source tape during the procession intro, and no doubt this is how it sounded to the audience on the night. |

Ohh aha, i thought that was you who record that stuff. Very interesting story |

The Kurgan wrote: Despite the links posted on this thread, I still think a RAW transfer from the VHS tape is what you need to get try and get hold of Marlamir.Frank's transfer is probably as good as it's gonna get - it was directly from the VHS, probably a second gen or so from the master. How did this get out, anyway? It was so hush hush at the time. |
aristide1 19.11.2019 16:45 |
It wasn't a raw transfer, if I remember correctly. He shared a version eqed by him in the straightforward German style (by turning something, a knob... or a valve). Like Mack, who remastered in only one night some of Queen reissues from 1985 The Complete Works LPs (no proof of this but it might have happened, considering the economical high-shelf eq used by him on this particular project). |
. 19.11.2019 18:37 |
^ Cryptic, even by your standards! OK, I checked all my versions and found a second lossless transfer frank39 made of his VHS copy. From the notes it says only the record level was adjusted, as it was too high the first time around. There is no mention of any EQ adjustment, and the ground loop hum is present, so this one seems to be a RAW transfer. If you check the lineage and share notes for his original share in the link below, he says "I didn't remaster it, I didn't change anything from the original tape". link |
