everyone is misinformed, including Brian May and Roger Taylor. Just the video published by queen official just hit 1 billion views. There are many videos of Bohemian Rhapsody on you tube that total has over 2 billion views so peeps meed to understand

It's kind of sad that Bohemian Rhapsody is only at 1B and Despacito has almost 6B (last time I checked)
Well... I suppose there are songs which some people (myself included) may consider better than 'Bo Rhap' which have 166.67 M views or less (ca. same ratio as 'Despacito' : 'Bohemian Rhapsody'), which would also be 'sad', though probably not in the same way.
Their numbers do have a different meaning. Pop culture is something to be absorbed by the masses who usually stick to what comes out in the present instead of looking back at past brilliance.
And most people don't judge a newly released piece on it's brilliance. It's much more superficial and to me it looks like superficial has reached a whole new level these days.
Research has been done recently and it really looks like the music industry has figured out how to indoctrinate the masses into liking a certain type of music / song. Repeating certain sounds, melodies, rhythms and (in my opinion cheap) production values creates an affinity in the brain so it will positively react to it in other songs. They have figured out how to make the masses buy the same thing over and over and over. No more innovating, no more brilliance, no more intelligent writing or composing. It's the same kind of thing every time. Just look back at the quite recent 90's. Much more difference in the kinds of songs that were tried and gained popularity. The music industry has come to it's logical and very boring peak. For the first time in history, we are truly right when we say that it used to be better in the past. And this fucking sucks.
70’s and 80’s and most of the 90’s the only way to hear or see a song is buy it. Today people have you tube and many other ways to watch or listen to music free and whenever and whatever mood he/she is in. Of course you will see more views of current music when they are hits, fans of musicians can look back at anything they want but whatever is current is hot and allows the whole world to view it free anytime anywhere.
The accessibility of music has indeed become much easier but what is being listened to is still mostly dependent on what is new and recently marketed. But there is a huge difference in what kind of music is being listened to and how much diversity in types of songs there are in current pup music. That part of our Western culture (and also other parts) has become much more homogeneous than it ever was.

It never fails to amuse me how some people equate youtube views with record sales as if they are the same thing :D
While it's not the same thing, it does add up to an artist's income if you factor in ads and stuff. So, sure, it's not 'equal' (which is what the verb 'to equate' entails) but it's kind of related.
A billion views, if accompanied by ads, could for a top tier you tube contributor (Which I'm sure Queen Official is) earn somewhere between $1.5 million and $5 million.
Not chicken Feed, but not easy to get to either.
But it does explain why Queen occasionally go round cutting off fan uploads of Official videos. It is worth their while financially to do a purge every now and then.
A young you tube channel with no negotiation power earns about 55% of revenue of $3 per 1000 Ad views.
Only about 80% of you tube views bring up an ad. (Various reasons including ad blocking software)
So for a 1000 views, you can earn 55% of 80% of $3. which is $1.32.
$660 for a half million views
$1320 for a million.
You pretty much need a half million subscribers and produce multiple videos a week to have it as a reasonable source of income.
but of course most major You tubers don't have it as their sole source of income.
Youtube is a pretty great indicator of popularity since, in general, when a person these days wants to hear a specific song and they don't have it in local storage and they don't pay for a streaming service, they look it up on Youtube to hear it.
To see the greatest flix videos in their best quality.
The laser disc versions are the best by a mile.
The videos look better on laserdisc than on VHS or DVD.
If anyone wants to watch greatest flix on laserdisc you can find a transfer of it on bit torrent. Which comes in at about 50gb.
