link Queen - Jazz (1978) “Of course A Night At The Opera is brilliant. But what I recall as a kid was that my brother and I would throw around the vinyl copy of that album as a frisbee. There was never any disrespect intended, but that’s just what happened. “Now, Jazz… that always seemed to be on the turntable whenever my parents had a party. It’s one of my earliest memories of those parties, actually. So, in a way I was brought up on it. Of course, the fact that there was a poster inside the album with lots of naked girls riding bicycles has nothing whatsoever to do with my love for this album. It’s all about the music to me!” |

Let me just channel the mainstream of opinion here on QZ: How DARE he like Jazz. You can't like Jazz. You have to hate it, it's crap, despite the fact that it's got great songs. The production is 'terrible', despite the fact that it's the kind of sound that was really popular in the late '70s. None of the members of Queen liked Jazz, none of the fans like it. Nobody ever bought the album, apart from some perverts who just wanted the poster. In fact, it's not even a Queen-album, it's all a hoax. Jazz never happened! On a more serious note: I think there would be a different kind of response here (apart from mooghead, who would whine regardless of what the subject was) if he'd picked any other Queen-album other than Hot Space or Flash Gordon. I honestly don't get the hate against Jazz, which is a fine album and by any reasonable definition much better than The Game, which never gets such flack. |

Yeah, Jazz is one of my favs. The fact he also selected a Cardiacs record too - a class act. |

This is Justin back in 2013, a few seconds before he accidentally bonked me on the head with his Gibson. At least, I think it was an accident. As for Jazz, why not? Great album, Sound's a bit muddy but the songs, playing etc are classic Queen. |

The Game is a classier Queen album than Jazz and has sophistication oozing from every track! i love it ! Play the Game, Crazy Little Thing, Save Me , Sail Away Sweet Sister, Dragon Attack etc ........ knockout. |

Jazz is not the worst album - but not as great as Queen II through News of the World, or maybe only in my opinion, The Game and Innuendo. I'd pick Jazz over Hot Space through The Miracle and Made In Heaven. As much as the running order and production of Jazz sucks, it has enough variety that does make it a fun listen every now and again. |

Jazz is a great album, it has many elements of early Queen sound like fairy fellers master stroke part on Bicycle race, keep yourself alive on Dead on time, big vocals, guitar orchestrations on dreamers balls. But also many experimental stuff. In terms of writing is better than NOTW, it suffers from production which makes the songs sound less good than the really are. Roger didn't like the sound as the others did. His songs suffer the most due to band engineering. The Game has very good production and is a step towards to more radio friendly songs. Back in late 70s the industry wanted more radio friendly songs. It was a changing Era in music business. |

Queen album i detest the most is "Made In Heaven" over produced and it sounds plastic and cheesy. Jazz, Hot Space etc..... are great Queen albums in there own rights but have different directions and feel to them so surely that does not make them bad albums. I always admire a band wanting to try new things. |
dysan 23.04.2019 06:57 |
Why didn't you just say that first then instead of trying to get a reaction by arguing with yourself? |

Jazz was never my favourite album but the older I am the more I like it. I definitely pick it over Miracle, but maybe I'm not old enough to appreciate the Miracle and this time will come too :) It has some very strange atmosphere, I can't describe it properly. But it is very different compared to any other album released before and after - it kind of stands in its own cathegory. It doesn't mean it is bad, it is just different. |

Jazz is great, it's the last of the classic bombastic over the top sounding Queen albums. Up to that point they were still trying, and succeeding, to be different. The Game less so, they became followers of what was current, simpler production. Play The Game and Sail Away Sweet Sister had echoes of old. I still like and play it but not as much as what had come before. The rest of he 80's to me was patchy though Inuendo was a return to form and Made In Heaven I thought was a brilliant piece of work made under ont ideal conditions but somehow retained the over the top production of the early albums while not sounding like it was of that period. |

Jazz's production is very late-70's Roy Thomas Baker. In fact, while producing Journey's "Infinity" album, the first to feature Steve Perry on vocals, Journey's manager complained about Roy's technique of running the tracks through his own personal mixer, sending them at very hot levels to the tape machine which hyped the sound considerably but also introduced hiss and added a thin element to the tracks.. In fact, Journey's manager noted that Baker was peaking every meter on his own personal mixer before the tracks went to tape. Check out any of the tracks from "Infinity" and you'll hear a sonic thread that carries on through Jazz. |
Star* 25.04.2019 06:10 |
Yeah so sad that Queen's JAZZ album was a bit over produced but i wonder what it would have been like if Mack had produced it, would the sound and production be as good as The Game perhaps? |
dysan 25.04.2019 06:49 |
Depends if you have a problem with the production really. I like it - it's just a distinctive sound. I think it's more a case if they recorded it in familiar surroundings. But then it would miss out on the environmental factors which make it so unique material-wise. |
bucsateflon 25.04.2019 07:50 |
Many of you dumb asses are just sheep, if 2 or 3 idiots said an album sucks or a song or a concert, you immediately jump on the bandwagon, creating a false hype. |

So what are your thoughts on Jazz? |
bucsateflon 25.04.2019 10:36 |
"If You Can't Beat Them" is the only garbage song on that album, unlike "The Game" which has multiple utter garbage songs |
dysan 25.04.2019 10:39 |
You know what, I've really been digging that tune recently for the first time since I first heard the album way back but I see what you mean. |
Star* 25.04.2019 10:52 |
Bucstateflon Are you a real Queen fan or do you come on here to slag the bands classic albums? Jazz & The Game albums are classic and still better than anything in the album charts today by miles. |

Java wrote: Yeah so sad that Queen's JAZZ album was a bit over produced but i wonder what it would have been like if Mack had produced it, would the sound and production be as good as The Game perhaps? It's no more over produced than any of the first five albums. Thinking about the point made about Journey and thinking back to ANATO the top end on that album within the mix sounds quite harsh and almost brittle, but ADATR and NOTW have a less harsh though dry top end and a warmer sounding low and mid. Over all to me they sound better than ANATO (production wise) so it seems strange that Roy Thomas Baker would be asked to produce Jazz. I'm not sure Mack's production would have worked on Jazz I certainly don't think something like Bicycle Race would have worked with his simpler approach. As an example the backing vocals on Play The Game are great and really well recorded but have less ambience and a tighter closer sound than Queen typically achieved prior to that. As for Jazz, I really like the album though it's not my favourite sounding album nd The Game is great because it went somewhere new and did it well |
Star* 25.04.2019 10:58 |
Why should a song have anything to do with a production process then? Mack may have made "Bicycle Race" better than Roy, we will never know now. |
dysan 25.04.2019 11:13 |
I don't think Jazz could've been made using drum loops like much of The Game and Hot Space. |
Star* 25.04.2019 15:35 |
I am not bothered about drum loops its the quality of the songs that count for me. The Miracle album was the start of Queen's demise sadly as the brilliant songwriting was starting to dry up. |
bucsateflon 25.04.2019 16:03 |

Star* 25.04.2019 18:35 |
Exactly both albums are brilliant in there own way and Freddie & the boys were on fire on both. 1978 to 1980 Queen produced some fantastic tunes. |
