Have any of you been issued with a backdated VAT invoice?
Apparently, they forgot to charge VAT on their invoices for three months and are asking sellers to make a one-off payment to cover the mistake. Has this happened to you, too?
As far as I'm aware, UK buyers have no obligation to pay backdated VAT if a company has made a mistake. We can consider the initial amount to have included VAT if there was no seperate VAT line on the bill.
I've been hit with a request to pay quite an amount in one go. I didn't know they hadn't charged the VAT as they bill in USD and the exchange rate isn't always the same. I always pay on time.
Would you pay it retrospectively? They're just assuming that we can afford to foot the bill, in one go. There is no pay-up scheme and as I say, don't think we're actually obliged.
"As far as I'm aware, UK buyers have no obligation to pay backdated VAT if a company has made a mistake"
You only need to clarify this. If you can you are laughing.
I've checked my bills and it appears the feckers did actually charge the VAT, but just didn't list it as a separate unit. Okay, it's a few pennies out on the exchange rate, but it's clearly been paid. They're trying to double charge by teh looks of it. Whether this is intentional or not, I'm not sure - but they've been told there will be no further payment from me.
They didn't even apologise for the "error". Just a "We forgot - here's your new bill".
