Queen London, England Wembley Arena September 4, 1984 This alternate source of the first of four nights at Wembley Arena is a considerable upgrade. Although it's a direct copy of the master tape, it has unfortunately been converted to mp3, and this is all the taper would let out. After doing a couple slight fixes, I converted it to FLAC for the sake of not losing quality - but this is NOT lossless. It's the best existing source of this show, either way. There is a bit of tape warble in the last couple tracks. Otherwise the sound is stable and excellent. Thanks to Harry for tape, and the taper for the transfer ! Thanks! Sounds distorted. Not bad, but wouldn't describe this sound as excellent. Not even for an 80s tape. |

Haha that's true. I tape a lot of shows and with modern days equipment distortion doesn't really happen (if you know how to properly use your gear). Guess I have bootleg ears as well. The show is still nice to have in the collection for 'Not Fade Away' Thanks again :) |

I guess you will have to ask the taper why some people only got a lossy transfer with distortion. |
aristide1 13.08.2018 10:49 |
There are at least two more mundane explanations for the distorted sound. 1. The master tape did not survived as well as your copy. This is the point of making safety copies. 2. The taper made some eq which enhanced the distorsions. |

I've actually heard a transfer of the copy in question - it's not nearly as good as this. I just thought I'd play along for a while to see if the bear wanted to come out and play. I guess not. |

This is the result I get from my transfer when I gradually boost the range from 1000 Hz and higher to the point of distortion. link My conclusion is somebody did the something similar with this share, thus causing the distortion. The same (clean and lossless) source has been traded since the 80's, and has been in circulation for over 30 years (since the day the TAPER let it out). link I'm unclear as to whether "Harry" actually has a 2nd generation copy in tape form, or if he was given an mp3 transfer, or who may of introduced the distortion. Whatever the case, if you ask the very capable aristide1 nicely, perhaps he will try and reverse engineer the distortion for your pleasure. |
Harry_queenrecordings 16.08.2018 06:19 |
This lossy transfer I once got from the taper (more than 10 years ago) were two long mp3 files on two CDRs (as data, not audio). He said that he taped it and tried to transfer it to digital and send me the thing. When I got the files I found out it was just an mp3 transfer. When I asked for a better (lossless) transfer, I never got any reply back.. I believe that he had no any clue how to make a decent transfer back then, or he was simply lying and shared a bad version with distortion on purpose. Or perhaps he was not even the taper.. I guess we will never find out. |
. 16.08.2018 07:03 |
Thank you for the reply and for the information you have provided, so ultimately: It cannot be confirmed that he was the taper. It cannot be confirmed that it is a direct transfer from the master tape. It cannot be confirmed who did the transfer. It cannot be confirmed if the actual taper was ever involved in supplying the CDR's to you. If you want my opinion, it isn't a direct transfer from the master. |
Harry_queenrecordings 16.08.2018 07:50 |
Well, of course, most things can never be 100% confirmed :-), but yes it's for sure that some things are questionable in this case. |
Chinwonder2 16.08.2018 15:40 |
Whilst on the topic of '84 gigs, is anyone able to tell me if this is anything significant. I downloaded it from here, I can't figure out what source it comes from. It's a recording from the last Birmingham show: Here's a download link: link link I doubt it's an upgrade but who knows... -Chin |

Chinwonder2 wrote: I doubt it's an upgrade but who knows...Yep, your instincts were right. Same old version. First 3/4 of the show sounds great, and the last few songs are purposely degraded. |
