It's quite lyrically and musically simple, to be honest it seems quite lazy to me. I'm a big fan of Roger's songs but I never really liked this one.
Plus, it pales in comparison to the rest of the album. An okay song, when compared to a load of masterpieces, suddenly seems a lot worse.
No hate...I Just don't think It's a very good song. Some of Roger stuff tends to grow on me over time, but not loser In The End. Doesn't fit Queen2 at all. Listen to Modern Times on the first record, a perfect fit. Same with Tenament Funster on Sheer Heart Attack. Two great ones from Roger.
Maybe the reason that it 'doesn't fit' is just why it's there in the first place; it's called contrast. It's a nice, fat kick in the face after the lush sounds of the previous tracks. Funny How Love Is there for the same reason.
I share all the pros and cons expressed here. It's not a great track, but is fine in context really. If the call was either See What a fool vs LITE I think they called right.
Loser in the End is like when your idiot half brother wearing a Kiss t-shirt wanders into the family photograph: everyone is embarrassed but no one wants to rock the boat by shoving him out of frame.
Nonsense!....Action this Day is better, Back Chat is better, under pressure is better, words of Love is better. Cool Cat is better. Just because a song has heavy guitar and drums Doesn't make it good.
"Nonsense!....Action this Day is better, Back Chat is better, under pressure is better, words of Love is better. Cool Cat is better"
Ok, I will bite.
Define 'better'.
Staying on topic......I am more than fine with the song, it's placement, the lyrics....'almost' everything except......the drums! The mix doesn't match the rest of the album.
It makes side white not flow well. Like Dysan said...if it was a non-album b-side for Seven Seas of Rhye then we'd be loving it more. I actually like the song and it's sentiment and it's Rogers answer to Brians "ode to daddy".

I know It's subjective...He said loser was much better than anything on Hot Space. I simply disagreed.
There was a day last week, where it sounded like a pretty great mock blues track.
I still don't get the bit about someone being or getting looser in the end.
Maybe it was a gay commentary
Things is musically It has nice stuff in it....but like I said before, just because it has loud drums and guitar Doesn't make the actual song good...Rush newest album clockwork Angels is like that for me...I know It's a fan favorite and has loads of musical talent..ripping drums, bass lines at It's best. Alex sounds great on guitar, but saying all that I only like 4 songs on the whole album. Most of the songs don't grab me. Relax Rush Fans, I know the Gardening is a great one ....
I'm a Rush fan. I listened to Clockwork Angels on my stereo system once. That was enough. It's just noise. I don't know if the musicianship is good. I can't hear it over the din.
I think the loud drums and guitar makes this song good, I hated hot space when it was first released and must admit still do so today, but it"s each to their own which is good because it would be boring if everyone liked the same stuff.
I'm not a fan of Hot Space...I'm a huge fan of Queen 2. I'm only saying they're are songs on Hot Space that I like better than Loser In The End, which is the only song I don't like on that album....See What A Fool I'v been is much better. Especially live.
i think that LITE shows up a good contrast to SDOD. as being placed at the end of the first side of the LP (does anybody listen to vinyls anymore) doesn't make it offensive as you can skip it anyway.
The lyrics... well... there were worse in their history.
the song's a straight rocker. and it makes totally sense in getting a (album listening) audience being somewhat more interested on the 2nd side of the album. it's an outro. and for me it works.
maybe i'm a little bit too 'old fashioned'.
.
and in comparisation to "hot space" there's ... .. . (WTF!?!?!?!) . .. ... some of you compare queen II with hot space ? SRSLY ? different time. different style. different ambition. great aswell. but for other reasons (my favourite is "dancer" ;-) )
.
personally i think FHLI is more annoying because of that wall of sound. while everything else on this album is so clearly defined.
.
i don't get the fuzz about this LITE. it's great. a simple straight number with some potentionally cheesy lyrics. is it better to sing about ogres ? hummm. just thinking. :-)
Good post. I agree about ending side 1. The fade out (which is excellent) worked perfectly as the end of a side.
RE the lyrics - they sounded quite powerful when I was little. Knowledgeable.
Something I've forgotten about - I used to think it was very similar to the (not very similar) Arnold Corns version of Moonage Daydream. Stuttering and kinda jangly fuzz.
