70s LA band The Quick were excellent and I'd suggest anyone into intricate Sparks / Queen glam check them out.
Indeed, although not my favourite tune - the intro on this could've inspired part of the Flash battle scene: link
Anyhooo. This bit on their latest reissue press release caught my eye:
'Johnny Rotten saw The Quick at the Whisky, as did Roger Taylor and Brian May. (Brian May forced his card upon Hufsteter and insisted that he call him, but he did not.)'
I can imagine BM and RT were impressed. There's a story about BM pestering Mick Ronson after a Spiders From Mars gig in '72 about how he got his sound. Do you think he was still a guitar fanboy in 76 / 77? Great if so. I have no reason to doubt this story but what did his card say?
Would've been nice if Queen had offered the band support slot. Maybe he should've phoned.
Very interesting story and song. There are definitely a couple hints of Flash Gordon tracks in there.
I wouldn't be surprised if Brian indeed wanted these guys to open for Queen. They were a decent and complimentary band. He was throwing them a bone.
Don't wanna call a rock star back? Then he'll pinch your song. Welcome to the music biz. History is written by the winners.
I started making a spoof 'Brian's' hair salon card for this thread utilising Brian's image from the Hot Space cover with 'Tel: Knightsbridge 766' but you know...

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, I'm listening to their compilation "Untold Rock Stories" right now on Spotify and The Quick are excellent indeed! The similarity with Sparks is uncanny...
Great to hear. Yes - those demos are ace. If you find any live stuff on youtube do have a listen. Is it the version of 'Untold Rock..'with Master Race and Blackout on the end? My two absolute favs.
"Untold Rock Stories" is my personal favourite and i am hooked up to it right now on Spotify. I had some Brian May's old pictures which i wanted to upload but those were in TIFF.Some one referred Onlinve convert Free to convert TIFF to JPEG. That did the job. if anyone needs link
