I didn't really enjoy watching 70s Queen concerts before because the quality was not very good and I have downloaded Earl's court 77, Houston 77, Rainbow 74 and this is really impressive. I know this has been asked for before so I may as well mention it too... 'Days Of Our Lives promo' in OAR 4:3. Does this exist officially at all in decent quality? i.e. better than VHS? The best I have is a SVHS recording from VH1. Surely someone must have at least a DVR/PVR recording in OAR? |

@Chief Mouse Just a quick suggestion... For the promo clips would it be possible to add about 5 seconds of leader blank video at the start or use the cover to the single which they used in the original Flix DVD? The reason I ask is when playing directly from either of my NAS drives it can take between 3-5 seconds for it to 'stabilise' before i see any pic or hear any audio. It does this with ALL video clips, including my own home videos (not just the Queen stuff). I'm sure other NAS users have a similar issue? I've tried adding my own inserts but am having trouble joining the clips seamlessly especially when you add a remuxed DTS audio track into the mix and if it's 'non compliant'! It would be easier for users to remove the leader for those who didnt want it than lioke me trying to add it! Unless you can suggest a way of doing it? I have all the usual 'muxer tools' and some commercial apps etc but they are fussy about and usually require a re-encode . Many thanks |

Because they have different audio streams. Through the years I've added everything from WAV, FLAC, M4A, AC3, AAC. All of them play fine for me and for many others. Install some audio drivers you might not have and try and use VLC player. |

I have a question for Chinwonder and Chief Mouse. I want to capture my vast collection of promo VHSs. I will do this in an uncompressed V210 10-bit YUV AVI file. Of course, I will maintain the frame size and rate of the original format, and keep everything interlaced with the proper field order. I really cannot leave this as uncompressed because of the file size (+100 GB/hr). On the other hand, I want to share this stuff with people to use it for their open restoration/remastering projects, so I wouldn't want to lose too much information. Which video codec do you recommend me to encode this stuff for those purposes? |

But MKV is just a container, not a codec. I don't have a list, but most of the VHS (and some Betas) are from the '90s. So there are a lot of Innuendo video clips in different versions, Made In Heaven promo clips, Rocks/The Eye stuff, EPKs, sales presentations, TV ads, DoRo trailers, etc. From memory, I think I have 3 VHSs including the full BBC2 broadcast of the Freddie Mercury Tribute, taken from a Japanese TV station. |

I intend to share these in mkv - including waveform audio in 48 kHz/24-bit. But I am still undecided on the video codec. Should I use a lossless codec, or I would encounter compatibility issues? H.264 at a high bitrate is enough? My expertise is mainly on audio - not video. |

In terms of lossy compression, how about HEVC? Even modest bitrates can look really good when properly set up. If you use high resolution and bitrates, it will be virtually indistinguishable. On PC, you may use a recent nVidia GPU (b-frame support is highly recommended, see link below) and run software like Handbrake, making sure to use the NVENC module so that HEVC encoding goes really, really fast compared to software/CPU mode. Yes, we use Lagarith and HuffYUV for archival purposes at our facilities. However, at 30/40 GB/hr for SD that would make not feasible for me the sharing of material for you guys to work on it. What do you think about H.264, 2-pass VBR @ 10 Mbps? Not lossless, I know, but that would be about 5 GB/hr for SD. |

Overkill for sharing, even! If Chief is to process any of these videos, that encoding preset should provide enough quality for satisfactory results. That said, neural network reconstruction techniques could improve on the missing detail from the original source, so perhaps there's no point in worrying too much about high quality lossy compression in practical terms. |
