Has RT ever played Rhythm Guitar live with BM on stage in the Queen + shows. I know he did when BM joined the Cross onstage back in the early 90s, but has he with QPR or QAL?
Don’t think he has. I’d never seen him play keyboard/piano until the promo video for The Unblinking Eye was released (does that also show him playing bass? I can’t recall).

It doesn't.
Cheers!
Out of boredom, a little list of which band members we have on film/tape playing different instruments:
Freddie: Vocals, piano, guitar (Crazy Little Thing..live, NOTW tour footage), percussion (tambourine live), drums (not seriously 'playing' but a quick bash on the kit in NOTW tour footage)
Roger: Drums, percussion (tambourine, congas, maracas, percussion kit with Queen & The Cross), vocals, guitar (the Cross, solo), piano (solo), stylophone (solo)
Brian: guitar, bass (Another World studio cam), piano, vocals, keys/synths (One vision studio footage)
John: Bass, guitar (Staying Power at MK), piano (YMBF promo vid), vocals (backing only), drums (one frame in One Vision promo), double bass (WWTLF promo vid)
I know there are other examples of each instrument, but anything instrument-wise missing for any of them?
Oh, I love this!
John:
- Bass (of course!)
- Guitar: 'Staying Power' and also the mimed 'Stutter Rap' cameo.
- Grand Piano: 'Best Friend' video... and 'Tutti Frutti'at Wembley for a split-second.
- Digital Piano: Tribute rehearsals (I think he's also playing 'Best Friend' there).
- Synths: 'Ga Ga' at San Remo and the Montreux festival (mimed, of course).
- Banjo: 'Magic' video.
- Drums: 'One Vision' (the extended version has him for an additional second or two).
- Triangle: 'Killer Queen' in the early years.
- Double-Bass: 'Forever' (video, mimed).
Brian:
- Guitar (of course).
- Grand Piano: 'Teo' and 'Save Me' 1979 - 1982, also 'Flash' (1980 - 1981) and loads of videos. Also 'Butterfly' at Musicland in 1985.
- Digital Piano: 'Too Much Love' at the Tribute.
- Synthesiser: Videos, live songs (e.g. WWTLF), mimed performances (San Remo, Montreux), 'One Vision' recordings.
- Banjolele: 'Leroy Brown' live 1974 - 1977, and 'Good Company' more recently.
- Triangle: Pavarotti & Friends (IIRC).
- Bass: AW promo, as you said.
- Harp & Koto: 'A Night at the Opera' anniversary videos.
- Bonus item: On 'Another World' (live), he only sang and didn't play any instrument. He started off 'No-One But You' in Amsterdam 2002 holding (though not playing) a guitar, but he soon took it off and only sang for the remainder of it.
Frederick:
- Grand Piano (of course).
- Guitar: 'Crazy Little Thing' 1979 - 1986, and a few seconds on the 'Innuendo' EPK (also the 'Headlong' video).
- Drums: 1977 Rehearsals.
- Tambourine and maracas: Live gigs here and there.
- Synths: A bit of the extended version of 'One Vision' shows three sets of hands on the DX-7. No faces are shown, but I suspect those are Roger, Frederick and Mack.
Roger:
- Drums (of course).
- Electronic Drums: Live gigs here and there, and also a few seconds of the videos for 'One Vision' and 'Back Chat'.
- Additional Percussion: Timps, gong, tambourine, etc.
- Guitar: Mimed performances here and there, videos, Cross gigs.
- Piano: 'Unblinking Eye' (I read somewhere he didn't play it on the record, though).
- Stylophone: 'Unblinking Eye' (only his hand is shown though).
- Synths: Read the 'One Vision' comment above.
"Brian:
- Harp & Koto: 'A Night at the Opera' anniversary videos."
I didn't know that. Would you mind give some explanation? Was Brian taped playing harp during ANATO sessions or it was sometime else?
Also Seb, you forgot Freddie's whistle blowing in Houston :p
No, he shot new (2005) footage of his hands on the harp and the koto. I don't know how much of that (if any) was actually shown, but I seem to remember him mentioning that back then via Soapbox.
The 2017 book does have a stereo photo of him playing the harp at Sarm Studios in London back in 1975.
Thanks for the explanation Seb!
I will get this book for my birthday soon, but I've seen already the photo you mentioned and it was very excited seeing that photo.
