Always wonderd why Freddie said "dont one year of love""in the beginning and in the middle "no ever tell me that love would hurt so much". does anybody know anything about that? |
matt z 25.02.2018 23:58 |
Never heard that. "DON'T one year of love?" Never heard it that way. Prob misheard? |
mike hunt 26.02.2018 02:24 |
It's, Just One year Of Love, Is better than a life time alone......Not sure if you're Joking or not. |
stevelondon20 26.02.2018 07:08 |
He's got to be kidding surely. Fred clearly says Just. |
matt z 26.02.2018 07:56 |
I'd think so too Steve london....only there's nothing comical about "Don't one year of love"....which would suggest a typo to me. . |
andres_clip 26.02.2018 08:16 |
No guy for real listen clearly. I know the lyrics says "just" but he doesnt say that. |
IanR 26.02.2018 10:24 |
A more interesting question is this: who plays the guitar solo on the Townhouse demo? And was it the right decision to cut it out in the final mix? |
Stick 26.02.2018 14:10 |
Too much earwax is a bitch. |
Invisible Woman 26.02.2018 16:35 |
I just listened carefully. I think he say "just" a little unclear but it's not " don't " . |
mike hunt 26.02.2018 18:18 |
Unlike most on this site, I like the Sax solo instead of guitar for this song. Nothing great, but another nice little tune from John. |
dysan 26.02.2018 19:30 |
Same. It fits the song. Never a fav, but 'of it's type' just fine. I remember hearing it on the radio blaring out in a square in france summer '89 and it was just perfect. |
cobohall 26.02.2018 21:49 |
Why would anyone would even speak of this song? One of the worst. When Freddie stopped singing and started screeching. |
Star* 26.02.2018 22:16 |
Freddie is singing "just one year of love" not "Dont one year of love" I feel you have cloth lugs lol |
runner_70 26.02.2018 22:50 |
Never heard the Version with guitar dolo. Freddies vocals are great |
matt z 27.02.2018 01:30 |
Agree with the dismissive one above. It's Freddie doing a sad cheesy Michael Bolton impersonation. Maybe if it was sung sweeter rather than all tense |
Saint Jiub 27.02.2018 01:51 |

It's an album that's short of inspiration. A few repeated formulas and one or two standout songs. I think when Queen began recording songs outside the Queen style the cracks were obvious. Joan Amatrading's sax solo is this songs saving grace. |
Sebastian 27.02.2018 13:49 |
It's Steve Gregory. Joan is on 'Don't Lose Your Head' doing incidental vocals, not sax. |
dysan 27.02.2018 14:54 |
Maybe he's saying that only a Joan Amatrading's sax solo could save the song? :D |
Star* 27.02.2018 15:16 |
VH : Queen were tired of playing safe with the same formula year in and year out so i applaud Freddie and John for taking that different direction with Hot Space. It is a great album and certainly in my top 5 Queen albums. Hot Space has a wide span of musical tastes on it and there is something to please everyone. Made in heaven is in my opinion the worst Queen album ever! It sounds rushed and overblown and that last track on the album was a sheer waste of valuable space, what crap. |

Sebastian wrote: It's Steve Gregory. Joan is on 'Don't Lose Your Head' doing incidental vocals, not sax.Yes of course ;) I don't know what made me type her name. . . its been a hard day! |
Kamenliter 27.02.2018 17:05 |
I love Freddie's vocals on One Year Of Love...once again, Queen never repeat themsevles and there are vocal inflections from him that are not apparent on any other recordings. One of the lines,'I'm a prisoner of love inside yo--oouuuu' at around the 3:25 point is unlike any other Freddie vocal inflection...reminds me a bit of Simply Red at that bit. Love the sax. |
Star* 27.02.2018 19:13 |
I always got excited when Queen tried something completely new and "One year of love" was something the band had never ever done before and that sax made the track extra cool, i bet the Americans loved it! |
runner_70 28.02.2018 06:41 |
I found the link with the solo link Sax solo is better |
Holly2003 28.02.2018 11:19 |
I hate the vocals on this track. Way too dramatic. I suspect Fred was trying to make up for the song's utter mediocrity. |
mike hunt 28.02.2018 13:31 |
Nah, It's a nice song. Again doing something a bit different than before. Would of been nice if Queen did a full album with ballads like that. More songs with The Sax. Then rocked out on the next album showcasing their ability to play different styles. |
Star* 28.02.2018 13:48 |
Mike, i do not think all the band would have agreed to one particular style of music for one album, and that is why they liked a wider span of music on the albums. Even on Hot Space the tracks were injected with some guitar licks from Brian even though they were some disco type songs on there, along with the rocky "Put out the fire" which was Brians fav track on the Hot Space album |
Dr Magus 01.03.2018 07:08 |
The song certainly fits the scenes it was used for in Highlander. |

Also using a sax as a feature instrument would reduce Brian's validity certainly as a lead instrumentalist. |
mike hunt 01.03.2018 13:30 |
I agree they would never do it, but I like that style of music. I think Brian could play a different style if they did a ballads album. Maybe more acoustic playing and the Sax mixed in. They never played only one on every album, so I agree never would have happened. Another interesting direction they could have taken if Freddie lived longer is have Cabelle sing on a few songs, a true rock opera. |

I think the Montserrat Caballe collaboration thing with Freddie was great on the Barcellona single but Fred did take it a bit too far making a whole album with Monty which was boring on most tracks, and i am a Freddie lover by heart. Freddie should have duetted with the likes of Elton or Cliff, that would have been in keeping with his rock/pop career. Freds best album remains Mr Bad Guy and although the songs on that album were a bit iffy, it was a good first solo attempt. Rogers first solo album Fun in Space remains his very best in my opinion. |
runner_70 01.03.2018 18:57 |
I disagree. Barcelona was amazing - an album completely over the top and featuring Freddies best vocals Strange Frontier is my fave Taylor album |
Star* 01.03.2018 19:22 |
My fav tracks on Barcellona where "Guide me Home" "How can i go on" but the album never made me feel happy it had a very depressing feel about it. |
Vocal harmony 01.03.2018 22:05 |
I think Mr Bad Guy suffered, not because of the song writing, but because Freddie tried to make a Queen album without Queen. Barcelona saw Freddie writing with someone other than himself in mind and with a lot of input from Mike Morran. It pushed harder than Mr Bad Guy and made for a much more interesting listening experience. |

runner_70 wrote: I disagree. Barcelona was amazing - an album completely over the top and featuring Freddies best vocalsI agree with your disagreement! Breathtaking album. And I always liked One Year Of Love. Although, like mentioned before, I'm not convinced that Freddie made the right decision to sing so much of the song in the highest register. He had this period (1984-86) of very high singing in full voice while recording Mr Bad Guy, AKOM and songs for Time musical and basically everything else from that time. |

The Title track of Barcelona was great, but the rest is even better. Guide Me Home/How Can I Go Home is one my favorite Freddie moments, that includes Queen by the way. The Opera track 4th song, not sure of the spelling is perhaps his finest vocal performance. The 2nd track is beautiful with It's Janenese influence. I think if Freddie was still alive he would cite Barcelona as one his favorites. Could have been a bit longer though. One more track would of been perfect. Mr. BAD Guy on the other hand was recorded between Queen albums and Tours, felt rushed. |

I must say, at one time I did like their solo stuff. In the 90's Back to the Light/Another World and I had Electric Fire and Happiness. Mr. Bad Guy, after all I was a die hard. Over time as they say only certain albums stand the test of time. I could. Honestly say Barcelona is the only album outside of Queen I still love. Brian Has some good stuff on his solo albums, but I never listen to them anymore. I struggle with his vocals at times. Cozy kicked ass though. |

A long time ago I've read a story that Montserrat asked Freddie to sing in operatic baritone on that song, not his usual tenor style. And Montsy wrote lyrics. Probably the song she had the biggest influence. And what an amazing results. And there is also that demo when Freddie sings soprano parts... So much to talk about this album. |
mike hunt 02.03.2018 19:06 |
Yes Ensueno, one of my favorites....It's one of those albums even after 26 years of listening I still get chills.. On the box set he sings her parts in the demos and was really impressive. Especially guide me Home. It's cool she wrote those lyrics, If you translate those lyrics they are beautiful. |
Chopin1995 05.03.2018 14:08 |
I've never thought about translating the lyrics of this piece. Beautiful indeed. |
